How Many Rounds?: Oilers 3, Kings 2 (SO)

The only exciting part of the game against the Edmonton Oilers last night began with Dustin Brown's first goal and ended with the final horn ending overtime. The first 50-odd minutes of the game were... mundane to say the least, but perhaps the shootout was more mundane. No, I take that back. I appreciated Erik Ersberg and Jeff Deslauriers' attempts at poke checking during the shootout, but man, it was getting a bit tedious with the crappy attempts. I guess if it had to be anyone to end the game, I'm not completely pissed with it being Lubo Cookie who did it. The Los Angeles Kings picked up a point, so that's a positive, but there's definitely room for improvement.

Question: Was it me or did the first unit of the PP get carte blanche with how long they could stay out on the ice?

Also, I'm curious as to why the entire arena was screaming foul when Drew Doughty was assessed an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty. He shot the puck past Deslauriers after the net was knocked off the moorings. That's a penalty. End of story. I personally objected to Deslauriers trying to rip Doughty's head off, but that's just me.

Apologies for the short post; I'm still trying to get over this cold.

I think the fuss over Doughty's penalty was this:

It was more obvious at the time that Deslauriers had taken a whack at Doughty than anything else. That’s what people reacted to.

Also, I think people reacted to the fact that Doughty went to the box well before someone went to serve for Deslauriers, and well before any announcement was made. So it looked for a long moment like there would be no call on Deslauriers. That’s why I was yelling, anyway.

Also, Doughty wouldn’t have gotten a penalty if Deslauriers hadn’t attacked him.

How do you figure?

He shot the puck after the net was dislodged and the play was dead.

I think it was close enough that the ref would have let it go.

Exactly. The scoreboard had 2 minutes up for Doughty and there was nothing up for Deslauriers stuff. Given that the door wasnt even open, it looked like the Kings were going to get the only penalty.

I dunno…I hated it when that timeout was called by the Oilers, because I knew it meant they were going right back out again. Ugh.

I hope you feel better soon! It seems like the whole west coast is sick.

Also, that timeout was extra long because a broken pane of glass had to be switched out.

Thanks; I’ve been stuffed up for a week! It’s unnatural.

My understanding with the power play was that the Kings were trying to tire out the aggressive Edmonton penalty kill and then hit ’em once they slowed down.

That makes perfect sense to me

What I saw in that last PP in the 3rd was the Kings waiting for the Oilers PK to come at them. But the Oilers stayed in a very passive box, the opposite of what they had been doing. Which left the Kings going, “Wait…. You’re not coming after us?” And everyone yelling, “Shoot, shoot!” when there were no shooting lanes.

I didn’t have a problem with them holding onto the puck, it just seemed like it wasn’t that difficult to predict where the puck was going on all the passes.

Rudy’s point makes sense but I guess I was just frustrated as hell with them by that point.

Frustration’s understandable. Especially when you waited until the second half of the 3rd period for the team to pick up its game.
