Around SBN: Off Tackle Empire interviews Rich Rodriguez

Calling Long Island! Which is worse: these Milbury classics or the Lindros trade? Let your voice be heard!

This is it. The finals.

First round boiled it down to 12, and the second round has it down to these glorious four. I'm sad that the Esposito trade lost out. But I defer to the will of the SB nation. This round you get only one vote, and we'll rank 'em, gold, silver, bronze and nothing.

These are so awful that it’s ALMOST not funny.

The Forsberg/Lindros trade has got to be the worst.

Look at that package they put together to get 88. I mean, if they only knew. That was the best thing ever to happen to the Nordiques…followed shortly by the worst thing ever.

Especially since they essentially gave Colorado the core for their Cup Winning team in ’96.

I voted for Luongo and Jokine for Parrish and Kvasha

My reasoning? Well the trade that is leading so far (Lindros), while ridiculously lopsided, still garnered good players for both teams. Its not like Lindros sucked while he was in Philly.

The Bourque trade? Who the hell knew who would be drafted with that pick.

Yashin was a rising star with an unfortunate ending to a tortured career.

Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha though? USELESS. Easy choice for me.

ditto

I believe I was the one who initially suggested the Luongo trade as the worst ever, and after reading about all the others, and everybody’s reactions, I’m even more convinced.

The Lindros deal was lopsided in terms of players/cash, but it was not a bad trade by a long shot. Lindros arguably did more for Philly than all those other players combined (which basically amount to Forsberg + chump change) did for Quebec/Colorado, or than they would have done for Philly had they not been traded. At worst, both teams benefited about equally. Maybe I’d call this the boldest trade ever, but not the worst. The Gretzky to LA trade was much worse, in terms of who won/lost that one.

The “Borque trade” was not a Borque trade. It was Grahame for a 1st — that pick then being an unknown quantity. There have been countless trades like this over the years, many of them as bad as if not worse than this one.

The Yashin trade was pretty bad.

How can you say Lindros did more for Philly then all the players quebec got when the organization won a Stanley Cup a few years later? I also wouldn’t go as far as to call the rest of the players chump change. Mike Ricci had 78 points in his first year with Quebec, and Duchesne had 82 points from the blueline. They also got a starting goaltender in Hextall and some pretty gritty third/fourth liners in Simon and Huffman.

Not to mention Quebec improved from 20-48-12 to 47-27-10 the year following the trade

Philly also made it to the Cup finals with Lindros. Did they win the trade? No. Worst ever? No.

That’s a good point. I see the logic behind the Philly’s move and heck, even the Kings’ decision to get what they thought would be a starting goalie. I admit I had varying philosophies in the earlier rounds. Did it seem like a bad trade even at the time it was made, or was it only evident in hindsight how detrimental it was? I went for a mix and voted for all of these. Now I’m torn.

I’ve commented before on the poor judgement of the great Bobby Clarke and his trade for Lindros and I will vote once again for this trade as the worst of the group listed.

If I may add one last somewhat salient point to the argument: None of the other trades listed above ended with a Stanley Cup for either club involved in their repesctive transactions. Chara and Spezza helped Ottawa to a finals appearance which was great and all, but the Lindros trade AND the Patrick Roy trade turned the Avalanche into a powerhouse.

I guess I don’t see the Lindros trade as being that bad for Philly. True Quebec got the foundation for the Avanlanche glory years, but for five years or so, Lindros was arguably the dominant player in the NHL, especially since Lemieux was out for much of that time.

Milbury is Far, Far, Far Worse

At the very least, the Flyers got to the Stanley Cup Finals and were a powerhouse in the east during most of Lindros’ time with the Flyers. As bad as that trade is considered today, I want to give you a thought of what might have been.

Imagine if Quebec doesn’t move to Colorado or moves a year later. They still have all that Talent, and Fiset in net. Meanwhile the Flyers do some genius move and get Roy from the Canadians instead. I think the whole situation changes in the Flyers favor. You have to remember how many times the Flyers got to the conference finals only to be out dueled by Brodeur and the Devils. With Roy in net instead of Hextall,Snow,Boucher it’s a different game. Now the Avs become a dominant team but one that’s just missing that final piece to get them the cup.

I just think too much emphasis is on the Lindros trade, no one considers what really got the Avs over the top was the addition of Roy.

Meanwhile all the Islanders got out of 10 years of Milbury lead insanity was 3 playoff series and a grand total of 5 playoff wins. He also fired a coach who would end up winning a Cup, and another coach who was a Islanders legend. By the time Wang took over it was already overdue to Dump Milbury. Instead he got another six years to bury the team just a bit further.

I try not to pimp my blog too much, but read this post to see what a mid 00s Islanders team might have looked like without Milbury in control

Come on Isles! 11-0-0 or 10-0-1 I'm not picky! Playoffs!

I was wondering

Where the polls were in the previous posts. I didn’t realize you guys were using Polldaddy.com, I had them blocked (its scriptblocker and its set to block unless I change it) and couldn’t see any of the polls. I thought I was going crazy.

oh that sucks

yeah, i would have used the SBN on-board poll thing, but it doesn’t allow multiple selections (i.e. you can only give one answer, and I wanted people to be able to select the four worst or three worst from each era…)

Wait till this year.
