Thursday's Kings-Centric Standings in Points-Blown
Thursday's results:
The Good: Kings win, Stars lose, Avs lose, Nucks lose, Ducks lose, Blues lose, oh, and Simmonds, Moller, Schenn, Loktionov, Voynov, Bernier, Hickey, Teubert, Clifford, Richardson, Parse, Johnson, Brown, Williams, Frolov, Stoll and Handzus are STILL KINGS.
The Bad: Preds win, Sharks win, Wild win.
So?
Tonight the Kings jumped past both Phoenix and Vancouver into 3rd, although they are still tied with Phoenix, and of course they aren't in 3rd in the official standings because of the automatic 1-3 seeds. Anaheim and St. Louis, both a full 7 games (14 blown-points) behind the Kings, are teetering on the brink of joining Edmonton and Columbus in playoff-impossibility-land. Good things happen when you go 10-1 in your last eleven.
[the explanation of what the hell this is, is at the bottom]
- San Jose Sharks 31 (1) +10
- Chicago Blackhawks 34 (2) +7
- Los Angeles Kings 41 (4) --
- Phoenix Coyotes 41 (5) 0
- Vancouver Canucks 42 (3) -1
- Colorado Avalanche 44 (6) -3
- Nashville Predators 46 (7) -5
- Calgary Flames 50 (8) -9
- Detroit Red Wings 50 (9) -9
- Dallas Stars 53 (10) -12
- Minnesota Wild 54 (12) -13
- Anaheim Ducks 55 (11) -14
- St. Louis Blues 55 (13) -14
- Columbus Blue Jackets 63 (14) -22
- Edmonton Oilers 70 (15) -29
These are standings in points-blown.
Two points "awarded" for every loss, one point for every OTL/SOL. Lowest point total is best. Number in parentheses is the official standings (via ESPN). Last number (+/-) is number of points (in my system) ahead or behind Los Angeles. Because it's a Kings-centric universe.
Tie breaker is games-played, except that the winner of the tie breaker is the team who has played more games. If this seems counter-intuitive, consider this: A team with a 10-2 record is better than a team with a 2-2 record, who is, in turn better than a team that's 0-2.

So to summarize, the Kings are 10 behind San Jose. Forward, ever forward!

Degrees of separation
The growing distance between the Kings and the bottom playoff spots astounds and delights. Seems like just a couple of weeks ago that the conventional wisdom was that the Kings would be in a dogfight all the way to the end just to get into the playoffs.
Of course, it may become a dogfight again before it all plays again, but right now all the trend lines are favorable.
I’m comfortable with where the Kings are right now, projected to open at home against Phoenix. I’m not sure that any of the current lower seeds would be easier first-round opponents.

Way to hang in there after blowing the lead tonight. Good on Terry Murray for letting the team’s fighting spirit come through and not setting off panic with a timeout.

Damn
that was one hell of a hockey game.
Also, that photo of Parros getting his shit ruined is currently my desktop background.
Sorry Seattle, 2010 still isn't your year.

Thank you, Quisp, for introducing me to this perspective on wins, etc.
Just a much easier way to view the standings in terms of the whole season and the hill yet to climb.
I did not see the 3d period last night. The pub in my podunk town closes at 9. I think the owner is cooking meth, so he has no stomache for cooking food. What an asshat. In any case I was stoked to see the Kings so confidant and really moving the puck with ease and not pressing. As long as our difference makers continue this they will beat dehtwah tomorrow.
Good lord I am glad this Kovalchuk blardyblar is over. He is a great player, but why screw with this chemistry. Kopitar is our man. He may not be an elite sniper but he does many things well including shrugging of some of the best defensemen in the league when he is going well, and playing very responsible defense. And no way I would want to see DL deal any of the young support players who are jiving like chocolate and peanut butter. I think this team has a great shot at getting deep in the playoffs and I’ve watched them beat some very good teams already this season. Streak record or not, this teams achievements are unprecedented in Kingdom. Period. Dot.

Agreed
I always liked Parros, and I wish the Kings had kept him instead.
Parros has always seemed like a smart and amusing guy. Plus, before the ’stache, he kind of looked like Bruce Campbell.

But now he looks like Zappa, so even better

whoa...
Zappa? You’re treading on hallowed ground, there. Maybe. At least Jim Croce, for sure. Or Leon Redbone? Maybe Ron Jeremy?

He doesn't look like Zappa.
Thurman Munson, maybe.
Wait till this year.
