Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Bernier

Hi Kings fans, it's a Flyers fan here. Now despite being led to the Stanley Cup Finals by a combination of Brian Boucher and Michael Leighton, and despite there being some debate as to whether Leighton is to blame for our eventual loss, we are unanimous in saying that Leighton is not the 'solution' to the big hole in goal we've had since 1987.

So naturally we look around for other possible solutions. We've got a lot of goalies in our system, but no-one has put their hand up and said that they're going to be our star of the future. There are some established goalies elsewhere, but they would be coming at a big price.

But how about the incredibly hyped AHL-star young goalies who just can't find a starting spot on their own teams? How set are the Kings and Kings fans on Jonathan Quick being the guy for the future? What are you going to do with Bernier? And what do you think you could get for him if he were traded? It would be interesting to get some possible trade scenarios happening. Right now, there's a lot of fans who think Jeff Carter might end up leaving the Flyers some time in the future (this is just fan talk though). Because a lot of our other forwards (Richards, Giroux, JVR, Leino, Briere) are near untouchable right now, maybe we could start some hypotheticals there.

Some have suggested Carter to the Kings for Bernier and Simmonds. I know you're pretty high on Simmonds, so is this a possibility? How about Carter to the Kings for Bernier and Hickey and possibly a pick?

Don't hold your breath

Unless you know how to hold it for two years.

I would be astounded if either Quick or Bernier were traded this summer. The plan is to let Bernier and Quick compete in training camp for playing time, and then spend the next two years or so getting a good look at both. The Kings have them both under contract for the next three years, so there is no hurry to trade one or the other, unless one reveals himself as an obvious bust.

If Philly would be interested in Erik Ersberg, OTOH, then Lombardi will take the call.

Hickey + Simmonds + a pick for Carter? I suggest you buy earplugs if you don’t like the sound of derisive laughter.

haha yeah I really would be shocked if the Kings parted with Simmonds at all really, but just wanted to gauge the opinion out west.

I guess our reasoning for a possible show of interest in the Kings was that you guys need to give raises to Simmonds, Williams, Doughty, Jack Johnson along with Bernier at the end of next season. It would be impossible to add another 5 million dollar centre like Carter after that is all done. So you might have been interested in moving your talented backup and getting a piece that could enable you to go on a bit of a run for the cup the next season.

Yeah I think Ersberg doesn’t exactly fit the ‘solution’ card.

Thanks for posting Pursuit. Welcome, welcome, welcome.

Both trades you proposed would never fly, sorry to say. Bernier is your prime untouchable player and Simmonds is not someone the Kings will easily give up. He’s also an unbelievable fan favorite here. Both those players for Carter? Did you mean Carter, Giroux, and a pick? Just putting Carter out there wouldn’t get you much in terms of young players from the Kings roster. Also, I don’t think anyone is referring to Bernier as the Kings backup on this side of the coast. At least I hope not.

Yeah

I dont think its likely to happen as I think everybody is pretty high on Bernier and Quick. Whats better than two possible #1 caliber goalies competing? Simmonds is def great player but I dont think he is going anywhere too soon. We are pretty stoked with our young guns.

By the way, great run by the Flyers. I think if they had just a little more solid of a GK you could have done it. Always next year, right….? Philly is my adopted city ( I grew up watching the Eagles as a kid) and kind of adopted all the other Philly teams, after LA of course. Glad you could join us over here.

Now that I think about it

The heart of the matter is that if you want to trade with the Kings this summer, you have to look at what they have in surplus, and that’s D prospects and draft picks. They’re solid up the middle with Kopitar, Stoll, Handzus and possibly Schenn, but not quite as well stocked on the wings, especially if Frolov walks. So for that reason alone, Simmonds will be untouchable.

Plus, Carter’s a C, is he not? And he doesn’t come cheap.

So I would say that if you want to start trade talks (about anyone) with Dean Lombardi, Hickey + a pick might get him to return your call. But not Simmonds + anything else.

Aah ok

Yes part of our problem is that we have too many centers. The playoffs have shown us that we should keep the centers as Richards, Briere, Giroux and Betts. So that leaves Carter on the wing, a position which reports suggest he is unhappy to play. Thanks for the information anyway.

Great freaking screen name, by the way. I wish the Kings still had Lappy. That guy was fearless! If you are perusing the interwebs and trying to find a young goalie who could be a trade target for the Flyers, how about Cory Schneider of the Canucks?

and on the 93rd postseason of the National Hockey League, the Slovakian-hockeygod Zeus commanded from high atop Mount Figueroa..."RELEASE THE MEAT TRAIN!" And it was good.

Been discussed as well, the only thing is that there are some connections between our 2 front offices that made it seem like this may be a bit more likely. I’d take either one.

Bernier is Dean Lombardi's poster child

Dean was quoted saying that after 4 years of rebuild, and asking the fans to be patient, Bernier is the first pure rebuild guy to come to fruition. I don’t think he would ever let him go, especially since we haven’t had a solid goaltender since Moses was in survival training classes.

End Corporate Personhood.

I thought Quick was good this year, no? I’d take him over Leighton, Boucher and the 5 other Goalies we used this year.

Quick was pretty good, yes

But Bernier may turn out to be better. Or not. But quite possibly he will be better than Quick. In the long run.

That’s exactly why Lombardi wants to get a good, long look at both. And since they’re both under contract for another 3 years, I figure it will probably be 2 years before one or the other is traded.

BTW, how much of a surprise was it that that your guys made it to the Finals with Leighton as starting goalie? What is the conventional wisdom about him right now? Were the playoffs a fluke for him, or might he be better than everyone thought?

by DougX on Jun 16, 2010 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with Bernier possibly being better, just seemed like Quick was being put down there when I think he is a legitimately good goalie with a chance to be great.

Honestly Doug, the playoffs weren’t a fluke at all for Leighton. He didn’t do anything impressive really. His numbers look great and what not, but one of his shutouts Montreal had like 4 scoring chances on 16 shots or something straight ridiculous. He made basic saves that you or I could make, but Chris Pronger went Hecules, and Kimmo Timonen is a legitimate #1 D-man on most teams. I’ve never seen a Flyers blue line anything like what our top 4 did, it was insane.

Once we ran into Chicago and he actually had to make difficult saves, well…. You saw what happened haha. Some want him to stay as a back-up(which is tough because Boucher is already under contract and Leights isn’t), a few think he is the answer(Major minority here) and most want a goalie. Like we all have. For 20 freaking years.

It’s a bummer for Philly that Holmgren couldn’t have pulled off a trade for Halak. St. Louis seems to have given up not very much at all to get him today.

Yeah, we depleted our farm system to get Pronger. We have no 2nd tier or 1A prospects, just 2 untouchables and a bunch of nobodies.

I agree with Ed Van Chimp

We’re not giving up Giroux or JVR, and we don’t have any other former 1st round selections in our farm system. Our top prospects are two or three defenders picked in the later rounds of the draft who probably have a ceiling of 2nd pairing but still need a lot of time to develop.

But I also think we lack the cap space to give Halak the money he might get from St. Louis. However, given how little they gave up for Halak, we might have to wait and see what his conract ends up as.

The Halak trade does have some implications on the value of young goaltenders in the league. It seems that teams aren’t willing to give up that much to acquire a potential franchise goaltender. Which isn’t really good news for teams like LA that have two great young goalies they will eventually need to choose between.

by PursuitOfLappyness on Jun 17, 2010 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Ditto Ersberg

Erik Ersberg is the LA goalie likely to be traded this summer. But yeah, the Halak deal offers even less hope that a competent, but hardly spectacular backup goalie, will get much in return.

Another Flyer guy here. I am just wondering if the Dustin Brown trade rumors were still Flying around or if they ever were. Also I am still rocking my Flyers Handzus jersey go Zeus.

by chrislanci on Jun 13, 2010 8:22 AM PDT reply actions

Not lately

I haven’t heard anyone speculate that Brown will be traded, and given that he’s the captain (i.e. growing into a leadership position), I just don’t think it will happen.

And yes, Zeus totally rocks. We like Zeus. Nice to hear that he’s still remembered kindly in Philly.
