Turns Out Reading Blogs and Summarizing Them is a Job
Kings' Brayden Schenn probably won't play against Panthers - latimes.com
Schenn, 19, rejoined the club Monday after a two-week conditioning assignment with the Manchester (N.H.) Monarchs of the American Hockey League and Wednesday practiced on the penalty-killing unit. He has appeared in eight games with the Kings and would not be eligible to return to his junior team if he appears in a 10th — leaving him one game before the club has to decide his fate. But the Kings have lost seven of their last eight and that, Murray said, puts undue pressure on Schenn.
I would be willing to bet that most Kings fans who read this news in the Los Angeles Times have already read it on Rich Hammond's blog (www.lakingsinsider.com, but you knew that). Although I would have less of a problem with the LAT repackaging other people's work and calling it news if the LAT didn't feel the need to include the added value of false information.
It's not that he's ineligible to return to the WHL once he plays in his 10th NHL game. It's that, once he plays in his 10th game, his NHL entry level contract kicks in. He can still be returned to juniors -- he can be returned at any time. Also, not that it's all that meaningful, but once he plays his 11th game, his ELC counts against the 50 Contract Limit. Players who sign ELCs at 18 or 19 but continue to play in junior do not count against the limit until they have played their 11th game. By my (possibly flawed) count, the Kings currently have 47 contracts, two of which -- Schenn and Johan Fransson (on loan to the KHL) -- don't count.
When I was a kid, we had three channels and one of them (NBC) sometimes had a hockey game on once a week. I read the newspaper in the morning to find out what happened the night before and what it meant. About two inches of copy per game. Now, newspapers seem intent on being the 3rd or 5th or 10th link in a (by internet standards) very slow game of telephone. At least they didn't go for, "A Kings source says..."

i think boston was going to waive him anyways to make room for savard, so i dont expect it to be much from the kings
Hockeybuzz says Draft Picks but...
It hasn’t been officially said what the Kings gave up to get Sturm, and I don’t trust Hockeybuzz.
I like the trade – assuming the Kings didn’t give up too much – although they have to wait a few weeks before he can come into the lineup.
NHL Live!
says that it’s a conditional draft pick (no s).
conditional makes sense…my friend saw the same thing…where will sturm play? we have a boaload of centers…maybe Kop…Stoll…Sturm…Zues at center now?
I assumed they’d move him to the wing. Seems like a waste to have either him or Zues, both who scored 20+ goals last season – be a fourth line center.
Sturm plays center?
i thought he played wing
Also
I believe it also starts the clock ticking with regards to the CBA. So if he plays with the Kings beyond 1 more game he is considered to have played his first professional season. If not, then he won’t have his 1st pro season tallied until next year. This can come into play with how arbitration works, certain classes of free agency, rookie awards, initial contract length and salary cap, incentives/bonuses, etc.

ok...
well thats good….you just hear so much bullshit these days about trades…ill believe it when Bob Miller, rich, or Quisp says its so…
in the event this turns out to be true, i like the pickup…a big strong player who CAN play on the wing….a big guy next to Kopi….

At 6’0" 190lbs, I would hesitate to call Marco a “big strong player.”

think you’ve got the wrong dude. He was scoreless in the playoffs for the B’s last year. Not to say he won’t contribute, he was known for coming up with clutch goals in important games for us. Game 6 v MTL in 08 and the Winter Classic earning his spot in Bruins fans’ hearts. When he’s determined, he’ll will a goal into existence.
But yeah, he’s a smallish speedster, doesn’t hit really and isn’t the most effective in the corners due to size but he’s a backchecking pest and can snipe
ya know what…..i think i am…..im thinking of Lucic…..
But still i thought he was bigger….and he did do well for germany in the olympics…maybe even the only real offense they had was from him….anyways…thats my bad….still…i support my earlier rant with the hopes that he will at the very least be someone kopi can pass to or becomes enough of a threat to give kopi some more room on the ice….but it sounds like thats still a few weeks away….

The best part is that the Kings are giving up very little for him, so the risk is almost zero. They get an established player in exchange for something they have in abundance — and it’s a conditional pick, apparently, so how much they give up depends on how much Sturm actually contributes to the Kings.
I’m seeing this as Freddy Modin x2, with the upside for the Kings being higher because they’ll have Sturm for longer.

Rich is tentative on trades. If Bob McKenzie says it’s done you can go ahead and believe it.
i will add him to my list…..

Hello, pot? This is kettle. Although in your case, you ball-wash Rich Hammond for his “coverage,” when all he is is a glorified P.R. hack.
If you did some fact-checking, which you claim to do so well, the Times at 1:11 p.m. actually scooped Hammond, who posted at 2:30 p.m., in this case.
Look, I’m all about taking on the media. But don’t sit there and take shots when you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Be better than that. I know you are.

If you’re going to call Hammond “a glorified PR hack….” Well, based on what, other than a shallow and reflexive grasp of the fact that he’s now on the Kings payroll? I’ve been reading his blog since he was with the Daily News, and the only difference I see is that he can do this as a full-time job now, and he has more access to team sources than he used to. I don’t see any difference in tone or nature of the content, other than could be explained by the fact he’s around the team a lot more than he used to be. I mean, presumably, when he was with LADN, he was an “objective journalist” (and I use the scare quotes emphatically).
Look, I’m all about taking on the media.
I find that hard to believe when you don’t even acknowledge an important part of Quisp’s point, which is that Austin Knoblauch didn’t get a very basic fact straight, i.e., that sending Schenn back to Brandon doesn’t mean they can’t bring him back. That’s something someone who covers hockey for a major metropolitan daily (and Knoblauch has filled in on the hockey beat before) should understand.
You might try dropping “PainInThe” from your new posting ID. Or better yet, you might try posting under your real ID, rather than create a mask just for the purpose of slamming Quisp, you gutless punk.

Hello, Kettle.
You are of course correct that the Times post is time-stamped an hour or so before the Hammond post. I didn’t see the time stamp on the Times post because I didn’t read the Times post. I read it as a newspaper article in today’s LA Times. When an article appears in the newspaper the day after everyone has already seen it on-line…you see?
In retrospect, it’s hard to tell if the reporter got his story first hand, or simply watched the video attached to the post on the Times site.
When Hammond quotes Terry Murray, I take it for granted that he talked to Terry Murray. When the Times paraphrases Terry Murray, I have no idea where they’re getting it. Unless of course I already saw the quote the day before. Then I have a pretty good idea.
My reason for posting, however, was the correction regarding the facts of the story. I really couldn’t care less who scooped whom.
Wait till this year.
Funny, I see also that the Times has corrected the on-line version of the story, per my correction (which is strange since I "have no idea what I'm talking about").
A day or two later, I can see that the guy is just doing his job. It’s not his fault people read the paper the next day and by then it’s old news. My point about papers regurgitating stuff from blogs (though true) would obviously be on shaky ground if this post were the only evidence of it.
Wait till this year.
Now idk what to think....
Hammond says no dice on sturm deal…..

Helen also wrote this, that Schenn can’t be recalled again this season. Isn’t this also wrong? I thought he could be recalled once their season is over, or like he was last season (emergency recall)
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
On Schenn not being able to be recalled: technically, Helene is correct that he can’t be called back up except under emergency circumstances (what those are, I don’t know). It’s part of the conundrum of what to do with junior-eligible players if they can’t stay in the NHL but aren’t allowed to play in the AHL.
As for last season, I don’t remember the exact circumstances, but Schenn happened to be in (I think it was) Vancouver, so the Kings had him play under a one-game amateur tryout contract. I don’t know about recalling him to the big club once his season is over.
So we replace the injured dude (Poni or Parse, take your pick)
With another injured dude… Awesome
All sarcasm aside, I like Marco Sturm, I wanted Michael Ryder but whatever… When healthy, stick him with Kopitar…

no game thread?
In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
no game preview either
i didnt realize there was a game until i visited LAKInsider
What?
You mean you haven’t had this epic match-up marked on your calendar for months? I was like a kid at Christmas when the 2010-2011 schedule was released….my whole family was sick of me shouting, “We get the Panthers at home! We get the Panthers at home!”

heh
hockey’s hockey to me.
that, and i have Weiss, Santorelli, and Allen in one league; Williams, Kopitar, and Quick in another.
i don't want to usurp Quisp's role here
but since there’s no game preview up yet, and since i’m the resident Red Wings fan here (but live in Los Angeles), you guys want me to do a game preview FanPost?
