It’s hard to believe Randy Jones leads the defensemen, but then again, he doesn’t play almost 30 minutes every single game. Is he an effective player? Uhh… arguably.

I have a possibly strange affection for Randy Jones

The team is 14-8-1 with him in the line-up. He leads all Kings d in goals/60, asst1/60, asst2/60 and pts/60. His QUALCOMP numbers are better than Greene, Johnson, Drewiske and Harrold, which means he draws tougher assignments. But his QUALTEAM numbers are the lowest, which means he has to play with the lowest-rated teammates (i.e. he has the least help – Johnson’s QUALTEAM is the highest, so he has the luxury of playing with the best players).

His GA/60 is second worst (Johnson is the worst). But — I find this telling - the difference between his ON-ice +/60 and his OFF-ice +-/60 is +0.11. In other words: the team’s plus/minus when Jones is sitting on the bench is 0.11 better than when he’s on the ice. That’s better — a tenth of a goal per game better — but it’s not a glaring difference. The team is 6/10 of a goal better when Drewiske is sitting on the bench. 1/100 of a goal better when Harrold is on the bench. A whopping 2 1/3 goals better when Johnson is on the bench.

On the other side of the coin, we’re better with Doughty (by about +1.33), Scuderi, SOD (both about +0.5) and Greene (about +0.34) on the ice.

Wait till this year.

My feeling about Jones is...

… that he’s done pretty much he was acquired to do. He was a depth acquisition; he was never meant to be a top-4 defenseman. The Kings kind of had to throw him into the breach, and at least he had some impressive moments, like the shortie he scored against Carolina. Plus, the was a waiver acquisition, which means that DL gave up nothing for him.

I understand that there are people who aren’t at all impressed by him. But hey, Quisp runs the numbers so we don’t have to. And when you judge him relative to what the Kings envisioned when they picked him up, he’s done pretty well.

All good points

For me, the best part about Randy Jones is that he was picked up off waivers. It’s almost like the situation with Kyle Quincey. I can’t conclude that yet, but all roads lead to this ending.

Meat Train also leads the team in even-strength points. Greatest dude ever?

I second that.
