Need Positives; Canucks 6, Kings 4

After a heart breaker last night, the series is now tied 2-2 with the Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks headed back to BC. There were plenty of frustrating aspects in the game, but in these instances, there have to be positives to latch on to in order to make the last three games ones to look forward to. Myself? I'm staying positive because there were times in the regular season where the Kings faltered in the third period, but they were always able to get their play back on track in subsequent games. I see last night as one of those nights; the Kings brought it in the first two periods but just could not separate themselves from the Canucks on the scoreboard. Not completely uncharacteristically, the third period was their definite downfall as Vancouver scored four times (with one empty netter).

When I got home from the game, I was so down I didn't know what to write. The arena was jumping, once again, there was a ton going on on the ice, and it was flooding through my memory bank all at once. But I will say that this is FAR from over. There are still three games left in this series, which means the Kings have three more chances to get back to working on the same page. A definite positive was that the Kings' power play is still ticking along. Last night wasn't a 3 for 3 output like Game 3 was, but it was still efficient. By the way, this too many men penalty is sure getting old.

Tell me what you thought! How did the Kings look?

*~*~*~*~*

Don't forget to go to Nucks Misconduct to get the game perspective from the other side.

Interestingly enough, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was at STAPLES Center. He sat down with the Kings for a pre-game interview. I have yet to view this in its entirety, so when I do, I'll let you know what I think. My initial thought is, "Please check your sound before starting the interview."

Also, in case you missed the memo, NHL.com and Facebook have come together to do some liking.

I come in peace

I thought the Kings looked pretty good last night; most of their goals were a matter of outmuscling or straight beating out Canucks defenders to the puck.

i.e. Brown 2-1 PP goal, Kopitar 3-2 delayed penalty goal, Simmonds 4-4 goal

They caught a bit of a break on their first PP goal (Doughty) because Bieksa tried (and failed) to help Luongo to corral the loose puck. But in the playoffs, you often create your own luck, and the Kings PP has been awesome! Doughty and Johnson man the points extremely well and force the Canucks to switch and move. Smyth, Brown, Handzus and Modin are big bodies that cause havoc down low and make it difficult for Luongo to stop pucks. I just feel that the Kings need to translate their cycle game 5-5 to make this series more in their favour.

The 3rd period, as described by Hughson and Simpson (CBC) has been the Canucks best period of the season. They led the league in 3rd period comebacks, gaining 25 points over the course of the regular season. They were bailed out by a couple of huge saves by Luongo (first on Brown and then on Frolov), allowing them to establish their game and build momentum.

We’ll see how far that momentum carries them, and if the Kings have an answer (I think they do). Either way, we’ll find out for certain tomorrow.

Welcome!

Thanks for joining. The Canucks third period was a monster one. 17 shots? Ouch.

Bettman was Bettman

If you concentrate on the substance of what he had to say, it really wasn’t very controversial, but listening to him made you squirm. He even tried to congratulate Bob on his 50 years in broadcasting, but instead of having something eloquent prepared in advance, he just kind of stumbled along and it came out sounding like not much of anything.

by DougX on Apr 22, 2010 9:43 AM PDT reply actions

he is a lawyer, so most of the drivel that comes out of his mouth is filled with innuendo and doublespeak.

he did what a boss should do, which is publicly back ‘his guys’. what might happen behind the scenes is for us to speculate about.

If I were a conspiracy-theorist (which I’m not – I lost my tin-foil hat when I graduated from high school) my guess about what the disallowed goal ruling would have looked like was something like this.

/excellent, Smithers

You know...

Bettman could single-handedly bring peace to the Middle East, and it would still be intolerable to watch him talk. It doesn’t matter even on those very rare occasions when he’s not wrong: he’s just so greasy, it’s impossible to trust a word he says.

Great series so far!

Nail biting for me! I think the Kings just couldn’t contain the Canucks and clear their zone. The Canucks looked like they were on the power play the whole time which cost the Kings. Hopefully they learned from this.

Looking for a positive after last night? We shouldn’t have to hear anything about conspiracies for another 34.5 hours, at least…

Come now, we're Canadian.

It doesn’t count as overreacting to hockey until we riot and light things on fire. I’ll provide the torches!

The media exists to stir trouble and get ratings. In sports, that often means complaining about officiating and having a victim complex when the home team loses. Unfortunately, here in Canada we’ve raised hockey conspiracy theories into an art form.

My take on last nights game is that Quick is not a great goalie at all, i have never really like him and in the 3rd last night he cemented it for ever in my book, he let 2 shots go in that he saw clearly and they were not tipped or anything he just got flat out beat! I say get him out of LA quick, rofl

If practice makes perfect....
Yet nobodies perfect.....
Then why practice ???

C'mon Quick is awesome...

Friendly advice!

Don’t be a Montreal fan about your goalies. Quick is good. He’s also young. He’ll get better, assuming your media doesn’t do what Montreal did to Carey Price.

Every goalie has off-nights, no matter how good they are. You may remember a little no-name goalie called Patrick Roy. In his final game in Montreal, against the Red Wings, he allowed 9 goals on 26 shots. He later forced a trade because his coach, Mario Trembley, refused to pull him even though he was getting shelled… but “Le Trade”, and how Colorado won two Stanley Cups, is a different story.

Long and short is, just because a goalie has a bad night (or in Quick’s case one bad period on one night) doesn’t make him a bad goalie. Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Series

I’m a long time Kings fan, and it’s great to see a solid mix of young & veteran players. I think they need to win tonight in BC to win the series. I think teams are usually a reflection of their coach, & I think Murray’s demeanor is important for the team, especially the younger guys.

Not that anyone cares...

So i was in Seattle for Game 4…I found a sports bar in West Seattle called the Spectator….hole in the wall but flat screens galore and 2 dollar happy hour pints! Also was 1 block from my hotel! Nice!!!
Anyway…that game had me looking like a crazy man running around the bar drunk, and cheering for…Los Angeles?
I must admit i got some dirty looks but i didnt care…now about the game…
I really dont know what to say. We had the lead and failed to hold it. We fought back to tie then gave it away.
It felt to me like the Kings were trying to play a more up tempo chance for chance game with Van and it backfired in the third. I would have liked less premium scoring chances for Van, but it is what it is…

Heres looking foward to game 5!!!!!!!

My fiancé got mad at me cuz i said i wont cry at our wedding, but i would most certainly cry if the Kings win the Cup….

You guys can all like Quick and even love him, all i did was state how i felt about the Kings goalie and like typical Kings fans and Los Doyers fans you guys tried to get personal about it ? What the hell does my liking the Lakers have to do with anything remotely Kings related??But seeing as someone brought it up, I do think the Lakers would have won last night if Kobe hadn’t of tried to force the issue and show up Durant for that 3 possession debacle that had him shoot 2 bad three’s and had one slapped back at him and on all 3 OKC ran back the other way for 6 easy points.

P.S. To answer your honest question Connie, i think he is ok for the regular season but in this his first playoffs, he has let in some shots that to ME, look like a good playoff netminder would have snatched right up.In alot of playoff games it can be said that a great goalie can carry a team thru the series if he gets hot, to me in this series so far it looks like the regular skaters are carrying Quick thru the series, because god forbid if they should not clear the puck as often as they have, or play some good defense like they have then Vancouver probably is up 3-1 or 4-0 with a broom. What i’m saying is that to win in the playoffs your goalie can’t allow 2 or 3 shots that he clearly saw get past him

Luongo hasn’t been exceptionally sharp either. On the other coast, Fleury and Elliott have both been bad at stretches and good at other stretches. Leclaire was nothing short of fantastic last night though…

Quick is a good, quick (haha) goalie. He’s made some huge saves this series, and if the Kings beat my Nucks, he’s going to be a pretty major part of the reason.
