Ladd to Atlanta? Well, I called that one, didn't I?

And it didn't even take 24 hours. So by my math, dump Huet in the AHL and Chicago is under the cap. And all they had to get rid of was:

Ebbett plays for Minnesota

He hasn’t been a ’Hawk for months now.

Also, Davis and Brophey were both qualified, as was Skille (who figures to be an NHL regular next year); Jordan Hendry is the notable non-qualified RFA.

Neither is Barker

But the point is, can you honestly say that neither of them would have been dealt with as they were if it had not been for the Hawks’ cap problem?

Oh yeah

This is an outdated roster… Aliu was shipped to Atlanta, too.

Are you talking about Ebbett and Barker? I forget how the former left (I don’t think it was part of the trade), but Barker wasn’t just about a salary dump (it helped that Johnsson was a UFA though). He was expected to play top-4 role on a team that had a set top 4, and he wasn’t able to bring enough defensively or help out in the PP QB role that he had done a pretty good job of the year before.

Or if you were talking about Ladd, then yes, he is a cap casualty. RIP. Best of luck in Atlanta!

Ebbett was waived to avoid a tagging violation. Barker was dumped for cap space in 2010-11.

Wait till this year.

My point was

They could’ve stood pat and hung onto Barker for the Cup run if they wanted. They decided he was expendable so they made that trade (and imagine if Johnsson didn’t get hurt — the depth on D would’ve been delicious). It just would’ve been another piece to move this offseason.

I know where Ebbett plays. I also know that he was waived in order to make tagging room for the Kane, Toews, Keith deals

and therefore counts as (in fact, the first) cap casualty. Barker being the second.

I also know that the RFAs were qualified. That doesn’t matter because they can’t afford to pay them. They need cheaper people than that. So if you insist on not counting them among the walking dead, you have to find some room somewhere else. Maybe you’ll let Niemi or Hjalmarsson go? I doubt it. Every time you go with a player who makes $900K instead of $700K, that’s another player who gets squeezed out.

Actually, I haven’t checked, but it’s possible the RFAs you mentioned could be signed and buried in the minors. You just couldn’t bring them up. Fun times.

Wait till this year.

Yeah they haven't been mentioned in conversations about the big league team

I definitely see them as fixtures in the minors for the whole year.

Skille is tricky because like you say, he costs a bit more and costs us flexibility with the other forward positions. We let Hendry become a UFA because we didn’t want to give him a raise.

my main point is, the Hawks are substantially out of the woods

there will be a big Huet dump and some minor shifting around of prospects, and some cheapo acquisitions presumably, but nothing drastic

Wait till this year.
