Have the Kings made their final cut yet?

The Kings previously said they would only take the final roster of 23 plus one spare goalie (Jeff Zatkoff) on the European trip. However, unless I can't count, or they left someone behind without announcing it, they took 25 players to Germany today.

  1. Anze Kopitar
  2. Dustin Penner
  3. Justin Williams
  4. Simon Gagne
  5. Mike Richards
  6. Dustin Brown
  7. Ethan Moreau
  8. Jarret Stoll
  9. Trent Hunter
  10. Kyle Clifford
  11. Trevor Lewis
  12. Brad Richardson
  13. Kevin Westgarth
  14. Scott Parse
  15. Drew Doughty
  16. Willie Mitchell
  17. Rob Scuderi
  18. Jack Johnson
  19. Alec Martinez
  20. Matt Greene
  21. Davis Drewiske
  22. Viatcheslav Voynov
  23. Jonathan Quick
  24. Jonathan Bernier
  25. Jeff Zatkoff
I'm not counting Colin Fraser or Jake Muzzin, who seem destined to go on IR before the season starts -- but they're probably on the trip, too, right? After all, doesn't everyone get to be there for the "home opener" against the Rangers?

Anyway, assuming I can count and assuming I didn't miss a press release, the Kings still haven't decided who of Scott Parse, Davis Drewiske or Viatcheslav Voynov will draw the short stick. Voynov is waiver-exempt; Drewiske and Parse are not. (The only other waiver-exempt players on the roster are Clifford and Bernier.)

The conservative move would be demoting Voynov, since they wouldn't lose anyone to waivers that way. Given how thin the Kings are at left-wing (seriously, if Gagne or Penner get hurt -- it's Dwight King?), I think it would be stupid to get rid of Parse.

What are the chances Lombardi waives Drewiske or deals him in the next few days?

I'm just thinking out-loud. I like Drewiske. But Voynov has had a great camp. And he's put in his time in the AHL. (Oh, and the power play...)

His recent play is awful, his head was up his ass during the playoffs, and he looks like a degenerate. I’m right, you’re wrong.

BOOM!

i think that

murray has shown a sometimes inexplicable loyalty to players. i fear that voynov will be sent down. i can dream that parse or drewiske wil be traded for a pick and voynov called up, but…

look no further than the loktionov and moller situations (allthough oscar did get a longer look last year.)

what i don’t like is that voynov is 21 and the hockey geniuses say that all russian players leave the ahl after a season or two for khl money. what’s it been, 2 or 3 in manchester?

i’m too accustomed to the past wheel and deal kings, with rookies getting all kinds of chances (rosa, berg, storr.) this conservative approach to building a player and a team is conservative.

They do like to leave after the ELC is played out.

But Voynov is still on his ELC which slid a couple years. He can’t leave while under contract if he ever plans on playing in the NHL.

Plus his buddy Lokti is already in Manchester so the kid will be fine for one more season in the minors, with a few cups of coffee with the big club this year.

He is also the ONLY Right-Hand shot in the pipeline which counts for quite allot in the roster puzzle pieces.

i’m sure he’s a nice guy, but i could really do without westgarth. can’t he just tag along for team morale?

by BoulderDodger on Oct 2, 2011 7:03 PM PDT reply actions

I assume since he’s been hurt for the last week or whatever Westgarth will be on IR too. And then it’s bye-bye Whiskey. Seriously, the Kings have too much depth at defense for him to stick around and Voinov earned his spot.

Maybe they’re waiting until the season starts to waive someone so that guy is less likely to get picked up?

With Muzzin injured ...

… no big bodied defenseman in the depth pool. Doubt he goes anywhere.

Slava is the logical pick for going down from a purely heartless business perspective.

Unless they drop Hunter down who should also be waiver exempt.

True, although the criticism of Drewiske in the past is that he hasn’t played in a way that makes good use of his size and strength.

I like Quisp’s idea of trading him for a low pick, but as far as I can recall, that kind of activity doesn’t happen much at this point in the season. There’s waiver-wire activity as guys get cut, but not much in the way of trades. Besides, everyone knows that the Kings have too many Ds, so if anyone out there wants him, they’ll wait in hopes that the Kings will waive him (unless they’re low in the waiver claim pecking order).

Big Bodied..

The two largest are Greene followed by Drewiske. Greene is slow but effective and Drewiske plays a soft game. Scuderi is Drewiske size but his is not a hitting game.

The Kings’ system is certainly stacked with talent on defense but currently Muzzin is the only one ready to make the jump who is also big bodied.

I’d hate to see the defense “downsized” to end up battered by the end of the season and beaten down in the playoffs…which appeared to be number one problem Vancouver encountered

I think the Kings would do well to upgrade at the big bodied D first position

The problem is it will be tough to find one better than any of their top six or even seven defensemen.

i only got to see voynov in vegas – but i think his upside is far more then drewiske’s and he may as well start traveling with the team.

drewiske’s a nice fill in player – but i think it’s time for him to move on.

by jmsalsa_ on Oct 2, 2011 9:39 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, the thing about Drewiske is that he has passed out of the ‘prospect’ phase of his career. At this point, what you see is probably what you’re gonna get, whereas Voynov is young enough so that he will probably continue to improve. The thing about DD is that at this point, there isn’t much justification for allowing him to suck up minutes that could go to talented younger guys who are on the cusp of proving themselves — Voynov, Hickey and maybe even Campbell.

They'll "cut" someone in Germany

And by cut I mean get Westgarth bombed (it is Oktoberfest), and leave him at the hotel as they fly off to Sverige

On that note, bar him from all planes and trains!!! And put up roadblocks and checkpoints!!!
