LeBrun: It's Down to Isles and Devils - Kings Have Moved On

Ilya Kovalchuk nearing decision on 2010-11 season - ESPN New York
Grossman's update came after tweeting Monday morning that this was the day Kovalchuk would make his decision. Kovalchuk's options have been narrowed down to the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders or SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL. Earlier Monday, the New York Post reported the Devils were on the verge of signing Kovalchuk to a six-year, $60 million deal but several calls by ESPN.com to Grossman, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and Islanders GM Garth Snow were not returned. KHL president Alexander Medvedev, via a spokesman, declined to comment, as well. The Los Angeles Kings pulled out of the race Sunday and a source said Monday night that under no circumstance would they get back into talks about the free-agent forward at this point. They have "completely moved on," the source said.

Okay, fine. ABC calls Florida for Gore. I've heard enough. LeBrun is normally very reliable. I'm willing to go with it at this point and just assume if it looks, smells and feels like something, it is that something.

Fine with me

I find it hard to believe he’d get a better deal somewhere else: yes he could play on the Islanders and get more money, but then you’re on the Islanders. It’s possible, but I also find it hard to believe the Devils could outbid the Kings, and if they did, but I significant margin, I fear for what that monster cap hit is going to do to the team.

When push comes to shove, you're afraid of love

Ilya has (just about officially) enjoyed his 15 minutes — if not 15 days — of fame in the eyes of Kings fans. Cowabunga, we hardly knew ya, dude!

But seriously… Good riddance, #17. If you’re somehow lucky enough to get your name on the Cup, more power to you. Otherwise, please take your fat wallet and go quietly to join the ranks of the HAVE NOTS.

I have no idea whose names will fill DL’s boxes when we — fingers crossed — arrive at the pot of gold, but I wonder if any of us will even remember these early days of July ’10 when that time arrives.

Tomorrow is a another day.
