Good Luck With That
Thanks to cap crunch, Devils opt for 11 forwards (update) - Puck Daddy - NHL - Yahoo! Sports
To get under the $59.4 million cap by a 3 p.m. deadline, the Devils placed defensemen Bryce Salvador (concussion) and Anssi Salmela (ACL) on long-term injured reserve. GM Lou Lamoriello has said the team is waiting for NHL approval of these moves; and while they're expected to be affirmed, "Devils" and "waiting for NHL approval" is giving us some nasty flashbacks to the summer. But because they're so tight against the cap, the Devils are going with just 11 forwards on their NHL roster to start the season.

11 forwards, 2 goaltenders, 7 defenseman… either they’re gonna be double-shifting a forward, or they have a Harrold-like “utility-man”.
I’ll be honest, I’m surprised they got it done. But that’s only for now. They can’t go all year with the minimum of 20 players. There’s gonna be some sort of move eventually. What happens if somebody gets injured in early-October?
Denis Gauthier sucks at hockey... and life.
Aren’t they still pretty screwed as soon as Salvador is healthy and has to come off of IR?
Also, is there a rule against keeping a guy on IR who is ok to return because of salary reasons?
Wow...
And if someone gets a minor ding that would otherwise cause him to sit a game or two, well….

Wonder how many rain makers who predicted the Devils would win their division saw this coming.
Now “you know who” can claim double minutes and actually earn his pay. Meanwhile LL can rotate in young, inexpensive talent from the farm until he hits upon a diamond in the rough.
Cost: .5-1 goal / game?
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
I agree with your reasoning...
but that seems like an awful high cost per game.
By the way, nice signature line.

Hey, the PS I added below was intended for your comment…

Thanks! I should give credit where it’s due – my sig line is an actual quote from the Adam Carolla Show. You can listen to it here and I think the exchange comes within the first 10 minutes or so of the show…

I generally don’t like to wish misfortune on others, but I hope that the Devils organization eats shit from this deal with that greedy prick and his asshole agent. What mystifies me is that LL knows better than to screw up a team like this…
Bite Your Tongue...
…it could have been us. Thanks Lou.
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
It couldn’t have been us. We weren’t going to go so far off the deep end to get Kovy. I mean, DL’s smart enough that at least our roster would be able to have 23 players instead of the ridiculous 20 that NJ is carrying right now.
In terms of losing players, now that might have been us. I’m feeling pretty certain that NJ is going to lose Parise much like we’d have had to lose Johnson, Bernier, or someone else come RFA time.

The most credible explanation that I’ve heard is that NJD’s owner is readying the team for sale, and Kovalchuk is an asset that can be used to lure a new buyer. So LL was ordered to make a financial decision, not a hockey decision, to pull out the stops to get IK.

Problem is that if your team is a loser, it is not a good financial decision. When you can’t have a full team of players (i.e. 23) because payroll is too tight, that should be embarassing. Lou should have quit and walked away.
This problem is going to persist in Newark for over a decade. Can you imagine what a cancer in the locker room this asshole will be? Serves him right. Eat shit and die.
Invader Zim!
I thought i was the only one who watched that show! I could tell you a story about that cartoon, but thats better left out of a Kings blog!
I cant see this holding out for more than a month for the Devils….when we hit Thanksgiving you will see some changes to their lineup!

Who cares about the Devils?
Defenseman Matt Taormina was assigned to Albany of the AHL and center Adam Henrique has been recalled. The moves leave the Devils with the minimum 20 players-12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders-and just $35,835 under the $59.4 million cap.
If you were an opposing coach...
Would you send your goon to cheap shot the Devils’ players knowing it’ll put them between a rock and a hard place?

No, I wouldn't.
Cheap shots are bad, doesn’t matter who it is against, so I wouldn’t try to do that.
In addition, if someone gets hurt they can simply put them on IR and then call someone up to replace them while they are hurt since the cap hit doesn’t count while on IR.
No, but frankly it's not cheap shots that cause most injuries
it’s poor conditioning, over-exertion, unlucky genetics (e.g. loose shoulders, etc.), being old (New Jersey was the second oldest team last year, don’t know where they are this year), long road trips…and good-old-fashioned wearing down your opponent.
Wait till this year.
Haha the response to this question has been pretty underwhelming. I was hoping for bloodlust, not reason!

If it's a good team against them, no...
But if it’s a really crappy team, (*cough, *cough, Columbus, *cough, *cough) then it’s all for yourselves!!!

Eventually something has to give. This is the equivalent to fixing a leaky roof with duct tape. Ya it works but it still needs to be fixed. The 2011-2012 season for the Devils is going to be a very very interesting one with all of the contract issues they have now and the possibility of losing Parise next year, and what to do in goal also, (Brodeur isn’t getting younger). Looks like another tight spot for LL to try and wiggle out of.
the other thing with the devils is that they're not technically under the cap. They are $3.4MM OVER the cap.
They are using up all of their $1MM+ bonus cushion and get a reprieve because Salvador is on IR. This allows them to go over the cap by up to his cap hit in order to replace him. Officially, their cap space is zero. And when Salvador is healthy the LTIR exception ceases and the Devils will have to clear $3.5MM (or whatever the actual number is) in cap hit immediately. I would imagine that Bettman/Daly are watching the Salvador LTIR situation very closely, because abusing the LTIR clause is a circumvention of Article 50 just like Kovalchuk’s original contract was. I have half a mind to start posting about this, but I don’t have the energy right now.
Anyway, the Devils at best put themselves in a position where they must stay healthy because any injury will require bringing up non-ready players from the AHL or else trading for replacement assets who would have to be dumped as soon as the injured player returns. This is true even if Salvador magically has to retire and his salary comes off the books.
Wait till this year.
My point about the bonus cushion is not clear. the point is:
they also have to clear that bonus cushion money by the end of the year, or else the overage is subtracted from their cap ceiling next year.
Lamoriello is just sitting on his hands and hoping that he gets some luck. Someone gets hurt. Another team suddenly has a need that he can satisfy with a trade he otherwise wouldn’t be able to make. Or maybe his prospects will all have break-out seasons and the Devils will never lose again.
What’s more likely is, the team goes out on the road, someone gets hurt but not bad enough to go on IR, the team gets banged up and continues to play hurt, which only makes things worse; they start having to dress less than a full roster of 20 (like Calgary two years ago), finally someone goes on IR, they bring up prospects; either they are winning through all this (they do have Kovalchuk and Brodeur after all, and that Parise guy, and Elias, etc.), or they are hobbled and play around .500 and everyone in the world nods sagely and clucks their tongues.
Wait till this year.
Exactly so
Once the normal friction of a season starts to have its effect, they will be in trouble. Slightly injured guys will have to be warehoused, or they will have to dress/play through injuries against everyone’s better judgement, or NJD will have to play shorthanded.
Gotta figure that Salvador will be kept in an undisclosed location until Lou has a deal in place for him. Bettman will have insurance fraud-type investigators out looking for him. :-)

Just like that episode of Married...With Children.
When Al tried to sue the shoe store because he had a nervous breakdown from selling shoes. So the shoe store hired a detective to make sure it was legit. Of course it wasn’t and the episode ended with Al getting caught because he had to wear shoes to bowl and he wanted to win the Puggy Weaver trophy soo badly.
