Trade Deadline: What Should the Kings Do, and Who To, and What With

We have a nice two week break another day or so to contemplate the 63 hour trade window which opens at 9PM PST February 28 and closes at 12 NOON PST March 3. The Kings are likely to make the playoffs and find themselves in one of the middle seeds (4-5). Only a total collapse (worse than 3 games below .500 from here on) will result in missing the post-season. So we have to assume Lombardi will be in a mood to do some shopping armed with a very specific shopping list. Me, with all this time on my hands (grrrr, luge!), I want to figure out two things, what I would do if I were Lombardi, and what Lombardi would do if he were Lombardi. Which of course, he is.

First, a list of what we (think we) know:

Star-divide

  • Lombardi has mentioned in the recent past that he's looking at three things. He never said what the three things are.
  • I previously guessed what they were. A sniper, a veteran sandpapery bottom-six forward, a second line center and a back-up goalie. I know that's four things. At the time, I was talking about what Lombardi was looking for (or starting to look for) last summer. Now, I would cross second-line center off the list, and pretend that I put depth defenseman on the list in the first place.
  • Note to self: Brayden Schenn will be available when his WHL season is over. Since the Wheat Kings are hosting the Memorial Cup, Schenn won't be done until May 24. Does Lombardi plan on bringing him up if the Kings are still alive in late May? I would say yes, but would also note that May 24 would be the end of the conference finals, so we should be so lucky.
  • Lombardi has said, in the wake of the Kovalchuk non-trade, that the kids have been playing "for each other" and playing too well to do them a disservice by, say, trading some of them away.
  • He also said he would not trade Frolov for picks and in so doing make the team worse.
  • He did not say he would not trade Frolov at the deadline and make the team better. (my hunch is Frolov stays, and signs for 3 years/$10MM, but what do I know?)
  • Williams is likely not coming back this season. appears to be threatening to come back around the end of the regular season.
  • Smyth, Kopitar, Brown, Stoll, Simmonds, Handzus, Richardson, Frolov are eight skaters who would be in the top-nine come playoff time. We're one short. and Williams are nine skaters who would make up the top nine come playoff time.
  • Moller, Parse, Clune, Purcell and Harrold are a decent utility knife 4th unit. Purcell has had his problems offensively this year, but on d he's solid. Lowest GA/60 of anyone on the team.
  • Cliche has been recalled. Parse has been sent down. I don't think this will affect much, plan/trade-wise.
  • Ivanans in the playoffs? No.
  • Doughty, Scuderi, Greene, Johnson, O'Donnell -- that's five who are playoff ready. (I know some/many will want to debate JJ -- he makes mistakes, it's true; but this feels to me like a pretty great time to see what he's got when the chips are down.) Drewiske, Jones, Harrold...I think Drewiske (still getting his legs back after being hurt) will be good to go by the post-season. The other two...I'm not scared of putting Jones or Harrold in; but it does look like we need another body, a playoff tested veteran defenseman.
  • Quick and Ersberg. My guess is DL will stick with EE as the back-up, in lieu of picking up a wily vet. That's okay with me. I would have been happy to see Bernier a couple of months ago, but I get it. The plan works for me as long as there are no inj****s. [UPDATE: did I read on a message board that Bill Ranford said in a radio interview that Quick "tweaked his back" in a Team USA practice? I assume this is minor if true, or we'd be hearing more about it.]
  • Who is available to move? Purcell? Possibly, but DL likes him (I like him; I don't want him to Moulson on me). Moller? No. Richardson? No. Harrold? Maaaaaybe. Schenn, Clifford, Loktionov, Voynov, Bernier? No, no, no, no, no. Hickey? I would be shocked. Teubert? Less shocked, but in both those cases, it would have to be for a really good player and not a rental.
  • I'm going to guess that, unless it's one of the bigger names, and unless that name has a few years on his deal or is willing to sign, what Lombardi gives up will be mostly picks. And no roster players.

The Kings may well go into the post-season with the current line-up; this could easily happen if the right deal doesn't present itself. I am 100% sure that the needs are not so dire that Lombardi would overpay to fill them. But, if a deal or two does happen, I think we'll see two things:

  1. A forward who can play on the third line (and second line when the need arises), with playoff experience or at least a veteran presence.
  2. A veteran defenseman for depth.

Which rentals out there fit that description?

My picks would be Steve Ott and Joe Corvo. Eric Belanger. Is Sydor too old now? Probably, but would be some nice symmetry, a good story. I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of candidates, just as I'm sure whatever happens will not be what I expected.

1) I’m confident that you’re correct about what will happen with Frolov this season, and I very much hope you’re right about what will happen with him after this season. I really, really hope he agrees to a multi-year deal at a reasonable price to stay here. My fear is that some other team will be willing to overpay for him, and his agent will jump at it.

2) Not so sure about bringing Corvo back. Never showed as much firepower as he did with the Kings, which means that one season may have been a fluke. But I’d like to see Belanger in a Kings uniform again. Always liked his game, and you can never have too many good face-off guys at playoff time.

Agreed on Belanger. Faceoffs are at a premium in the playoffs.

by JZarris on Feb 27, 2010 8:43 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed on Fro, I think the best thing for the Kings that could have happened with Fro is for him to have the season he is having. He has been a very serviceable player this year, been excellent as usual on the cycle, fairly good defensively, and has chipped in here and there. If he would have scored 35 or so I’m convinced he would have been gone, but at his current rate no one in their right mind (doesn’t mean there’s not a looney GM who is not in their right mind) who would give him more than 3-3.5 mil a season.

by Nut on Feb 27, 2010 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

My guess is Fro is gone, most likely after the season. I think the writing has been on the wall for a while despite the recent Fro love. Of course his agent will jump at a high offer. He’ll jump at every offer. That’s his job! But it’s Fro’s decision which offer he accepts. I don’t think it’s a stretch for another GM to bid higher for him though. You don’t have to be looney to see Fro’s potential. A change of scenery has done wonders for many x-kings. Fro just might be yet one more of those. I think a team with other Russian players may do the trick.

Eric Belanger would be a nice add. He was a solid part of the 2001 playoff run with that huge game winner. His game has stayed steady and consistent, although not even close to spectacular. But his experience would help. And let’s just add Lubo while we’re at it (I know, not possible).

Another route… is even possible to bring in one of the slovak ex-kings? (not that it would be desirable) Are their rights still owned by an NHL team?

Hard to imagine Dallas, Ottawa or Minnesota being sellers at the deadline.

by m_and_m on Feb 27, 2010 8:04 PM PST reply actions

You might be right. Hard to know what they're thinking.

But consider that the Flames, Ducks, Stars, Wild and Blues are long-shots to make the playoffs. No matter what any one of those teams does, one of LA, Nashville, Colorado, Vancouver, Detroit or Phoenix would have to crap out, and I don’t think that’s going to happen. Not to say it won’t. I just don’t think it will.

Dallas in particular might decide (I would) to start dealing now, to get some picks and prospects for their old timers. The chances of them making the playoffs are not good, and getting out the first round? Next to zero.

I’m trying to think who I mentioned from Ottawa.

Wait till this year.

Good stuff. I agree we need a winger (since we don’t know how effective Williams will be when he comes back) and a defenseman that can skate and play with Jack Johnson. I’m looking at Atlanta and think that a deal for Pavel Kubina and Colby Armstrong would be the Kings’ best bet. I don’t know how much we’d have to give up for them since I’m terrible at that sort of thing but I imagine it would be something like a first and a prospect. That would give us something like this:

Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Frolov-Handzus-Simmonds
Richardson-Stoll-Brown
Clune-Moller-Stempniak

Scuderi-Doughty
Johnson-Kubina
O’Donnell-Greene

Looks pretty good to me.

The West Coast is the Best Coast.

Whoops, yeah. I was thinking about Stempniak and Kaberle too, but I figured they would be too expensive.

especially kaberle, as he still has a year left on his contract, and it's Burke.

Smyth/Kopitar/Williams
Frolov/Handzus/Simmonds
Ott/Stoll/Brown
Clune/Richardson/Moller

Wait till this year.

I'm notoriously unreliable when it comes to what we can get for whom

(for example, I figured Calder and a pick for Williams)

but my guess, for Kubina and Armstrong, two rentals, it would have to be a package of picks (e.g. a 2nd and 4th) plus a second tier prospect.

Wait till this year.

Should probably trade Handzus while he’s “Olympics Hot.” Although you’d probably trade for veteran depth, so there’d be no point to it.

About a year and a half ago

I said Handzus would go to a contender at either the 2010 or 2011 deadline, but now I not only would be shocked if he were traded, but I think he might well re-sign next year. I don’t think one can over-estimate the key role(s) he plays on this team. Among forwards, he’s probably the most important piece of the defensive system; he’s crucial on face-offs. And now he’s Holmstrom, the big ass in front of the net that eclipses the sun. If the Kings continue their “ascension,” and if Handzus is willing to take a less stratospheric salary, I would love to have him around for a few more years. This is a guy who has coaching aspirations. He’s exactly the guy we’d be trying to trade for right now if we didn’t already have him.

Wait till this year.

Also, he looks like Death warmed over.

An asset you’d rather have on your side.

Handzus has been pretty close to MVP. No way he goes anywhere.

Zues has played spectacular hockey for the Kings this season. There is no way that Dean could easily trade him away.

especially since in order for a trade to happen

someone else would have to value Handzus more than we do, and I don’t think that’s possible. He’s our secret weapon.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Mar 1, 2010 10:34 AM PST up reply actions

He’s our secret weapon.

Code name: Ninja Ostrich!

I really hope he and Frolov would be willing to stay for less and we can keep both of them. Who knows. Fro seemed to be modest in his negotations before, but…dang, it’s going to feel like a long time until this is all over.

I also agree with all you say above, esp. your point that Deano is in a position of strength. He can just sit tight if he wishes. I wish fans of other teams (and the press) would remember that when they start imagining possible deals. Just because we have cap room doesn’t mean we want to use it all up now, or on the wrong pieces. Hello! DL has a Plan. Like the Cylons. But better. I think.

Good post.

Agreed. Hopefully the end of DL’s plan is better than the end of BSG (yeah it was producers not the Cylon’s plan, either way it sucked.)

At least we got to see Dean Stockwell off himself in the finale…

I sincerely hope that Dean L. =/= Dean S. in this case, heh. But I can’t help capitalizing it when I think, “He has a Plan.” Just a reflex, at this point.
