Game Recap: Kings vs. Sharks

Stay connected for news and updates

Holy fucking shit that was bad. The Kings of the past 6 home games disappeared tonight, and the Kings of 2008-2009 showed up.

Some thoughts:

  • What the hell happened to the defense. At least three of the Sharks goals came on give aways/turnovers in the defensive zone as a Kings player tried to clear the puck. Peter Harrold was responsible for two of them.
  • Jonathan Bernier needs to find his game. He needs to discover his game from last season when he got called up and blanked the Predators and Stars.
  • What was Terry Murray thinking? He should have played Jonathan Quick tonight, and Bernier against Buffalo later in the week. I agree that he needs the starts and the playing time, but not against San Jose.
  • Anze Kopitar was invisible tonight. He was on the ice, but nowhere to be found. His assist was added after the fact, but on the whole, he was a complete non factor.

The Kings sure can learn a lot from this game tonight. The Sharks showed the Kings how to win a game by dominating in the dirty areas of the Ice. A majority of their goals were scored from the slot, with the defensemen throwing the puck at the net, and the Sharks having 3 guys surrounding the netminder to whack at the rebounds. The Kings defense, as a whole, did a terrible job of protecting and clearing the front of the net. Furthermore, the Sharks dominated the boards tonight, Browns rush for the first goal not withstanding. They prevented the Kings from generating offense off the boards, forcing the Kings to generate their offense off the rush.

It is still early in the season, but I sure hope the Kings use tonight's loss as a gut check/wake up call. They need to get back to their defensive game. And for fucks sake Anze, wake up and start taking over a couple games.
