(POLL) Mt. Suckmore, Kings Edition

Battle of California asks that we contemplate nominees for our own team's Mt. Suckmore. Meg defines the nominating criteria:

These are the four players (or coaches or GMs or whatever) that, when you think of your favorite team, just fucking drive you out of your mind. The guys that you couldn't stand even when they wore your team's jersey, or players you are embarrassed to have once cheered on. Coaches who stayed long past their expiration date or GMs that couldn't make a good deal to save their lives. The blotches on your team's past roster that embarrass you whenever they are mentioned.

Sounds like a poll to me. If you have a write-in candidate, leave it in the comments (and don't vote yet, so that when I add your suggestion to the poll, you will be able to vote for it).

I resent that!!!

I really liked him as a king. Yeah I know he’s a goon but he’s the kind of goon you want on your team instead of meeting him face to face on the ice. His type of attitude on the ice was what they needed. off the ice is what people hate, but I it’s entertaining to me.

True, the Brownie lisp incident, Re: Avery...

A highlight in a lost season. First two games looked good, then two goalies out and the excellent Kings (lack of) conditioning program kicks in resulting in a record number of games lost to injury.

Don’t blame YF! Not his fault; he never said he was great or even good, or anything really, but certainly did his best. Wow. Grahame really was crap.

Certainly worthy of a spot, but ahead of whom, Crawford or Cloutier?

It saddens me greatly that the Kings have been so pathetic over the years that Cloutier no longer makes my Mt. Suckmore :(

It’s not Grahame’s fault he got traded for the pick that turned into Ray Bourque, but he certainly is responsible for his 4.19 & 4.21 GAA in his two seasons with the Kings’ OrganIzation (after leading the Bruins to the Finals the year before). Blech.

Classic Berg Moment

I remember watching him backing into the zone as a guy was coming at him. The forward faked going outside and Aki started crossing over towards the boards. The forward then goes to the inside and Aki keeps crossing over and back peddling right into the corner as the guy goes in on net. It was hilarious.

Another moment like that that I remember was Dan Bylsma falling down on a 2 on 1 with Gretzky as the sweet saucer pass was coming across to him.

Just a couple random moments that I’ll never forget…

by UpperV99 on Aug 3, 2010 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Stopped liking Gretz!??

Or stopped liking Berg?

I imagine that Wayne’s frustration wasn’t with Bylsma since we all know he was a man with limited skills and was totally out of his comfort zone playing with Gretz. You can’t blame Bylsma for that, and I don’t think Wayne did. I think that his frustration was probably with the coach (whoever it was at the time) and rightly so because it was so obvious that he shouldn’t have had Bylsma out there with Gretzky in the first place and it is annoying to have to learn the hard way.

That’s my take, but I love Gretzky and am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

How does Jaroslav Modry not make this list on the first draft? I realize there are lots of names, but that guy is probably only surpassed by Cloutier as worst King ever.

I realize he has a decent career after leaving here (and not terrible while here), but it’s not like Daryl Sydor was widely loved here. Steve Duschene is another not bad player who sucked here on more than one stint. Grant Fuhr too. None of those guys were fan favorites.

And no mention of Rick Knickle either?

Cloutier and Modry have to be my first two votes. After that there’s a lot of equivalent suck out there.

by Captain Material on Aug 4, 2010 10:07 AM PDT reply actions

Steve Duschene sucked in LA???

Are you kidding me? He averaged 58 points a season during his first 5 years with the Kings. As a defenseman, he scored at least 20 goals a season for three years in a row. His total +/- rating during his first 5 seasons on the Kings was +55!
I can’t believe someone seriously suggested #28 be nominated for Mt. Suckmore – that’s the kind of irrational {stuff} you’d expect to read over in the comments of Hammond’s blog, but not here.

Yeah, I would be happy right now to get the same Modry we let go or that played in Dallas.

He was another guy that got the bad rap and it just stuck for some reason. Duchesne, despite he very unfortunate name, went sour for me a season before he was let go. The guy put up points, but he constantly bailed out of hits and just gave the puck away. He turned into someone deserving the name “twinkletoes”, but even I still think it goes too far to say he sucked on more than one while he was in L.A.

End Corporate Personhood.

by Player-X on Aug 4, 2010 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree about Modry. I think he deserves all the bile put upon him. Part of the issue is him getting undo minutes. I can only find stats for his last two years here, but averaging 24 minutes a game for 161 games over two seasons isn’t 3rd pairing minutes. It seemed like he became a coach’s favorite because he followed direction, but simply wasn’t effective.

My issue with Modry is that he did next to nothing. I can recall countless replays with him standing and watching the game from just to the side of the net instead of covering the guy scoring.

I’m not someone who goes for overly macho hype or finds feminization as a form of insult very palatable. If Modry’s play style was effective, I don’t care if he was physical or not. But he wasn’t physical and also wasn’t effective. He was carrying a purse out there and wouldn’t even hit a guy with it, he’d just stand still and watch them score and then Murray would reward him with another shift.

And it’s not like he stuck somewhere else where his talents and potential were better utilized and he had better results, so I’m kind of puzzled by the envy of the performance Modry put on for other teams. Those teams certainly weren’t impressed enough to invite him back. He spends one full season in ATL after signning there as a UFA (I sent Don Waddell a thank you card at the time), and then they trade him in a deal that sees his spot on the D replaced with a 7th round pick (so clearly they thought he was valuable on the blue line).

The Modry “that played in Dallas” then was so impressive to his new team, they trade him at the deadline.

After his full UFA year in ATL, he plays a total of 76 games over two seasons for teams not the Kings. I’m sorry, but that doesn’t speak to anyone thinking this guy was worth keeping on a roster.

Modry sucked. Comments and commentors on plenty of boards are irrational, unreasonable, and hyperbolic on topics and opinions that may be similarly. Modry sucking has more weight to it than that.

by Captain Material on Aug 4, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I can think of plenty of players that put up points but didn’t make a significant contribution to the team being better or winning. His second stint here stands out to me as bad much more than his first, but the guy was, for lack of a better term, a screw-up. Tripping on breakaways with the goalie out of the net, firing the puck into the bench and his teammates instead of out of the zone, etc.

Hey, if you can stomach Blake being out there for consideration without screaming about it being irrational or unreasonable, I have trouble finding your issue with Duschene being similarly considered.
