I watched the 1st period on TV

Just wanted to see how Foxy would do. He seemed a little nervous about it, but I think he did okay, all in all.

The thing is, it’s a different skill set (certainly a different mind set) doing play-by-play than doing commentary. It’s not that easy jumping from one to the other.

Totally

listening to Fox, I feel like I’m the one suddenly realizing that. There are so many little things one takes for granted, like the fact that if you start out at a high, excited pitch, you have nowhere to go when the action gets exciting. And then there’s the fact that Fox and Evans are both quick-talking hockey-smart guys. They’re not alike as color-guys, but listening to them in conversation, I feel like I’m listening to a 33 rpm record on 45.*

*This is reference to an antiquated recording medium popular in the mid-to-late 20th century.

Wait till this year.

And I wonder how much of that is a commentator's mindset

Because you never really know when you’re going to get a chance to share your insight, or how long you’ll have to complete your thought when the chance comes. So you have to get it out in one quick burst. Especially if you’re Foxy, and you’re analytical enough so that you actually have something to say.

But I also think that Foxy is high-energy by nature. He doesn’t do it as much anymore, but I like how he sometimes goes “Whoa!” in the background as Bob is narrating the action.

yeah, i love those foxy background exclamations

don’t get me wrong, i think what fox had to do last night was nearly impossible to pull off. it just made me appreciate what those guys, even the bad ones, have to do.

Wait till this year.

Definitely

I had a feeling it was going to be rough, but he did a great job given the circumstances. And I completely agree that I don’t need coffee after that game.
