JftC Western Conference Poll Madness (POLLS)
The JftC Western Conference predictions are almost complete, with a level of detail heretofore unseen in human history. There's just a weeeeeee bit of detail missing in the data. So here are a couple of bonus polls to clear that up. There might be one more round, but hopefully not.

Final Kovy contract update! $3 million in fines, 1st and 3rd round draft picks. The End.

Cap reduction, I think. But draft picks do sting.
A lot is getting lost in the backlash, here. I see people saying “Why didn’t Chicago, Vancouver, etc. get fined too?” Because the league didn’t reject those contracts (though I think they should have). The Devils decided not to rework it at that point, and stuck to their guns, but lost arbitration. They knew, going into it, what they were risking if they lost. Secondly, people are acting like those contracts are all the same; they are in type, but not degree. The Kovalchuk contract went further than the ones already investigation.
It’s not as bad as it could have been. The league could have imposed fines before the agreement with the NHLPA, and that would have hit their cap space as well. Plus, they got their last cap-bending contract, which saves them an extra 2.3 million a year.
It really did look like the league was going to spare them fines altogether, although the CBA doesn’t seem to indicate that they are optional. I wonder if they would have been able to get away without any fines at all if they hadn’t pushed it again. Very odd.

I still think they should have punished the Canucks and Hawks retroactively
This big contract, long years trend is Mike Milbury’s fault… LOL Rick DiPietro

I agree that the NHL should have acted earlier — but that window closed when the joint agreement grandfathered all of those in. Which, in the guise of taking a stand against contracts that “harm the league”, was comical in itself.
But I don’t remember the Devils objecting to those teams getting off scott-free in that NHL/NHLPA settlement, as long as they got theirs.
