Let’s be perfectly honest…why would people choose to give Wayne any nickname with the term “Night” in it? I think we all know why.
Meat Train was the Battle of California’s attempt to give an appropriate nickname to a spectacular player that did not lazily or unorignally had the term “Night” or “Dark” or “Black” in it.
Everytime I hear Wayne called “Night Train,” I cringe…

Huh, no. Their nickname was, as Niesy pointed out, was MIDNIGHT! So you’re way off base there…
As for you cringing, well that’s just your feeling. Try not to project it onto others. Let me be perfectly honest. So what if Simmonds is black? Should we be so politically correct to pretend he isn’t? Should the Kings not have him drop the puck with Willie O’ree because he’s black?
Night train isn’t demeaning in anyway whatsoever. I think of GnR’s song and it’s perfect for him.

I’m not advocating using a name besides “night train” because of political correctness. I’m saying that Wayne is an outstanding player who deserves a great nickname which doesn’t lazily center around the fact that he’s African-Canadian. Let’s show some cognitive effort and orginality.

“Night Train” is already taken, as it was Dick Lane’s nickname. Besides, what is a “night train?” A train that runs at night? That’s dumb.
Meat Train, on the other hand, implies a train packed with meat, which is much more apt. Plus it’s fun to yell “MEAT!” when he does something cool.
The West Coast is the Best Coast.

If you can believe it, that was a movie poster from an actual 2008 release and not made up for that blog article. So at least now we all understand the origin of Wayne’s nomenclature here at SB Nation. People will call him other things at other blogs. It’s just cool that the Kings have a young forward who’s game is so admirable that he clearly warrants having a nickname in just his second season…
