What the Islanders Fans are Thinking

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 25: Actor Kevin Connolly talks with New York Islanders owner Charles Wang during the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at Staples Center on June 25, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Here's a little window into Islander-land, as they descend into Kovalchuk mania while simultaneously trying to figure out if they are Charlie Brown and the world is Lucy with the football. Everything below is snipped from the comments section of this post -- THE ILYA KOVALCHUK/ISLANDERS LIVE BLOGMight as well keep running tab of the adventure · islanderspointblank.com -- which is worth reading in and of itself. This is not all the comments, just some highlights, with my comments in bold brackets. Now, let's begin:

Devon

ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod THIS WOULD BE EPIC

6

Pete

There is no better piece to the rebuild than kovy for so many reasons.

[Quisp note: Did you hear that, Kovy? REBUILD!]

9

jeff

I have been saying this all along, go get Ilya and the league will have to listen to us.

10

Brian

I really hope the Islanders are not being played here to drive up Kovalchuk’s price tag to the Kings or Devils.

11

matt

PLEASE SIGN HIM OMG I WOULD CRY

12

Matt

its negotiating 101
the isles are perfect pawns
the kings failed to sign dman
they need kovy
the agent just needs to make the kings think kovy would consider nyi
it looks like their beat writer bit. I doubt Lombardi will

[Quisp note: Helene Elliott covered the Islanders before she covered the Kings. I don't think this is meaningful, just interesting.]

18

WEHM Anthony

I been saying this for the longest time, and everyone was calling me crazy… It just makes too much sense, We have all the cap space… He’s 27 and still young!!! This would up ticket sales and make us legit!

19

dman

that would have no impact on the lighthouse… that’s ridiculous… you really think john candy’s twin brother is looking at all of this or cares? no way!

22

Jim

This is just cruel torture. Ilya would be an awesome fit but don’t you think he’s had enough "playing for a rebuilding team".

25

Devon

You think Garth Snow would let himself get played? [...] He wants to get our fanbase riled up, because something awesome is going to happen.

30

Paul

Dreger just tweeted that the offer is 10 years, 10 million a year

41

doc

He could single handedly fast-forward the rebuild 2 years and save the Islanders along with the prospects that they have…!

44

Teller

10mil12years plus lighthouse revenue sharing let’s go Garth [Quisp note: can't have revenue sharing, per CBA]

48

Lee

Frolov-Tavares-Kovalchuk ::drools::

[Quisp note: Frolov!]

51

steve from CT

If I’m dreaming, please don’t wake me!!!!

52

Jack

Pull your head out Wang and Snow, sign this guy before the Kings do, they have a better team so act fast you dundrheads

58

Dave

They better not give him a 10 year deal… They will destory their cap room when they have to sign our own guys down the line… I would love to get Kovy as much as the next guy, but this has Yashin written all over it… 100 Million! No Thanks… Anything over 5-6 years is just not worth it…

59

Marc

He’s a great player, no doubt, but look what happened with the two 10+ year contracts Wang handed out. Both Yashin & DiPietro’s contract length was questioned by many when signed. [...] Isn’t the max a player can earn = 20% of the cap max = approximately $12m? [Quisp note: yes, $11.8MM] With a potential signing like this, will the Isles have cap problems once the young players are up for long-term deals?

61

Ari From Long Island

Kovy + Souray = ISLANDERS RULE!!!!!! [Quisp note: I'm speechless.]

63

Andrew

Which of our RFAs do we let go of because we have Kovalchuk taking up 10% of the cap. [Quisp note: 20%] Not even Crosby, Malkin, or Ovechkin make $10M a year. Ugh.[...]Just have a bad feeling about signing a one-dimensional player who is looking for nothing more than a big pay check and hasn’t helped any team he’s been part of win anything.

68

Devon

There is no such thing as too much money when it comes to a player like Kovy, who instantly a) gives credibility to this team b) puts butts in the seats and c) in conjunction with a and b, means we’re closer to staying on Long Island.[Quisp note: yes, Kovy, good idea to sign with a team that may leave town, that has "contender" written all over it.]

75

Lafars

At least no one is making jokes at our expense. Way to be relevant.

89

Bard

We’re now signing players just because we think it might get the Lighthouse Project approved? That’s not how you build a team. Snow’s been slow and steady in his rebuild, no reason to stop it now.

97

joe

believe me or not but a person in front office says its 100 [%] done. [Quisp note: ha?]

99

Mike from Philly

I would have to assume it would be $10 Million for the first few years, then decreases towards the end of the deal. [Quisp note: no, anybody can do that.]

101

jaymz27

Please Mr. Wang!!!!!!! Make us relevant again!!!!!

104

jon

you can’t sign kovy for 10 years 10 mill and expect to keep kyle & tavares around after 5 years.

106

ny711ot

holy crap!!!!whatever it takes….forgegt about that rebuilding bs….money talks and kovy wants to be in the nhl….

108

DC23

Not to get off track, but has anyone else heard that Frolov is on his way to check out Long Island?

110

isle in NYC

It makes sense for the Isles but I think we are just being used as a pawn for them to get more money out of LA. This whole process its looked like LA and maybe LA tried to pull back some money knowing this and they are just trying to get the dollars up.

117

Isles99

Any chance we sign Kovy…Trade Rolli back to the Oil for Souray and sign Nabakov to a 3 year 12 million dollar contract.. Then I think we can squeak into the eight spot!

[Quisp  note: I don't think there's ever been a team that went from the cap floor to the cap ceiling in one day.]

132

Anthony

OMG… I’m almost touching myself LOL

To Nut & all my other San Diego based Kings fans...

in the above picture, doesn’t it actually look like Charles Wang is discussing NHL draft strategy with Sam the Cooking Guy?

I really hope Kovi signs with the Isles

So we can have the money to re-sign all our key RFA’s for next season. Then we can claim Sourway from Edmonton and swap Gagne for Quick. I’m also just putting this out, how about signing Maxim Afinogenov for a 2-year, 3,5 mil?

by The Ram on Jul 3, 2010 10:09 AM PDT reply actions

Looking Back

IK should have been offered a July 1, 9AM EST signing deadline, period. Why? Because it’s beginning to appear he is played/playing DL for the fool.

I recall the off season goal was shoring core with a few talented FAs. Instead market day has come and gone while next season will feature a slew of young players (brought up to insure there was room for a pompous winger). Unless some standouts emerge this could be a long season.

In hindsight Kovalchuk is a brilliant manipulator and businessman who eats tough as nails GMs for breakfast and set our building (and cap) process back a year.

That’s one year of wasted cap space that was used to insure the core of this team stays together long enough to contend. How exciting is that Kings fans?

Kovy isn't playing anyone

any idiot can get $100MM out of the Islanders. For the Kings, he’ll either take the offer or he won’t. It’s pointless to “shop” an offer of $7-8MM or whatever Lombardi is offering, since it’s not going to change the offer, and it’s certainly not going to affect Lamoriello. Kovy isn’t going to trick either of those guys into overpaying. and if he signs with the islanders, who are rebuilding, who might move, whose owner talks about selling the team, and are still paying multiple millions for several years on the buyout of their last russian mega deal…I’m not sure how “brilliant” that is.

Wait till this year.

by Quisp on Jul 3, 2010 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, he's certainly doing a fine job of masking it

If he really wanted to play for a cup contending team, he would’ve signed with us by now. He just wants to milk the Kings for as much MONEY as he can get. If he DOES sign with that KHL team, I say “Don’t let the door slam HARD on your ass on the way out of the NHL!”

by The Ram on Jul 3, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

thats the point though, if this is playing out how it seems to be playing out, he’s not fooling anybody but himself. DL most likely already put his best offer out there, which isn’t enough for kovalchuk, so kovi’s waiting. Either he’s waiting for a team to put out a big offer meant to get the kings to match it (islanders), or maybe he’s serious about taking a big offer from a team with a horrible record. If he’s waiting for the kings to make a better offer, it’s most likely futile.
