A question so burning, it doesn’t need a verb.

Or rather, that should have read:

Brilliant! :-D

I’ll get the hang of this text editor someday.

Great Article

#1-The best news would be both goalies playing so well the question remains unresolved. I am hoping the games are divided at a ratio of about 3.5:1.5, with Quick maintaining a better GAA than last year. And, I hope Quick uses the “poke check” significantly less; he began to incorporate it mid-season, and by the slump it was too predictable and mostly ineffective.

#2-Last year Doughty decided to place more emphasis on Blake-style hip checks and on having a more accurate shot on net from the point. This year, he is already used to the new curve on the stick, with an entire season of performance under the spotlight behind him. I can’t wait to see what he is looking to focus on this year. His upside probably includes Deputy Prime Minister, winning a powerball lottery and having to choose between Christina Aguilera and Scarlett Johansson. Then, he would turn 25 and hooboy, lookout.

#3-I don’t often like the plus-minus stat, but when we do the math after three years on Kovi’s actual positive contribution in goals-for after subtracting goals-against, I predict the cost per goal per year will be exceeded only by the count of laughs per mention of the contract.

#4-The Bodog over-under is 101.5. Perfect, I think, likely within 2 points either way. If we can get a steady line-up that has time to “gel” with a 4th line that can honestly contribute 8-10 minutes a game, 103-105. If we are a 3-line team looking for a platoon guy to surprise us occasionally, and Kopi repeats a lengthy offensive slump, the range is likely to be 95-98. Anything below 95 will be “same old Kings,” and that just cannot happen. Speaking of which, I hope the only time I see Jeremy Roanick is when he is muted between periods on an occasional network game, and not on the Kings website.

#5-In sports, your high-profile failures can be expected to outshine your high-profile successes. Taylor was handicapped by the same reluctance of big-name players to come here as Lombardi struggles with now. I always liked Dave Taylor, still do, as both player and GM, but he only got us so far and ultimately did not deliver the Cup. It also pisses me off that Louie DeBrusk does analysis on TV broadcast; ever since he crushed Taylor from behind, with a hit that was shoulder on nape sending Taylor into a half-somersault face-first into the ice, I have held a grudge. Not at a Craig Muni level, but similar. I just hope those classless clowns knew who they really were and felt it when Taylor scored that goal on a rush up the right wing in the ’93 playoffs…

Quisp just got my hopes up yesterday

I think Hickey and Muzzin will both make the team, with one of them going down when Greene returns.

I kinda figured one of them would go down but still a bit sad to see it happen.

I actually think Harrold now has the inside track to being Muzzin’s partner to start the season over Drewiske and I actually think that is the right call. Harrold was very solid last year when he was in the lineup and according to TM has gotten in excellent shape over the summer. Harrold was good for us in the playoffs when paired with Johnson and Muzzin will be a physical presence on that pairing. Plus our PP can now involve only defenseman with no forwards on the point! DD-JJ on the first unit(that probably will be out there the vast majority of the time since both those guys can probably play the entire two minutes) and then Harrold-Muzzin on the second unit is solid as well.

by GoKings09 on Oct 1, 2010 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I wanted to see him but I knew he might not make it. I thought TM’s statements were slightly more in favor of Muzzin, but I also forgot about Harrold. He’s definitely paid his dues.

no forwards on the point!

Thanks, Nut. I just miss being able to see him play, which I know is just my own fannishness rather than a verdict on whether or not he’s ready. But at least I can look forward to seeing Muzzin for the first time instead, now. It really sucks being an out-of-town Kings fan this preseason.

I know. I tried to put quotation marks with the statement but I failed miserably. I just thought it was funny that he didn’t even bother to check.

1 Quick with Bernie on back to back, busy weeks and the eastern swing. Lots of second guessing with goalie win or slump streaks. Reminds me of the Ducks cup run situation in goal. May come down to who stays healthy.

2 Doughty will be better still and Johnson appears to be turning a corner.

3 Kovalchuk or the Core. Odds say the Core continues to improve as Kovalchuk glides past his prime and becomes a white elephant.

4 Less. 94-96. In the Kings Cup year they struggled to secure a playoffs spot with just 88 points (having notched 102 only two seasons earlier). At least three too many last minute or lucky bounce wins last season.

5 Taylor signaled a turn around in management from Rogie’s “tall glass and a cigar” deals. Lombardi is moving team management to its next logical step

I asked this on Rich's site

but I want to get an answer here too:

I’d like to see a successful argument that starts with the following sentence:

"Clune-4th C-Westy is a better line than Clifford-4th C-Westy because…"

I’m asking because I can’t think of a single one…

by Doughty99 on Oct 2, 2010 3:12 AM PDT reply actions

sigh...

I hope Clunatic proves me wrong.

by Doughty99 on Oct 2, 2010 2:42 PM PDT reply actions

Well, the 4th line is probably the most malleable

Add that to the usual friction that happens during a season (injuries, etc.), and I would be surprised if the 4th line looks the same at mid-season as it does presently. Clune may be moved to the press box. Or: Once the season begins, Lombardi will have more leisure to work a trade to clear up roster space without the pressure of having to cut the team down to size before the season begins.

Clifford and Schenn may be a little problematic because of the limits on shuttling them between juniors and the NHL. But I expect that Loktionov will get a good look this season at some point.

So this is just a minor setback for those of us who want to see the younger guys show what they can do. The battle is not lost. :-)

by DougX on Oct 2, 2010 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

So then why not start the season with them?

I won’t regurgitate the overwhelming evidence already presented as to why Schenn, Hickey, Lokti and ESPECIALLY Cliffy (Cliffer? It’s gotta be one of the two…) make the Kings better, so I’ll just pose a question: how much are we going to get for some fringe NHLers who other GMs would instantly realize are being traded b/c they’re clearly outside our plans going forward? I’m not saying we should just let them leave for nothing, I’m asking what could we really get for Clune+Ersberg? TL & Wiskie? A 3rd rd pick or two? Is that worth keeping these kids off the ice? With how well they’ve been playing against NHLers, wouldn’t it be more detrimental to send them down for a month waiting to find a trade partner, while the kids revert to playing against slower, crappier competition?

Believe me, I’m not looking this “having depth” gift horse in the mouth, but isn’t the goal to “give the team the best chance to win?” Plus, even if we lose TL, Clunatic and Wiskie, we’re still super deep. We don’t need a pick and we dot need a veteran (that’s the reason we’re having this discussion in the first place!)

Look, there’s no way of knowing if these kids are ready for this challenge, but we do know they have much less to gain playing against weaker, crappier competition.

DL should take the risk and give them the shot they’ve earned. If DL really believes his rhetoric from his Kovalchuk justifications (and I believe he does) we’re still at least a year away anyway, so get them some pro experience!

Come on DL/TM, dont make this decision with your head, make it with your heart & your head.

by Doughty99 on Oct 2, 2010 6:16 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

What I'm saying is that the beginning of the regular season is, to some degree, an arbitrary deadline

I understand that it’s not arbitrary in the sense that the games count in the standings.

But did you catch what Murray and Lombardi said about Muzzin? They still don’t feel that they can make a definitive judgment about him, and that he’ll start the season with the team on a sort of probationary basis. The thing is, the schedule forces you to make a decision, but because you make it in a hurry, it may not be the right one. You need to retain some flexibility, to course-correct later if necessary.

As to how much Lombardi could get in trade for these assets that might or might not be traded later, the answer is, you’ll never really know until you try. And you don’t want to try under time pressure, when you’re desperately trying to cut your roster down to size before the regular season begins.. Because you have absolutely no leverage in that situation. That’s what I’m pointing out, and that point seems to have eluded you.

Also, see Quisp’s most recent post, in which he makes somewhat similar points.

O'brien & Hordichuk placed on Waivers

See, good teams rid themselves of marginal players all the time. That’s one of fhe primary traits that seperate them from the crappy teams who pick them up.

by Doughty99 on Oct 2, 2010 6:37 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Lewis, Clune and Westgarth are all young enough so that it’s still a little too early to give up on them. They make turn into something worthwhile yet.

Calling them “marginal” on the assumption that they will always be marginal is kind of foolish. And quite frankly, it makes you sound like an asshole who is arguing just for the sake of arguing.

Whoa, Pump the Brakes, Dougie

What’s the point of sites like these if you’re not allowed to express an opinion?

Secondly, do you make a single point in all your replies directed at me? You say you’ll never know unless you try and in the next sentence you say you shouldn’t try. And where do I say Westgarth is marginal or shouldn’t be in the squad? I read the rest of your post, but I stopped paying attention after that line. You didn’t bother to answer a single question I asked, your post read like you just wanted to call me an asshole, and I’m not interested talking hockey with someone who’s not paying attention and just trying to pick a fight.

FInally, are you taking my comments personally? Are any of my comment indented below yours like I’m replying to you? Do I address “DougX” or “town idiot” in any of my comments? I could care less about your moronic, uninformed opinions – no need to get all fired up there, champ.

Oh, I know. You’re upset because you pooped your pants. Well, I’m sorry you did that, but wash up. Even someone like you will find love one day; in the meantime, there’s no need to take out the anger you feel over your miserable existence on me or anyone else on this site.

Go root for Ducks, douche.

DougX, you sully the surname sir.

We want people to post here. Hundreds of people read but do not post, and zero-to-bitch-in-six-seconds posts will only discourage people from both posting AND reading here.

Let me tell you, I don’t even go to Hammond’s blog because the level of discourse is acrimonious and personal, on top of just plain ornery. I can tolerate the ill-informed, or the stubborn, but when it gets to the point where people just look for the opportunity to bash their pet opponent, it is just ugly and I don’t need that in my life.

Don’t ruin this site, there are plenty of ways to disagree with flair; you make so many brilliant points that it was like fingernails on a chalkboard when I read you calling Doughty and asshole.
