Helene Elliott: Kings Suddenly More Attractive
Kings and Ilya Kovalchuk are 're-engaged' | The Fabulous Forum | Los Angeles Times
His side is supposed to deliver a counterproposal to the Kings on Wednesday. It still might not work for the Kings because they are concerned about the average annual value and a ripple effect -- mostly with what kind of jumping-off point a big deal for Kovalchuk will create for Drew Doughty, who has one season left on his entry-level deal. Stay tuned. This gets stranger by the minute.

Or maybe....
Helene is just trying to save face(no pun intended), since it’s obvious that she is aware of this blog or realized how badly she came off of her last article.
Nah. It rings true to me. I don't think she's been wrong, just quietly biased in the usual way, which leads to a certain amount of hyperbole.
Wait till this year.
It’s just a bit weird — she’ll borrow trouble by imagining a series of first round exits and all our young talent fleeing in disgust as a result of failing to sign free agents; but she won’t dwell so much on all the negative consequences that would result if we were to nab Kovy at the wrong price.
Sigh. Oh well. She was never this negative in the old days. I have to admit that covering the Kings for this long would ingrain a certain amount of pessimism.

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.
Biased much? Axe to grind?
(I had posted this comment in the thread about her other article, but that’s getting buried at this point)
Now that she reported that the Kings are back in talks with Kovy, her whole other article (about how the Kings were just not able to attract FA in general) might end up being an epic overreaction.
Meanwhile, in the Twittosphere, Lebrun gave props to DL with "If Kovalchuk does sign in LA, it was a strong poker play by Lombardi to break it off and have player come back to him….".
Helene was quick to reply "or a bad play by his side in overestimating what he could get on the market. " She sure wouldn’t want to give any sort of credit to DL… I haven’t seen fair and balanced reporting like that since the last time I watched FoxNews!
No, no, no, no, no, no, no

I don't get this point of view.
Why don’t you like him? I can understand not wanting him at the wrong number. But the guy is worth a 6.5 or 7.5mil cap hit. I don’t understand what the hate is assuming he doesn’t blow your cap out of the water.

It’s not that I don’t like him and I certainly don’t hate him, it’s that I think he’s the wrong guy for the Kings. “No, no, no, no, no, no, no…”: it would be a mistake to sign him. He’s an incomplete player: tons of natural goal-scoring talent but doesn’t play a complete game. If you sign him as your marquee player, what are you telling your team? You could say, “You’re telling them you’ll go out and get the guy who can score the goals to advance in the playoffs.” and that would be true as far as it goes, but haven’t we just seen how a team that got into the playoffs on a shootout goal in the last game of the season completely shutdown the division leader (tied for 5th overall) icing the #11 and #16 scorers in the league, backed by arguably one of the best goalies the NHL has ever seen? Beat them 4 games to 1. Won three games in NJ, shut them out in the series-clincher on their home ice. Brian Boucher in goal. Ilya Kovalchuk (#11), Zach Parise (#16), Patrik Elias, Travis Zajac and Jamie Langenbrunner combined for 4 goals and 17 points in five games against the Flyers. The Devils power-play finished with a miserable four goals on 32 chances (12.5 percent), an average of 7 PP/game. The Flyers beat them in every aspect of the game at both ends of the rink. That’s what’s needed, two-way players playing in all three zones. Kovalchuk doesn’t do that. Will he? Maybe. You never know. But he’s played 621 games over 8 full seasons and I haven’t seen it yet. In my opinion he’s not what the Kings need. Great O talent, but…
