So what if Waddell is in New Jersey watching the Kings? That doesn't necessarily mean anything!
Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell at Devils-Kings game - NHL.com - News
Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell is in New Jersey tonight taking in the Devils game against Los Angeles from the Prudential Center's press box. The Kings are reportedly high on the list of teams trying to acquire Thrashers' captain Ilya Kovalchuk prior to the March 3 trade deadline. Waddell told NHL.com that he did not want to do an interview if it centered on Kovalchuk, but did say that he is still trying to sign the Russian sniper who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Waddell added that he is aware of the kind of speculation his presence at this game will cause, but he stressed that he's at this game tonight to scout the two teams, something he rarely gets a chance to do when he's watching his own team play.
Yes, of course, that makes perfect sense. Because it's important to scout your opponent when you have an up-coming game against the Devils IN APRIL and one against the Kings NEXT SEASON.
The Thrashers played in Philadelphia on Thursday and instead of going with the team to Nashville for Saturday's game, Waddell stayed behind to catch some other games in the area. "When you are watching your own team play, you never get to scout the other team," Waddell told NHL.com. It is interesting that it just happens to be the Kings in New Jersey tonight and L.A. GM Dean Lombardi is in the building as well.
That has to be just about the most transparent nonsense I have ever heard. "Scouting the other team." That. You. Almost. Never. Play.

We really need to stop talking about this, my balls are turning blue.

It sounds like...
Mr. Waddell needs to familiarize himself with the concept of plausible deniability. :-)
At least say that you just happened to be in the area, visiting a sick relative. :-D

Well
This game isn’t going to make Waddell want Simmonds any less.

If DL trades Simmonds
I want to see Kovalchuk and Bogosian or Kane in a Kings jersey. And that still won’t stop me from crying. (note to citizens of duh: I know this isn’t a possible trade scenario.)
Wait till this year.

You want to give Eklund some ideas? Ha ha.
I hope he doesn’t trade a fan favorite like Simmonds. He wouldn’t do that, would he? (she said with pathetic delusion)
Don’t do it, Dean. Think of the bobbleheads!

welcome from above
I continue to maintain that Simmonds, Schenn, Clifford, Bernier, Hickey, Moller, Voynov and Lokionov are all untouchable, barring an insane offer like the IK and ZB for Meat Train suggestion above. Possibly one of Teubert or Muzzin could be available, and maaaaaybe one of Hickey or Voynov, in both cases one player makes the other possibly expendable, but in both cases it depends on an evaluation of progress that we in our back-seat-driver positions can’t possibly make.
I will stick to the most likely scenario being (well, most likely is NO TRADE, but barring that) one of Stoll, Brown or Frolov, maybe two of them, and if not two of them then one or two of Teubert, Zatkoff, Jones, Kozun, maaaaaybe Hickey or Voynov, maybe our #1 pick.
And maybe that’s not enough. If that’s the case, fine.
Wait till this year.

After today's game.... Man....
I’d have to think DL is even less inclined to mess with this team by trading away roster players. They seem to have a chemistry thing going, and you’d hate to mess it up by tinkering with the formula.
OTOH, if they have another lackluster homestand, maybe you erase what I just said. But as of tonight, he can say to Waddell, “Look at the way my guys are playing as a unit. You expect me to break that up? C’mon!”

Hammond's take on this is interesting
Namely, that Waddell was there to be seen by the rest of the league, so that he could give the impression that a deal with the Kings was more imminent than it actually is. So he could put pressure on the other GMs in the hunt, but still play coy about it.
Interesting. Wheels within wheels.

The only flaw in that theory is that it attributes cunning, guile and intelligence to Dan Waddell.

My counter interpretation is that
Waddell feels impotent to some degree because he can’t let IK’s agent into the process or he will lose control of it and he can’t make a trade because no-one will give him what he is currently asking for. So he is stalking Dean Lombardi and trying to make it look like a date.
Wait till this year.
