WTF WAS THAT?!

VANCOUVER, CANADA - APRIL 23: Goalie Erik Ersberg #31 of the Los Angeles Kings fails to stop the shot of Mikael Samuelsson #26 of the Vancouver Canucks during the third period in Game Five of the Western Conference Quarterfinals during the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 23, 2010 at General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. (Photo by Rich Lam/Getty Images)

I will answer my own question.

Game One: Kings are out-played but hang in there, mostly due to Jonathan Quick standing on his head; but for a couple of bounces, could have won in OT.

Game Two: Kings play better but Vancouver is still pretty scary 5-on-5. The Kings' PP is a game-changer and that levels the playing field. Could go either way, but the Kings win in OT.

Game Three: Kings destroy Vancouver for most of the game, then get running around a bit and almost let them back in. Almost but not quite. You know, thanks to the intervention of Bettman.

Game Four: Kings play their best two periods of the series, then freak out and blow it in the last 20 minutes. Kings lose and apparently are emotionally scarred as a result. Could have been up 3-1, now they're knotted at 2. Would've, could've, should've.

To this point, the Kings have lost twice and neither one was what I would call a familiar loss, by which I mean, the kind of games the Kings usually lose. That, if nothing else, gives me hope.

Game five: Now THAT's a Kings loss I've seen a million times. Quick is somewhere else, Dustin Brown is skating the puck from the boards into the slot and handing it off to the other team, everyone is shooting wide, the PP can't get set up, Anze Kopitar is working the corners like a madman but forgets about the part where he gets a f***ing shot on goal, Randy Jones is spacing out behind the goal WITH THE PUCK and turning it over (I have actually never seen that particular flavor of turn-over before, where the defenseman is literally surprised by a forward leaping out from around the front of the net, like he was hiding), Sean O'Donnell looks like he's in his early to mid 50s, players just kind of wiping out while trying to make plays, Justin Williams making two potentially deadly up-the-middle passes both of which are intercepted in one shift...I could go on.

And I will! I was so happy to see the return of the stupid power play telegraph-every-pass-while-standing-still strategem. Why is Kopitar the QB on the 5-on-3? Why is he still the QB when we go back to 5-on-4? Didn't anyone see the first 12 power-plays we had in this series? I've seen better power-plays on one of these.

The only things that redeemed the game at all:

  • The bit where Brown was checked into the Kings bench and looked like Elmer Fudd getting his head stuck in a rabbit hole.
  • The fact that I got fed up and changed the channel to the Red Wings game and when I turned back maybe sixty seconds later two goals had been scored and somehow Quick was back in.
  • Having missed the second Kings goal, I said to myself, "bet it was Fredrik Modin or Brad Richardson." And it was. I really like him.
  • Terry Murray yelling at Ryan Smyth and Smyth transforming into his pee-wee self before my eyes.
  • Mark Hardy interviewed at the start of the third and basically looking already defeated and/or about ready to break furniture.
  • The ref calling Smyth for goaltender interference and while calling it he's shaking his head like, "you f-ing idiot, what do you expect me to do?"
  • Rich Clune's fight. I think I saw that very fight in the original Bad News Bears.
  • Fox Sports West putting up little banners about what's coming up in the second period intermission during the third period.
  • When was the last time you saw a back-up goalie come in for a couple of shifts, face four shots and leave with a SV% of .500 and a GAA of 9.25? (I feel bad though, since that's probably the last we will have seen of Erik Ersberg in a Kings uniform. Maybe not. But. Probably, come on.)

While I'm thinking about it, those green things are evil. I think we should counter by getting about 500 of the most beautiful women in the world and seating them several rows deep all around the Canucks' bench. That shouldn't be hard to do. Or maybe do that thing from Godfather 2 where they fly in Pentangeli's brother.

Now that my hostility is slightly vented, let's look at some numbers:

  • Shots by Kopitar, Williams, Richardson, Smyth, Alexander Frolov and Brown added together: 5.
  • Shots by Wayne Simmonds all by himself: 5.
  • Shots by Michal Handzus: 4. Drew Doughty also had 4.
  • The Canucks scored 7 goals on 30 shots. That's a .767 SV%. One could reasonably expect to do better on 30 penalty shots.

Last time I saw a goalie with those %s...

Kings in Buffalo 10-2. Not coincidentally also the last (and I thought would be the ONLY) time I’d see a goaltender pulled TWICE… If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times— HSBC and Sabres fans (ok mostly I seemed to be surrounded by Maple Leaf fans who can’t get tickets and so come to Sabres fans and sit in the lower bowl)… are the nicest people in the world! By the time Andy did the switcheroo AGAIN… they were buying me and my ex beer.. .

A Nuck fan, obviously...

But I just wanted to say that I’ve been very impressed with what LA has brought to the table. I have gained much respect for the Kings, and I want to thank the team for providing such an entertaining first round in these playoffs. I can see you guys coming back with a vengeance on Sunday. Best of luck, and if LA pulls out a win in game 7, they will have deserved it.

I totally agree with everything nucklord said.

Except fot the game seven bit. I really want this over on Sunday. Sorry.

Me three.

And your breakdown was both funny and informative Quisp.

What did you think of the TM “clown” comment in relation to O’Brien?

Its not the first time someone celebrated after a fight, right?

Samuelsson carries a Swedish passport, but Henrik thinks of his fellow countryman as quasi-Canadian. He plays with an edge and has lots to say to opponents on the ice.

vancitydan, I know I’m not Quisp but IMO O’Brien is was indeed acting clownish.

It’s not as if he dominated the fight a-la Tie Domi and coming from a guy who has, well, acted clownish throughout the season (Practice? We’re talking about practice?) it was a little tough to take.

Of course the score at the time, Quick’s performance, and the fact that Randy Jones is on the roster may have exacerbated the situation!

Thanks for coming around the site. It’s nice to have reasonable fans of the opposition!

by JZarris on Apr 24, 2010 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions

disclaimer: I didn't see the fight, because by that time I was switching back and forth from Close Encounters of the Third Kind on TNT.

In general, O’Brien does seem to be a bit of a clown. I guess there’s an argument to make that this is behavior you’re more likely to see in the AHL or somewhere else like that where they ride buses. But my main thought about the incident I didn’t see is, ooh, good, the Fates have been tempted. That’s the kind of thing that can bite you in the ass, karma-wise.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Apr 24, 2010 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions

“Clown” is probably the most mild word that one could use to describe O’Brien. And I’m not going off of just last night.

by Connie Kim on Apr 24, 2010 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

You’re not the only one who thinks that. You just wouldn’t know until your liver sustains the damage it has, if you were asked to drink every time SOB does something stupid.

Thanks LA, Richardson and Simmons has been a revelation. Smyth’s downfall has also been a revelation.

And I can go on and on and on about Doughty.

by Vancouverguy on Apr 24, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

He is that dumb cousin everyone loves because he is fun at parties.

SOB was acting a bit buffoonish after the fight. I chalk that up to adrenaline. From the Canuck coach’s comments afterwards, he was not too upset by it. Simmonds had been talking smack all game, and was one of the few Kings to go after skilled players.

That fight was going to happen soon anyhow.

Why the H-e- double hockey sticks Clune thought it was a good idea to go after Rypien a few seconds later is beyond me. Is he that new? Ripper is the most feared middleweight in the league.

But he did, and now he is hurt.

I doubt that fight, or even Ripper’s is a huge motivator in Game 6. If the score might have been closer…maybe. But the Kings had to feel totally beaten last night.

They are young tho’…so maybe they shake it off. I have a feeling Game 6 is the best one yet…

And yes, like VG said…Doughty is THE man. Even with talking smack and whatnot. That boy can play. Out of the three nominated, he is my pick for the Norris.

We are jealous in Hollywood North.

Also, normally when one fighter removes his helmet the other guy does too. I know O’Brien doesn’t wear a shield, but if one guy does it you would think the other would too. Hell, even Sean Avery does it.

To answer the question about a goalie getting pulled and then going back in after the back-up is pulled, I’ve seen it in Caps games twice (If I’m remembering correctly).

Once was last year against the Rangers, – Theo had an awful first and was pulled, Johnson finished the first, and Theo was back in to start the second. But that was due to an injury Johnson had at the time.

The other was during the 07-08 season against the Bruins. Thomas was pulled in favor of Auld, and then Auld was pulled for Thomas after a few goals. Though it wasn’t as rapid succession as the Quick-Ersberg-Quick change-up.

I have to go. But if I find one single dog hair when I get back, I'll rub... sand... in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... coarse.

Ok holy Shit!!!

First off let me say wtf also because i must have said it a hundred times throughout the game…
That game had 3 periods (obviously not an OT game i had hoped for and predicted since that would at least mean we fought the good fight) but it looked like 3 completely different Kings teams.

Period one: Kings dont play poorly at all. We got a bad bounce off the boards for their first goal, but we got one also off Erhoff, so in effect its 1-0 on a bad goal by Quick(even though he was mildly screened) and i think we can all agree not the end of the world. We had a PP goal and only one Randy Jones turn over for a goal. Ill take it and have all kinds of hope.
Period Two: I thought we saw a glimpse of the team from period 3 game 4 here. A kings team trying to run and gun with was it the second highest scoring team in the league? I think Bob Miller said it about 20 times, but i was too mad to listen to Papa Bear…Quick-get your head out of your ass and think about what you have done… and cmon EE, just give us a chance to get back in it! Youve done it before and lets see you offer up some redemtion for all the shit i personnally gave you all season!

Period Three: shit fuck and dammit….
OOopps! Yeah right! it completely clear you are not an NHL caliber number 1 goalie. Thats it discussion over on him.
Quisp you called it on Randy Jones turning the puck over behind our net! That guy is an asshole.
I too became so frustrated at this point i turned to the Detroit game, hoping to see the Red Wings getting blown out also so i could feel better…nope. Back to the Kings and Modin scores and quick is back in.
Side note—-Modin i like and wouldnt mind seeing him back, Halpern i barely notice except for when he does something that pisses me off.
The period gets worse and worse with every goal and eventually i just go to Target to get my dauhter more formula.
Whatever imposters found their way onto the ice for game 5, i hope we never see them again.

I have watched a lot of bad hockey, but for some reason i couldnt even watch anymore. It hurt me to watch. I almost tossed my dinner twice. It sucked.
My only glimmer of hope lies in this weird thought process, so try to follow and if you cant, thats fine. Its 5:30am and im on a crap load of Viccodin cuz ive had migraines all week!
In the 2 kings win-Jones out of lineup, Kopitar plays like the raccoon Jesus we know he can be…
in the 3 Kings losses- No Randy Jones Shots against over 30….Kopitar is there somewhere fighting along the boards…but really thats it…
We lost game 1, then won 2 straight.
Now we have lost two staright. If the pattern of of 2 in a row continues, we should win. No team in this series can win 3 in a row, but we have both won back to back so its possible, if the Kings from Game 3 show up….
If Quick can wake up for game 6 and not give us every reason to rekindle those “Where is Bernier?” discussions, then we also have a legitimate shot.
There you have it! Insomnia+viccodin+a pissed off Kings fan= a very long comment.
Hopefully the last one of this kind for the rest of the postseason.
Now….
GO KINGS GO!!!!

i also had the two-wins alternating pattern thought

we are probably grasping at straws. actually, i hate to say it but this reminds me of the ‘93 finals, "hey we’re winning, hey we’re up 2 games to – WHAT? lose lose lose lose dammit. "

I don’t think the Quick legit #1 discussion is over by any means, but I would have to agree with jim fox in summing up Quick’s playoff performance on the whole as just “okay.” But that’s an average of brilliant (in a loss), good, great/eh, good/bad and bad. if the last two games were games one and two, I think Quick would be done. As it is, he’s going to get one or two more chances.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Apr 24, 2010 8:53 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah i was just stating that EE would be done for good…and I dont think Murray would bring Bernier up for game 6 facing elimination for his first playoff game evr at this level, so saying he would do it for a game 7 would be out of the question.
Quick will get the whole series, win or lose, to prove he belongs.
I remember a post maybe a month ago where you outlined the fact that Kings goaltending has been so inept for the past, oh, well since Potvin really, and so now when we see Quick making saves that he shouldnt, winning 39 games, being our true number 1 guy we think we have a god tending our net. The reality is he has been in the league for a season and a half and this being his first playoffs directly preceeded by his first major slump in the NHL, Ill still say hes been good in this series. This last game was awful, but Luongo was awful just 2 games ago. So if we can continue to pull at straws id like to think Quick can look at Luongo as an example that this is the playoffs, you are not out until your out, he can still rebound and win a few games. The real shining lite for Jonathan Quick is that he does have the ability to get in a groove fast and win a game all by himself.
Im gonna keep my fingers crossed and just enjoy my team fighting for our lives in game 6.
I have a game of my own at 4;30pm so after i shower its up to the bar at the rink i play at to finish off the day.
No matter what happens in this game i am still proud of this team! A bunch of rookies and veterans tossed into the mix, for most of them the first tme playing together, and we surpass most expectations and push a seasoned team to actually fight for a first round playoff series…kudos Los Angeles Kings…Kudos!!!

Randy Jones is spacing out behind the goal WITH THE PUCK and turning it over (I have actually never seen that particular flavor of turn-over before, where the defenseman is literally surprised by a forward leaping out from around the front of the net, like he was hiding)
Didn’t anyone see the first 12 power-plays we had in this series? I’ve seen better power-plays on one of these.

Haha…sob

That game was sooooo bad, but this post is too good. I’m criggling into my tea now.

Maybe Murray will bench everyone and he and Hardy will just lace up the skates. After they watch the review tapes and smash the TV screen on players’ heads.

Much love to the Vancouver fans visiting our site during this series. You all have been more than respectful and your insights are appreciated.

To the Kings “fans” who are discrediting Quick’s accomplishments this season and are calling for a Game 6 start by Ersberg or Bernier – go root for the Ducks please or take that nonsense over to LGK or Hammond’s comment section. Jon Quick has simply played one of the most outstanding single seasons ever by a Kings goaltender and deserves our unconditional support after a rough outing in game 5.

Did you think Mr Blueballs, that it was a mistake to put him back in?

I did. Sure, Ersberg looked shaky. But he only got to face 4 shots. The kid has played good before right?

Putting Quick back in, and then having another goal scored on him, was a mistake because now his last thought is of a goal in, instead of using that time to marshall his resources.

I mean, here he is on the bench, and decompressing, and all of the sudden he hears the coach yelling for “Johnny to get back in there…”Just my thoughts.

It is fun when rivals can just talk puck without hyperbole, no? A good party always reflects well on the host…

I totally agree that keeping Quick out for the remainder of game 5 would have been the right thing to do. The game was a sunk cost at that point and letting Ersberg endure the remainder of the barrage would have been the better thing for Quick’s psyche, I believe.

What’s done is done, though, and regaining his focus for game 6 and trusting in the fact that the organization has its full confidence in him will enable Jonnie to get his groove back for game 6. I hope…

It's a team game, but...

I gotta speak here. Seriously frustrated, with many facets, both on and off ice.
(1) We have been seriously let down by the supposed veterans on our team in the last two games. We had a chance, a late second period lead, to go up 3-1 in this series. Sean O’Donnell literally not just coasted but SLOWED DOWN approaching the bench WITH THE PUCK, and then was pick-pocketed instead of gettting it deep and SAFE. Result? Goal by Demitra. Tie game. Kopi scored giving us the lead back, yeah I know, but you cannot give away goals like that. simplest play in the book, skate and get it deep, don’t coast and screw your teammates on a bad change with the puck going the other way. And last night, O’donnell was god-fucking-awful. Late, slow, weak and far from his checks. His “revolving door” miss on the swipe at the puck next to the crease was terrifically stupid; don’t take the low percantager baseball swing, either get you entire leg/skate/stick on it, or take away the man standing next to you. And Smyth, what the fuck is he thinking? Extended shift yields goal, handcuffs teammates with blind pass to nobody up the ice, which then became Canucks breakout pass #1.
I could go an and on, I could make much more sense, I could work on my syntax. But I am probably expressing the same blind frustration most of the Kings feel being double-crossed by guys that do know better but still screw up anyway, after the rest of the team is playing their guts out, following a very disciplined system and paying the price physically in their own zone waiting for the goddamn scorers to score.
Paging Justin Williams- we have found your body, please report to the ham-and-bacon booth to match it back up with your mind and your hands. And by the way, whoever has been spraying silicone lube on his stick better cut it out, it ain’t funny anymore.
Dear Rich Clune-thanks for trying, but could you please stop giving the Canucks a huge laugh every time you run into one and do the brick-wall clown act where you fall on your ass and look up like a spoiled brat. I am gald you tried to fight Rypien, I am aware your shoulder was already hurt from that hit into the boards in game whatever, but dude you keep looking like a boy among men, and I have yet to see you stop the puck on the forecheck and contain it in their zone for more than 2 seconds.
This is a full blown rant, sorry but goddamn it we are better than that.
We beat these same pricks 8-3, and they put a 7 on us. Fine. Blowouts even at one apiece. It isn’t over, and I am not giving up. I am also not going to quietly sit by while we continue to squander advantages and play like fools.
We have a better game than they do, in total. We need each guy to beat the guy he is looking at. We need to stay within the WINNING system. We need to make a 4th line out of people that can simply hold the puck long enough to use up 1/2 a shift in their zone, then let the top 3 lines carry the play.
Enough of this bullshit respecting the Sedins. Hit them, repeatedly, make slower dumpins and stay close to the d-man as he chases the puck to the boards and then cream him into the glass legally. Make Mikael Samuelsson play a little defense, and somebody please knock him on his ass for once, he is not that geat a skater, he is a stand-still quick-shot artist, have the high forward come down on him and smoke him to the ice.
My fingers are now bleeding for the force I used to type this.
Next game, let’s use a simple formula: it is do-or-die, and somebody is gonna pay a price. Like the title says: THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Make it slightly green in tint, not purple, and I wll be happy.
They don’t have to win, they have to play well and show they learn. They have to try hard and be smart and give it everything. Next motherfucker that is seen coasting to the bench with the puck before a change needs to have someone box his ears when he sits down at the bench.
finally, Dear Luc-
drop the stupid “chat with Marty McSorley” bullshit. We are trying to forget him. He is, fair or not, singularly associated with the stick incident. He cost us the 2-0 series lead going home, period. We do not need to think about this idiot while we are finally back in the playoffs. I don’t care how much that asshole has done for us before or after, he is unavoidably connected, and irreversibly linked to the single worst moment in team history. What the hell are you thinking putting his name into the ether when we are trying to make a new name, a new image, a new culture? Wake the fuck up, this is old-school and is diametrically opposed to the progressive mindset needed. Same thing with Roenick and his effluvial spew. Screw those guys, they are old news, old bad news, old bad tired and stupid news and both of these clowns were guilty of BETRAYAL to the team and the organization.
Don’t presume you can use me to rehabilitate the two worst public images from the past; I am buying tickets to see this NEW group become soemthing, in spite of the traitors that have burned me in the paast, and LUC YOU NEED TO LEARN THAT THIS HAS TO BE A NEW ERA TO SUCCEED.
More later, kisses.

Dude.

This is no golf clap….but a full blown standing O’.

What an EPIC rant.

Way to go… You could just change the colors, and a few player’s names, and have every frustrated fan use this as a template.

Simply epic.

Samuelsson carries a Swedish passport, but Henrik thinks of his fellow countryman as quasi-Canadian. He plays with an edge and has lots to say to opponents on the ice.

"People in here love him," Henrik said. "He's almost Canadian with the way he likes to chirp and go back and forth." B. Ziemer/Van. Sun 4/22/10

You took the words out of my mouth...

I wanted to say the same things, only hesitated since i have not been posting long and really could piece my frustration together until 6am and then it wasnt everything i hoped it would be. I agree with everything you say here, especially the link to the “single worst momment in Kings history!”
Well said my freind, well said.
I tried to be the Yin and i knew it was only a matter of time before the Yang showed up…you did show up with a full frontal slap in the face just for shits and gigs dont fuck me over its been too long attitude that i was expecting from my Yang!
Now that its out of your sytem and the minds of the rest of us…lets focus our positive energy on our boys for Sunday…and continue to make voodoo dolls made out of my little sisters Barbie collection for the sedin’s and samuelson, then periodically stabbing or burning them with the hope that it will have even the slightest outcome on game 6 and eventually game 7!
Peace out Yall-its chicken Tacos lunch time!!!

Agreed. But I still like Marty, even if he did stomp on heart in ’93.

Enjoying the comments from the other side and it’s good to learn some of the insights to Kings players and the neuroses some players seem to give all home team fans. I think TM putting Quick back in may be the end of the Kings, unfortunately for you all. Great discussions here and a great series.

All of us in Vancouver are extremely jealous of your future Norris trophy winner after having watched him for 2 weeks during the Olympics and through this series. Cheers to all, looking forward to an entertaining game 6.

Anybody take a peek over at hockeybuzz to read Dancing Boy’s rants for today? Comedic gold. Recommended for anyone who needs a good laugh!

One thing to remember...

…You can only lose (and win) one game at a time. Game six is starting 0-0. As a Canucklehead, one of the funniest moments to me was when the fans cheered a successful penalty kill early in the game as if we just got the damn Cup. Unironically, too.

Yeah, we’re a little desperate for glory at this point. See you Sunday!
