Baseless Predictions
I got bored, so I looked at everyone's schedules and played out the rest of the season in my mind. Here's the final standings in the West:
- Chicago Blackhawks - 111 pts
- Phoenix Coyotes - 107 pts
- Vancouver Canucks - 103 pts
- San Jose Sharks - 106 pts
- Colorado Avalanche - 101 pts
- Los Angeles Kings - 99 pts
- Detroit Red Wings - 96 pts
- Nashville Predators - 95 pts
- Calgary Flames - 91 pts
- Dallas Stars - 89 pts
- St. Louis Blues - 85 pts
Some interesting things I noticed about the last day of the season. (1) San Jose plays Phoenix. In my mind, the winner of that game gets second and the loser gets fourth. (2) Also on that day, the Kings play Colorado. In my mind, the winner of that game gets fifth and the loser gets sixth. (3) The other big game is Detroit/Chicago. In my mind, if Detroit wins that game, they get seventh and Nashville gets eighth; if they lose, swap 'em. (4) The only seeds that are certain on the last day of the season in my mind are Chicago and Vancouver. (5) The eight playoff teams will already be decided in my mind before the last weekend.
I would be willing to bet the Kings are going to play one of PHX, SJS or VAN in the first round. But the way I played it out in my mind, the match-ups would be:
- Chicago vs. Nashville
- Phoenix vs. Detroit
- Vancouver vs. Los Angeles
- San Jose vs. Colorado
Although I would be happier if the last day's games played out differently and the match-ups became:
- Chicago vs. Detroit
- San Jose vs. Nashville
- Vancouver vs. Colorado
- Phoenix vs. Los Angeles
Of course I could have played them out that way, since I did it in my mind.

Nashville has been in the 7-8 neighborhood for awhile.
It’s not so much about the Preds falling as it is the potential of the Wings rising. But I did say it would come down to the last game of the season whether they’re 7 or 8. Also, this is a very loose premonition. I have no idea what’s really going to happen. (I did look at everyone’s remaining opponents, though, and kind of played through the sequence of games in my mind — for what that’s worth…)
Wait till this year.
it was a good article dude. Like you, I’m hoping for the same first round match ups as you. Chicago vs Detroit and LA vs Phoenix in the 1st round would be awesome :)

speaking of baseless predictions…i’d much rather see the first round match-up with the canucks, and for no real reason other than that’s just what my gut tells me. phoenix is going to be a shitty hockey atmosphere except under one circumstance…the chance to beat l.a. nothing warms the cockles of arizona residents’ blackened hearts more than the chance to beat l.a. in anything. the ‘yotes are white-hot right now, and i really don’t care to face them in an unusually amped up and packed hand-jobing arena. conversely, i think it’s to the kings’ advantage to start out on the road in vancouver, where the canucks (as canada’s only viable shot at a cup champion this year) will be under a lot of pressure to win on the site of canada’s olympic glory. and really, the canucks were shite in last year’s playoffs, despite the first round sweep. the ‘nucks collapse under the pressure in 6 games as memories of their ’93 series with the kings are re-lived, leaving all of b.c. to cry in their molsons, eh. now if you’ll excuse me, i have to reach further into my ass to find a winner for this year’s ncaa basketball tourney.
