Kovalchuk Takes the Plus Out of Plus/Minus
The Puck Stops Here : Kovalchuk`s Worst +/- Rating
The worst +/- rating in the NHL belongs to Ilya Kovalchuk of the New Jersey Devils. He has a -26 rating. [...] This +/- rating is largely an indictment of the New Jersey Devils team. New Jersey has the worst team +/- rating at -53. The worst three and five of the worst six +/- ratings in the league are Devil players. Playing significant minutes on the Devils is going to get any player a bad +/- rating. Kovalchuk is third in ice time on the team. The two players who are ahead of him in ice time (Andy Greene and Henrik Tallinder) are the second and third worst +/- ratings. Kovalchuk has never been a strong +/- player. The only time he finished a season as a plus player in his career was last season. [...] Kovalchuk has only ten even strength points so far this season. That puts him second on his Devils, who have the worst offense in the league this year. [...] Ilya Kovalchuk has not been able to score as much as expected this year. It is a combination of bad luck and poor teammates.
Yes, it certainly is bad luck that Kovalchuk's own contract made it impossible for the Devils to field a complete roster of NHL-caliber players. Who could have foreseen this?

dah. ees goot.
I am now bringing message to kings fan. Any high number is good, that is math. I skate like wind, but wind is broken from Rolston. Now he waiving from us at minors, and must use re-entry pod like sputnik. Dah. Tip for you, Iearn from in America: direct deposit save account fee, all players like this, what it means unaccountable.
End Corporate Personhood.
Better than goot.
We all knew during the massive summer drama that the Devils would need to make adjustments to make room, but man, this has been a complete disaster. It’s fascinating after all Kovi’s talk of signing on a certain date is great luck and that emotional presser, that just about everything since that moment has gone to total crap. I don’t think I’m overstating it in saying this has to be one of the biggest all-time meltdowns.
Kovy is worth his contract (or at least he should be), it’s all the other bad deals that have them fucked. It’s not his fault he was the last one signed.
Yeah, I still love him, what of it?
I agree with this. Except now I think the whole deal has made him mentally ill.
Why people were pointing fingers at the coach is beyond me. Hellooo-ooo, Devils management! The piper called, he wanted you to pay up five months ago.

Yeah, I gotta admit, the Rolston deal is the one that really has me wondering what got dumped into the water cooler in the Devils’ front office. Doing contractual cartwheels to land Kovalchuk in his prime at least has a certain logic to it, but paying Rolston that much at this stage of his career…. Yeesh.
Even so, I still think it’s a mistake to pin so much hope on any one player to make your team’s fortunes. And I think the expectations for Kovalchuk kind of got out of hand in some quarters last spring and this summer, both here and on the opposite coast.

Worth every penny. Wait, plus/minus is like golf right? The lower the better, right?

The only thing I have to say about this is...
HAAAAA!!! HA, HA, HA, HAAAAAAAAA!!!
"Soo many games, soo little time"
i’ll admit it… i wanted him on the kings bad. i’m glad it didn’t happen. i’m even more relieved that DL didn’t try to offer a contract to him like that of the NJ devils…
DL has done some things that i disagree with for sure, but i cannot deny him on this one. he made his offer and stuck to his guns. to be honest, i don’t know how he did it.
my new hobby is to daydream about how Kovy would or would not have fit within this team/org. more times than not, i don’t think this system would work for him.
i still think he is a great player. however, being the sore loser that i am, i couldn’t have asked for a better result after losing out on Kovi-stakes.

Didn’t want him, Thanking Jehovah the Kings had the sense to walk. Sure +/- is affected by a good or bad team and this edition of the devils is TERRIBLE. Surprising given a 15 year run of success. Kovalchump was, is and will be for another decade and a half a boat anchor and a cancer.
I pray every day...
…That the Atlanta Thrashers make the playoffs with the Kings this season, and totally humiliate IKee and his fan(s).
Gotta admit it, some really important Entity out there has a really sardonic sense of humor. IKee The Lone Ranger and his stationary Pontoon teammates have given me some real pleasure this season.
Yes, at that point we'll know some Divine Being has an eye for comedy gold :-D
The thing that threw me a little about those who were so convinced that IK wanted to play for a winner was that Atlanta was a playoff team when they were forced to dump him. They fell out of the playoffs only in the ensuing chaos. And then IK re-ups with an aging team that had lost in the first round of the playoffs 3 seasons in a row. Not a huge qualitative difference there.
Of course, it still irks me that I got savaged at Hammond’s place last spring when I casually suggested that it would take $10 mil/year to sign IK. If not for the salary cap-dodging sleight-of-hand, I’d say I got that right. Certainly, I was right in that he was determined to sign for no less money than he’d turned down from Atlanta.

On the serious side...
Part of this fiasco sits squarely with the Truly Aged One, Brodeur the Unfit Goalie.
I didn’t anticipate his gaining a full goal-per-game on his GAA this season.
Of course, neither did anyone else in the NJ boardroom.
… I’m beginning to think you’re paid by Dean Lombardi to bitch about Kovalchuk every week, or you’re just obsessed with the guy to an unhealthy degree. Which is it?
You must be paid by Lou to bitch about Quisp, then. Ohh, now it all makes sense!
Seriously, why comment here at all? He posted what he did because he was freaking right about the whole thing, and was accused by people like you of just bitching because he was biased or bitter or jealous or what have you. They substituted ad hominem for actually addressing his arguments. But he was right.
It might be nice if, for once, you tried to engage in a normal conversation. If you can’t, go back to HF Boards and stay there.
