PRAISE BE DINGLEBARN*! Kovalchuk to New Jersey and I couldn't be happier
Let's assume the reports are correct, and the trade is Kovalchuk, presumably as a rental, for Johnny Oduya, Nicklas Bergfors, Mattias Tedenby Patrice Cormier and a 1st. That's like Matt Greene and Teddy Purcell,Oscar Moller a forward version of Colten Teubert and a 1st, keeping in mind that each one of the NJD players is less desirable than the Kings versions I just mentioned. Oduya is a solid guy, not as big as Greene, not as dependable, but with more offensive upside. The other two guys are short prospects, one of them fast and Swedish. one of them short and the other mean and evil. I used to like Cormier, before I saw the window into his soul. But I understand why that's a decent move for both teams. Still, Waddell said he wasn't looking for a deal where the biggest names were prospects, and that's what he's got here.
Given what Waddell claimed he wanted -- two roster players (NOT kids but players who could step in now and help with a playoff run), one blue-chip prospect and a high pick, I would say he's got to be disappointed.
What this tells me is, Waddell never got an offer anywhere near what he was looking for. People were talking about Stoll and Johnson, with Lombardi supposedly balking (as he should) at including Johnson. I must also conclude that Simmonds was never part of anyone's conversation, because Kovalchuk for Simmonds straight up is a better deal than what Waddell took. I also think it's very, very likely that Lombardi wanted no part of a rental conversation and wasn't even willing to part with Stoll (for example) for a rental. Because, again, any deal that includes Stoll is a better deal for Waddell than the Oduya and two prospects deal. Stoll, Purcell and a pick is better. And based on what actually happened instead, I can only assume Lombardi wasn't even willing to cough up Stoll. And no one else around the league was willing to part with their Stolls, either.
I love this trade. It totally sucks.
*Dinglebarn is what came out of the mouth of one of the announcers on our recent roadtrip, upon trying to say the name Dean Lombardi. I can kinda see it. Dean Lombardi. Ding Glombardi. Dinglebardi. Dinglebarn.

Dude, kicking Atlanta fans while they’re down.
Maybe I’m just being cynical but does anyone else think Waddell really wanted a black player coming back?
The best part about this is that it’s not likely that New Jersey will sign Ilya so we still have a crack at him. If we want. I mean, whatever.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.

I don't know Don Waddell enough to comment on that
But I think there are plenty of other reasons for wanting Simmonds on your team.

I believe Rudy is referring to Oduya. The guy is Swedish-Kenyan.

Yes, and I'm sure this will appeal greatly to the Swedish-Kenyan contingent of the Georgian hockey-worshipping fanbase.
Wait till this year.

Roger that
I didn’t know Oduya had African ancestry.

everyone knows that Simmonds and Kane in Atlanta would have been one of the best P.R. saves Waddell could have made
luckily lombardi is not a fool
Wait till this year.

The question is is New Jersey renting IK and do they have a shot at signing him, or is IK up for grabs on July 1 and the Kings are in the mix? Quisp?

NJD has as good a shot as anyone at signing him.
They have the cap space. They’re a good team, in general. But I have no idea if Kovalchuk wants toplay out the rest of his career in New Jersey (but I can guess), especially since I attribute most of their success to Brodeur and he’s only got a couple years left. Kovalchuk claims to want a 10-12 year deal.
I have to believe he’s going to wait until 7/1 and see what transpires. In that context, the Kings are very much in the mix. However, I have to believe Marleau is a better fit for the Kings than Kovalchuk.
Wait till this year.

Wise words as ever, but I just wonder who will be the LA equivalent of Joe Thornton, who DL got to change San Jose from a playoff team to a contender. It wasn’t Hossa, it wasn’t Gaborik. Is it Kovalchuk, is it Marleau? is it … ?

Is it our own players who get better each year? Our prospects of which we have many? If the right player is available for the right price, then we add. If its not (Kovalchuk is the right player, wrong price), no need to panic and blow it up. Next season we’ll have Bernier pushing Quick, probably one of Voinov, Hickey, or Tuebert (my money’s on Voinov) and maybe Loktionov or Schenn up. Chill daddio!

yes
for the sake of argument (and at least a couple of these pieces won’t happen because there will likely be personnel changes between now and camp — UFA signings etc.), just assuming we stand totally pat and let players develop and heal…
Richardson/Kopitar/Williams
Smyth/Stoll/Brown
Frolov/Handzus/Simmonds
Clifford/Schenn/Moller
Scuderi/Doughty
Johnson/Greene
Muzzbert/Hickov
Drewiske/Harrold
Quick
Bernier
Wait till this year.

Yes but do you see that lineup making the Stanley Cup finals? Maybe but I think it is a bit of a stretch. There needs to be that big gun thats pushing the 40-50 goal level, and maybe Kopitar gets there, but I’d say that’s less than even money.
I think now is the time for you, Quispy, as our Capology Rainman, to revisit that cap issues of the big UFA haves and have nots, to see where we are in respect to the others in getting the likes of IK, Marleau et al.

Well, y'know....
Kopitar’s just about a 40/year guy right now (I think he’s almost exactly at 1 goal/every other game at the moment), and he’s still young. Given that he’s still working on his conditioning, I don’t think we’ve seen his ceiling yet.
I understand where you’re coming from, though. I think the odds are against the Kings making it to the Finals this year, but given an absence of real misfortune, I think their odds next season are much better just based on a natural rate of improvement for the young guys. We haven’t seen Johnson’s ceiling, or Simmonds’, or Moller’s or even Doughty’s. But at the same time, I agree that Lombardi would be remiss if he didn’t at least look into bringing a top-tier UFA this summer.
btw, I think we should start using Dinglebarn as Lombardi’s standard nickname instead of DL. :-D

excellent points!!
First off I would like to point out that the odds are against EVERY team to make the finals… The NHL, more than any other sport, has upsets in their playoffs. Look at the HUGE regular seasons the Sharks have had only to be blown out in the first round. ‘93 when the Kings went to the finals we weren’t even one of the top 4 seeds. Even a team with a huge regular season point total has a less than 50-50 chance of making the finals.
All that aside, I totally agree with you about the upside of all of our major players (with the exception of Smyth). Look at where we are in the standings, and add to it happy thoughts of Kopi, JJ, Drew, Simmonds, Moller not yet at their peaks. Hell, I’m not sure we’ve even seen Brown’s upside yet.

Quantas never crashed
well, as it sounds like you know, i did that last year ad nauseum. I’ve been thinking about it again these last few weeks, and am waiting until the trade deadline passes. last year the main point of obsession around the league was Hossa, and i am quite happy to note that I called that one a mile away (I said that the wings simply could not sign hossa and even with letting him walk would have to lose a couple of roster players — ended up being Samuelsson and Hudler — and that the Kings had a much better shot than people thought, as there were in fact very few teams who could sign him, Chicago being the one team I said could but shouldn’t unless they’re insane. They have of course proven themselves to be insane.). This year we’ve got Kovalchuk, Marleau, Frolov and it’s pretty downhill from there in terms of big young expensive forwards. There are plenty of old ones.
the bottom line is that the Kings are in an excellent cap position relative to other teams and have in the year since we all thought about these things the Kings have graduated into one of the genuinely attractive destinations for UFAs. without actually looking at the numbers of everyone around the league, who they have to re-sign etc., my guess is the Kings have just about the best combination of “attractive destination” and cap room. Chicago, for sure, Detroit, Philly, Washington (the usual suspects) all are pretty pressed for cap space. San jose will be right up there, though, especially after their Post-Choke 10.0 Purge 2.0.
Wait till this year.

I am proud, proud I say, to wear this sig today. I understand Leafs fans now, as my worship borders on religious.

by all means, onto the next topic...
although I hesitate to mention there’s still a month left before the deadline. Maybe Lou just grabbed Kovalchuk in order to swing an even bigger deal with… sorry.
UFAs? IK, Marleau, Frolov, that’s it really.
Wait till this year.

at last...
Can we finally agree that, regardless of whom the Kings might or might not sign as a UFA, the team is going to succeed or fail on the strength of its current holdings? After July 1 of this summer, we’ll know exactly where we stand for the foreseeable future. I can’t imagine a better place to be, in terms of whetting our appetite for the ultimate prize.
