Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Only Gaining That Experience; Canucks 3, Kings 2 (OT)

First of all, what a freaking game. I wasn't completely stressed out until the puck dropped to start the game, but once it did, I was completely captivated. The Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings were all over the place in terms of consistency throughout regulation, but the Kings were the ones who could hardly control their own passes and were struggling to break up the Canucks' rushes. I was pretty surprised at how back and forth the play was, but credit to the Kings D-men, except for one who I'll mention later, as they blocked 18 shots toward their net.

Going back to the regular season, the last few games were frustrating ones, to say the least, but last night's was insanely stressful. I couldn't believe how I was reacting to every shot going either way. It was like the world was going to end if the Canucks scored on anyone of their 44 shots on net. And I'm going to have to deal with this for the next while? I guess it's a luxury for my team to be in the playoffs but I don't want to suffer a heart attack any time soon!

Even though the Kings lost the opening game, there are definitely positives to take from this one. Here are a few:

  • Jonathan Quick was great. Whatever he did to refocus did the job and he made some insane saves to keep his team in the game. He was the player of the night for the Kings, no question and was the only one who was consistent through the entire game.
  • I'm definitely grateful that Brad Richardson was okay after his forced face plant into the boards courtesy of Andrew Alberts. Supplementary discipline? I'd expect it and I'm not going to lay out the reasons why; that story was a few months ago.
  • [Update]: I can't remember which Canucks it was, but Jack Johnson absolutely destroyed him as he was coming around behind Quick. Jack met him at the pass and laid him out. Awesome.

But there are also negatives to take from this game, which the Kings will HOPEFULLY use to wake up.

  • Randy Jones needs to play less than 21:54 TOI. I'm talking way less. His weak sauce pass in the neutral zone in overtime lead to the game-winner for Mikael Samuelsson. His carelessness ended the game for the Kings! The magnitude of that statement is almost unbearable. He instills less and less confidence in me every shift he takes out out on the power play also. Terry Murray needs to make a decision on this problem ASAP.
  • Hi and Hello to a one Mr. Anze Kopitar. Where in the hell were you in that game? Kopi was out there for an alleged 24 minutes, but hrm, there wasn't much I was gleaning from him. This would have been more frustrating if it weren't for other things equally frustrating.
  • Ryan Smyth was trying his hardest to maintain some semblance of a first line, but there's something to say when the team gets both goals from specialty teams only.

Gut check? Reality check? Sure, why not. But what I'll keep in mind is that this team is gaining invaluable playoff experience for all of the young studs. In a Slam Sports article, Kings coach Terry Murray said about Drew Doughty, "There's going to be an innocence coming into [the playoffs]. You saw that with Drew at the Olympics."

There is no doubt the Kings need to adjust to how the Canucks are charging at them every shift, and they have a day and a half to figure it out. Game 2 is on Saturday. More than enough time to revamp the game plan if need be.

Go Kings Go.

Alberts

Canuck fans are hoping he is disciplined as well. We dont want to see him on the ice for another game. He is that terribad.

Alberts (x2)

Ditto, Mojo J. Alberts may have been serviceable in the Southeast, but when the pace picks up (as in the West), he just can’t keep up.

by ChuckinNux on Apr 16, 2010 8:47 AM PDT reply actions

Someone explain to me

If Alberts is so terrible, why is the coaching staff keeping him in the lineup over other (apparently more capable) players?

by Connie Kim on Apr 16, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably the same way TM insists on keeping Ivanans in….

… for the sane reasons Murray plays people like Jones over 20 minutes in a playoff game.

by JT_Dutch on Apr 16, 2010 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

hahaha … nice slip by me on “same” vice “sane”. Nothing is “sane” about the reasons to play Jones.

by JT_Dutch on Apr 16, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

no other choice really.

Aaron Rome would be in there, but he was mysteriously hurt in the 2nd last game of the season and may be a game 2 start.
Willie Mitchell would be in there, but he got run from behind by Gino Malkin (no penalty – thanks NHL), got concussed as in gone for the season.
Brad Lukowich would be in there, but he was sent to the minors for cap reasons, then underwent season ending shoulder surgery.
Mathieu Schneider would be in there, but he apparently put his needs above the team, got sent to the minors and then was traded to the Coyotes.
Nolan Baumgartner is an offensive-minded D-man that would not be a good fit with Bieksa in that D-pairing

aside from that, Andrew Alberts totally deserves to be in there.

Hey, ChuckinNux,

I’m interested in your comment about Mathieu Schneider putting “his needs above the team”…are you referring to anything specific? I’d love to hear some Vancouver dirt.

by JZarris on Apr 16, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Schneider

Hey, JZarris.

Here is a snippet from the local Vancouver rag (The Province)

Basically, it was a playing time issue.

Early reports were that he was signed to the Canucks as a depth defenseman (6th/7th) who would take a role on the 2nd powerplay unit. He was squeezed out of that position in no small part due to the re-emergence of Christian Ehrhoff, but also due to defensive lapses and general ineffectiveness. He spent some time in the pressbox as a healthy scratch, and eventually took a sabbatical from the team, where the playing time issue / healthy scratches came to light. Eventually he was waived to Manitoba and then traded at the deadline for a low-round draft pick.

Too bad. loved Schneider’s shot (when it was put on net). that and his brilliant smile. a flash of those choppers alone would blind opposing players, allowing for an unobstructed shot on net.

by ChuckinNux on Apr 16, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Interesting. I was surprised when he was traded so it is nice to get a little “local knowledge” on why it happened.

Thanks, and I hope to “see” you in a game seven where the Kings will win in double OT after a shot goes in off of Andrew Burrows’ rear end while he is complaining to a referee!!!

Injuries. You remove Alberts and we’re left with Rome (still day to day), Baumer (minors) and Oberg (minors).

John be nimble...

Quick was so amazing last night! Even though the final outcome wasn’t what the Kings wanted, all the “experts” who say that Quick should be benched in favor of Bernier should really be ashamed of themselves…

and on the 93rd postseason of the National Hockey League, the Slovakian-hockeygod Zeus commanded from high atop Mount Figueroa..."RELEASE THE MEAT TRAIN!" And it was good.

Quick was pretty studly last night

And that was definitely the most encouraging single thing for the Kings about last night. If only they could have pulled it out in OT and actually won the game, you could look it as the flip side of what Luongo did to the Kings earlier in the season, i.e., stop a bucketload of shots and make the difference in a close game.

Basically, I’m disappointed about last night’s result, but hardly in a funk. If Quick has his edge back, then he’ll give the Kings a chance to win. And besides, I think Connie is right to think of this as a learning experience for a young team. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them improve over the course of the series.

Kings props

- Kings PP looked awesome last night. Patient with the puck once they settled into the zone.

- Loved the effort from Brown in keeping the play alive on the 2nd goal; taking the puck away from Pettinger and O’Brien, then making a smart play to the down low player (Frolov?) for the quick feed to Modin.

- Quick made game-saving stops in the first period, a la Bryzgalov vs. the Red Wings. If it weren’t for him, it could have been Burrows – 5 Kings – 0 after 20 minutes.

by ChuckinNux on Apr 16, 2010 8:51 AM PDT reply actions

What a game....

Quick definitely answered some questions about his recent play with that game!
He played about as well as you can ask a goalie to play in his first playoff game. Gave the Kings every chance to win…
Jones….i dont think i need to say anymore about that guy….except…HOLY CRAP YOU DUMB ASS!!!!!
All in all i think we showed the Canucks that we are not going to get smashed….
This series WILL go at least 6, probably 7 games! and what a series it will be!

Hello from a Flyers fan, and a hockey lover in general.

I saw the first two periods of the game last night and it was really intense. (I’d have watched the whole thing, but I’m on the East Coast and I was pretty tired.) It’s definitely going to be a helluva series. May the best team win.

I mentioned my Flyers fandom at the outset just so I could express my condolences to both the Canucks and Kings fanbases. The Flyers’ 3rd defensive pairing last year was Randy Jones and Andrew Alberts. I don’t think I need to say any more than that.

Best of luck to both clubs the rest of the way. If last night was any indication, it’s going to be a long and exciting series.

Thanks for checking in. I hope your boys continue to impress against Marty & the Devs like they did in Game 1! If Dean Lombardi still has his reciept from the Randy Jones acquisition, is it too late to ask for a refund or exchange?

Unfortunately, yes. He’ll be off the Flyers’ and Kings’ books next season, so no worries there.

We’re not much better off on the third pairing ourselves, as it is usually comprised of a combination of Ryan Parent, Lukas Krajicek, and/or Oskars Bartulis.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 16, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought Ryan Parent was looking good for the Flyers? I haven’t been keeping tabs though, so I could be completely off base?

by Connie Kim on Apr 16, 2010 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

He’s been… okay. The problem is that he’s never really had a healthy season – including this one – so he’s in and out of the lineup too often. It seems like whenever he gets going, he gets hurt and then goes back to square one.

He’s better than the rookie Bartulis and the castoff Krajicek, but that’s not saying a heck of a lot. He’s most effective when paired with Kimmo Timonen… but so is anyone. Hell, I’d be effective when paired with Kimmo Timonen.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 16, 2010 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Seriously. Timonen is the guy.

Randomly, how are Flyers fans feeling over losing Luca Sbisa? I was always curious but never investigated.

by Connie Kim on Apr 16, 2010 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

We miss him but we’re not devastated about it. For one, he helped to bring Chris Pronger here – although more fans were upset over losing him than the uber-underachieving Joffrey Lupul.

By the same token, the Flyers have a number of defensive prospects that they’re pretty high on, like Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon. So while it was tough to part with Sbisa, it’s not like the well is dry back there.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 16, 2010 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, Jones was a waiver pick-up

So he’s kind of like a promotional freebie that you picked up (like a trade show gewgaw), and you can’t quite bear to get rid of it even though it’s not really adequate. No return, no exchange, ’cause you got him for free. :-(

by DougX on Apr 16, 2010 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Makes me miss Kyle Quincey that much more.

by Connie Kim on Apr 16, 2010 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it would be nice to have him back

Wasn’t he scratched for one of the Kings games against the Avs? Heck, if they don’t want him….

HA.

Hi-larious.

“All sales final”.

Reporters asked Sedin how he could possibly have accomplished the feat.
"Look guys, I don’t know how to say this any other way, I’m really fucking fast. I’m like a greased up Pavel Bure that craps lightning," he said.

I haven’t stopped laughing. My condolences.

by Connie Kim on Apr 16, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Hey, we’ve lived to tell about it.

Alberts was actually the steadier of the two, if you can believe that. In fairness to Jones, he was coming off pre-season hip surgery, but still.

Two seasons ago, Jones was often paired with the slow-but-steady Derian Hatcher and Jason “Gator” Smith. When he suddenly ended up with Andrew Alberts, there was no longer anyone to cover for his mistakes.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 16, 2010 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Paired with Hatcher and Smith? Talk about a luxury. He’s getting more exposed here, but Murray likes him….

by Connie Kim on Apr 16, 2010 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Murray was one of John Stevens’ assistant coaches during that season, so I’m actually not surprised that the Kings claimed Jones. Randy didn’t look as bad back then because he was free to be mobile and jump up into the play whereas Hatcher or Smith would hang back (understandably). So if Jones got caught up ice, someone would be there to cover for him.

For what it’s worth, I saw the CBC broadcast of the game last night, so I heard Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson. They seemed confused as to why Murray didn’t send out Doughty and Scuderi against the Sedins right away.

Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?

by mikefive on Apr 16, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe Murray was hoping to use Doughty’s offensive abilities against a lesser line?

When the Sedins are on their game (and last night they were), it makes little sense to have your best offensive D-man expending energy in a checking effort.

great game, kings could have had that game...

and can do the same tonight, and get out with a Victory! and someone needs to sock those dumb ass green dudes, wow, they must be starving for entertainment up there, hahhahha! crazy Candians!
