Moulson, 1 year, $2.45MM
Moulson and Islanders Avoid Arbitration - Craig Custance - The Grinder - Sporting News
An NHL source tells Sporting News that Islanders forward Matt Moulson agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.45 million before this morning’s arbitration hearing. Yesterday, it was Mason Raymond and the Canucks getting a last-minute deal finalized before the hearing. Moulson had a breakout season last year after joining the Islanders, scoring 30 goals in 82 games after scoring a total of just six goals in 29 career games with the Los Angeles Kings.
Good news for our old friend Matt Moulson, who got his deal and totally messed up my points-per-dollar chart of several months ago. Back in January, Moulson topped the chart (which sampled from high and low salaries around the league) with the lowest total of $10,956 per point. Zach Parise was the highest value millionaire, at $38,109 per point. Alex Ovechkin: $76K/pt. Chris Drury was at the bottom of my sample, at $210K/pt.
I take a take* some pleasure from this, since prior to last season I took a lot of heat for my faith in Moulson's goal-scoring abilities. The only other blogger I remember agreeing with me was Connie, years before this site existed, of course. So, yay for us.
Of course, to be as good a value this season, Moulson will have to tally...um...225 points. Besides that Gretzky guy, no-one's ever done that, though Mario got 199 once.
*what the **** kind of typo is that? I sound like Foghorn Leghorn.

I hope during the season the Islanders wrap him up long term.
I also hope your math is right, 225 points would give him 3 more points then the Isles had goals last season.

you know whats funny, I just commented on LHH that I hope the Islanders sign him to a long term deal during the season and added a note saying long term as in 3 or 4 years, not 20 something.
10 year deals almost seem sane with the 17 year monster looming.

If it’s a young, franchise player, 10 years can be sane. My example for that would be the Mike Richards contract. 12 years, $5.75m cap hit, ending when he’s in his mid-30s. It looked crazy at the time, but he’s a top-line center for the foreseeable future, the cap was expected to keep increasing, since revenues kept going up and the NHLPA wasn’t going to vote against cap increases, and by the end of that timeframe it would be a small portion of the cap. It’s a gamble, but not significantly moreso than other contracts. Where it starts looking nuts to me is when you offer 10+ years to a guy who’s already 30. Even with all the conditioning we have now, the odds of a player still being productive at 40 are low. If a guy’s 25 or younger, and will almost certainly be a franchise-level player, getting him for 10 years could make sense to me.
Honor is no substitute for victory.
But even if Moulson has another great year, I’d still be hesitant to sign a 10 year deal.

I’m happy for Matty Mo’. It’s good to see him produce on the opportunity he was given on the Isles and also to see him get a well deserved raise.
Lock him up, Wang!!!
