Jamie Storr was better than you think
As you probably know, Jamie Storr has been helping the Kings out in practice this week, in place of Jonathan Quick who is somewhere I forget. RudyKelly at Battle of California had some fun at Jamie's expense. I laughed. And then I remembered that Storr:
- is 4th on the Kings in career wins, behind Vachon, Hrudey and Lessard.
- is 2nd in career GAA (2.52) among goalies with more than 100 games, behind Felix Potvin. Quick is 3rd.
- is 1st in career SV% (.910).
- is 2nd in career shut-outs with 16. Vachon had 32.
- is 1st in single season GAA (more than 15 games played): 1.90 in 2001-2002.
- is 1st in single season SV%: .929 in 1997-1998. (holds three of the top four).
- was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team twice (qualified as a rookie two years in a row)
- won back to back gold medals for Team Canada at the WJCs, during which he was undefeated.

meanwhile, 26 goalies later...
Or whatever it is. I lost count.
Thanks for reminding us. I was always pulling for him to stick, and then all of a sudden he disappeared. Wasn’t that about when we acquired Garon for Huet?
I sometimes wonder how many careers, regardless of the talent, end up going astray thanks to a slulmp, a crappy or unlucky (e.g. perennially injury-plagued) team, or the unfortunate whims of coaches, general managers, etc.
It would be cool to see that — was it ESPN? — commercial during the playoffs, with Storr doing his pre-game routine in slow motion. Is that floating around anywhere?

I tried searching for that commercial...
…and the first result I got was your comment from this post. Sadly, I don’t think it exists on the Intertubes.
Also, your comment about goalie careers being derailed by confidence is a great one. You could argue the same thing for pitchers in baseball as well. It’s such a tough mental position to play that it’s no wonder that goalies (and pitchers) are, for the most part, strange people.

i was curious myself and apparently Jamie plays in Dusseldorf, Germany.
I remember liking Fiset more than Storr. Not sure why… they both seem so unspectacular now

Oooohhh! Our first point-counterpoint postings between BoC and JFTC!!! Storr-gate’10 might be just the controversy which could rip the fabric of the Kings’ blogosphere to shreds! Somebody grab me a shank, this could get ugly!

Looks like Rudy’s a no-show. Tut tut…

Storr sucked, wanna fight about it? All those stats prove is that Storr is the world’s tallest midget.

I had forgotten that Storr was drafted so high
I wonder if the way we (as Kings fans) remember Storr is deeply colored by that fact, just as our perception of Frolov is colored by the fact that he was taken in Round 1, also.
1994 was a weird draft, though.
Ryan Smyth (#6) went one before Storr (#7). Even in retrospect, there weren’t a lot of better alternatives among the first rounders. Friesen, Ohlund and Moreau all went after Storr in the first round. So the Kings could have gone that route. But then again, 11 out of the first 26 picks (1st rnd), and 26 out of the first 52 (through the 2nd rnd), didn’t pan out.
On the other hand, Alfredsson, Elias, Hedjuk, Sullivan, Holmstrom, Zednik and Souray all went 3rd round or later. And, of the goalies, Cloutier (26), Theodore (44), Turco (124), Tim Thomas (217), Hedberg (218), Nabokov (219), Vokoun (226) and Grahame (229) all went later, some MUCH later. So go figure.
Wait till this year.
Storr was doomed from day one
He was actually a very good goalie, and would have been well served having Dean Lombardi as a general manager. I always felt the team rushed him…
cha-ching!
but, alas, water under the bridge…

No concern that his stats aren’t affected by the Dead Puck Era? Of course, that era kind of swept by the Kings with little effect in general, but still…
