I’m OK with losing Kovy if it means I get Fro back. Willie Mitchell would be icing on the cake.

What about Andy Sutton?
I don’t know much about him, but I have a vague since of a nasty shot-blocking giant.
Wait till this year.
I’m in complete agreement with RK here. Give us back Fro and bring Willie to the Kings. The Kings’ offense doesn’t decline but their defense would improve greatly.

I Want You Back, by the Rudy 5
When we had him to ourselves
Dean didn’t want him around
That oddly smiling post-goof face
Would look better with a frown
But someone grabbed Ilya from the bunch
Too much cash was all it took
Now it’s prolly much too late
But Fro rates a second look
Oooo, baby, give us one more chance!
(show you that I love you)
Won’t you please let meeee
back in your heart!
Oh, darling, I just can’t let you go
Without a Russkie
RK can’t live
anymoooore.
Aww yeah.

I remember Matt Ellis a couple years ago was good for the Kings. Can’t remember if he was a top 6 D though.
Matt Ellis was a forward, not a D, who was picked up by the Kings from Detroit through waivers. Ellis was an “energy” player who is best suited to be a 3rd or 4th line forward at best.

Here's an Idea
How about Maxim Afinogenov. He’s still available and he had 24 goals, 37 assist last season for Atlanta in which he earned 0.8mil. I say we give him a 2 year, 4MM. He’s a right winger, but maybe he wouldn’t mind switching to left wing?
I don’t think Maxim’s as good of a player as Frolov.

Oh, for sure!
I’m already thinking about it. I might make a flight to CO to see the Kings and Avs and then fly on to Chicago to see the Kings play the ‘Hawks on the Wednesday of that week, and then fly back home. I’ll keep you posted on my plans!

I know he's old, but...
I think Paul Kariya can serve as a sniper this year. Bring Fro back too, along with Belanger and we’re in business.
I forgot about Kariya. That’s not a bad idea, Waves. Bring back Fro, let Kariya come back to SoCal as a King to torture the Duck “fans,” and sign Willie Mitchell instead of Belanger.
I love Belanger, but the Kings have more than enough depth at center. Another shutdown defenseman such as Mitchell would be much more valuable to the Kings as opposed to signing another center.

Definitely get a Dman...
and also Belanger. I’m not convinced by a long shot that Schenn will make the club so we really don’t have a solid 4th center as of yet. Richie can fill that role, but he’s better on the wing.
NO WAY!
1. His numbers have been declining the past couple of years.
2. He’s injury prone
3. He cost WAY too much. He earn 6MM from st. Louis last season and I don’t think he would take a BIG pay cut, around 2years, 5MM.
WAY
No doubt his numbers do not warrant 6 million. Not even close. But I do think it’s possible and not totally out of the question. How about 4 mil? 4.5? I do think he’d help the team though.
Trade
I still wouldn’t rule out a trade. We have the assets to make a move. Defensively I would like to see Willie Mitchell as a bridge player until more young D are ready for the NHL and on offense, I think a trade is more likely since there really aren’t that many other good forwards in the FA market after IK besides Fro. Maybe try to swing a trade for Bobby Ryan? Iginla(except I think Sutter’s idea of getting him help was to sign Jokinen again…wonder what Iginla thinks about that haha)?
Yes, and DL has been preparing us for that
I recall that his recent public statements have been more about looking for trades than relying on the UFA market.
whoops
I chose to just read it as “Plan B” haha
I don’t think we can re-sign Frolov without giving him what he wants. The next available LW would be Ponikarovsky. The Kings should sign him to a 2 year, 6MM.
I would rather overpay for Fro than risk bringing in Poni.

I doubt that Frolov will get much of a raise based on last year
$2.9MM is the old cap hit…so…$3.75MM is just right. Two years. Maybe even one.
Wait till this year.
I like
I just wonder whether the silence from and about Fro’s camp is waiting for Kovalchuk to be the first domino to fall, or whether he really hasn’t gotten any interest from anyone.
Poor Fro. He always did say he wanted to stay here. I liked that about him.
The detractors can say all they want about him, and criticism is certainly fair; but we never overpaid for a single year on that contract, IMO. I think we got a damn good deal.

I absolutely believe that everyone, GMs and Frolov and agent(s)
are waiting for Kovalchuk to be off the market, at which point Fro will be very popular. In fact, now that I think about it, if Lombardi weren’t still interested in Kovalchuk, it would make sense to make a Fro (or Poni, or whoever) deal now, because after the IK deal, everyone’s price goes up.
Wait till this year.
Which is why
Fro’s agent will push to wait. As soon as Kovi signs, he can tout the top winger. Then we can wait another week watching rumor after rumor about where Fro will go. At least I’m not totally bored this summer!
Poni = Stone Hands
Believe me, you don’t want Ponikarovsky. He couldn’t finish a play to save his life. The fact that he couldn’t score on a line with Malkin should tell you something.
Sign Willie Mitchell, try to swap Stoll+ for a winger.

Shore up the D
I say Mitchell to shore up O’Donnell’s spot and get some veteran shut down help.
Here's another one of my CRAZY ideas
Instead of Willie Mitchell, how about bringing back Joe Corvo. I think his number are better than Mitchell’s numbers plus he’s cheaper too.
Corvo might have better numbers than Willie, but Mitchell is a shutdown defenseman, ala Mattias Nordstrom or Aaron Miller. You don’t bring in guys like Mitchell to put up big offensive numbers for your team, you have guys like Willie Mitchell to reduce the big offensive numbers put up by your opponents.

by DodgerBlueBalls on Jul 6, 2010 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions
And a shutdown guy is more needed right now
The Kings’ D prospects lean more toward the puck-moving type. So I don’t think they need to spend money on Corvo. A Corvo-type guy, someone now in Manchester can probably step up and do that job. A Mitchell-type guy, they’ll probably have to bring in someone from the outside.
You guys DO have a point, but...
If the Kings can get Mitchell for 3MM per year, at most, then I’ll be fine with it. Otherwise, we can get Corvo for 2.5MM per year.
I hate to be negative, here, because I really hope he works out, but what about the health concerns? Would Vancouver have let their best defenseman go if he were really okay? Or did they just decide they couldn’t wait to find out, and passing up on an FA like Hamhuis was too big of a gamble? Aargh.
In Dinglebarn We Trust
You’re exactly right, Niesy. If such a capable shutdown defenseman as Mitchell were 100% healthy, why wouldn’t he have been signed by now? Especially considering that Willie was already playing for his hometown team? Aaaaargh^2!!!!!!!!

Always a concern, but two things
(1) I do think that Lombardi and co have an evaluation process in place; they don’t just say “hey CONCUSSIONS! Front of the line!”
(2) Mitchell would be at a discount and would be replacing O’Donnell (third pairing). Paying him a lot or expecting him to be a second pairing guy would be a mistake.
Wait till this year.
I’m sure we would vet the concussions issue, I’m just wondering if we’re getting our hopes up before that happens. Limited role on the third pairing works for me. Nothing would please me more than for him to be healthy and for Vancouver to regret what they’ve done.
Still wish we had OD, though. Dinglebarn.

Bonk on head no good
My only reservation about Mitchell is that the Kings have had not-so-good luck with players coming back from concussions. But if he can be had at the right price, obviously that mitigates some of the risk.
