This season is indicated as '12, last season as '11, etc.. Change refers to the difference between this season's pace and the average of previous seasons, if any. I've got some posts with actual writing in them coming up, but I thought I'd post the chart first, just to get things rolling. I notice:

  • Voynov is in Manchester.
  • Parse is barely playing.
  • Kopitar is on pace for his best year.
  • As is Johnson.
  • Richards, Stoll, Doughty and Penner are way off pace.
More later. Fun times.

Doughty

He looks so incredibly ordinary out there it’s shocking. He has unquestionably been the Kings’ best defenseman the last two seasons (I thought Quincey was frequently much better than him his first season), but this year he is bottom half. Johnson, Scuderi, and Mitchell have all outplayed him among the regulars, and Voynov was better during his stint with the big club.

So is it the lack of a training camp bringing his game down? The old standby excuse, Murray’s terrible system? Or is Doughty really not that good?

I am afraid the Kings got fleeced with his contract…

by Garrett79 on Nov 4, 2011 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I think it’s a little early to be saying that. He just came back after getting his shoulder dinged up, I’d bet he’s still nursing that a bit. He definitely appears to be in good shape, and seems a bit faster out there. I think he just needs to settle in and he’ll start producing.

He had some really nice plays the last couple of games, and I think he’s pretty damn solid defensively.

Nobody is producing because our system sucks.

I think we should wait for them to collapse in home plate and shoot into their bodies

No, you’re just being off the wall tonight. But….. given the circumstances, and the excellent scoring happening around the nhl on this lovely saturday evening, who can blame you.

by number 6 on Nov 5, 2011 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

So yes, I guess it all adds up to the system sucking. But you know what? I’ve been a Kings fan for a long time… and there has been poor talent, poor coaches, poor this and poor that. But I’d have to think about it to find a team as talented as this where it clearly shows there are system issues.

by number 6 on Nov 5, 2011 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know if the Kings got fleeced with his contract or not. But I’ve seen this happen so many times. Let’s use DD as an example. You can sign a mega contract for $6.5M or even $6.8M a year and it’s done quickly. Everyone’s happy and that’s it. No one thinks anything more of it.
But no, you’ve gotta get your extra money because your Potential is so damned high. Then of course you’re going to prove to everyone how much you deserve that contract, and it all starts to unravel from there.

Well good luck to Doughty getting it back. Being in the east I’ve only seen him play like twice on tv and have so far been less than impressed.

To be clear, I’m not just talking about Doughty. Look at baseball. AJ Burnett of the Yankees, Vernon Wells of the Angels. How about Napoli. Normal contract, burns it up!! Not saying that Napoli shouldn’t get paid more…. even a lot more.
But when it goes into these ridiculous issues over having to get another $200,000 per year (whatever tiny % that is of the contract) it doesn’t seem to lead to anything beneficial. Just the player trying to do too much to justify it. And when you Try to do too much, you’re no longer the same player, artist, writer, accountant…. whatever.

by number 6 on Nov 4, 2011 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

Thomas Vanek used to get some heavy flak, and now he’s a hero and leader they’ve always loved.

I have no idea why Doughty’s the current topic right now but I’ll bet in a few years it won’t be a question.

I think you’re probably right…. but from what I’ve observed it’s not unusual for an athlete who’s signed a huge contract to come out the next year and try to prove that he merits it. Not the best motivation is all.

by number 6 on Nov 5, 2011 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Kopitar needs to stop it with the saucer passes. He did it last year with Brownie and we got into the longest slump after that. This year, he did it at the 1st home game against the Blues, and we have barely scored a goal at home since.

We don’t do well when we start feeling too confident. Or when we start feeling not confident enough.

by Passemoilapuck on Nov 4, 2011 2:52 PM PDT reply actions

So far, we have 2 saucer passes followed by 2 slumps. Clearly empirical data doesn’t lie.

Don’t forget that this comment is part of a thread where the original post is trying to extrapolate season-long trends based on small samples, and forecasting 33 goals for Voynov this season.

Opinion

Sound off please.
Anyone else of the opinion JMFJ is making less and less bone head defensive choices and at the same time going full throttle in the rotation into offense?

by kevin_ebel on Nov 4, 2011 3:33 PM PDT reply actions

ya know, i was never a JJ fan UNTILL this season. The way he was he pushing Kovalchuck off the puck againt NJ was how i expect the whole the whole team to pay. We are a larger sized team. JJ has been playing great compared to DD, with no hold out at all. They may be fast, but they should not be able to control like that, especially a rookie team like the Oilers. JJ is really stepping it up,

Please remind me, Dean…

Why did you sign Moreau and Hunter?

Loktionov, Moller, Holloway, Toffoli, all solid young players who could have been playing for the Kings this season, but intead are being wasted in the juniors and minors while useless players skate with the Kings who never should have been acquired in the first place.

by Garrett79 on Nov 4, 2011 5:18 PM PDT reply actions

Just so you know, Garrett

Dean probably won’t get back to you on that one.

Just sayin, don’t spoil your weekend waiting around.

Dean texted me this afternoon (he reads this blog in case you didn't know)

He got confused with the whole Doughty situation going on, just started signing players left and right. He admits now it was a mistake to sign those guys.

I think Moreau fits pretty well. Hunter hasn’t shown much yet, and probably won’t ever.

by BobKnob on Nov 5, 2011 10:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Moreau and Hunter

@ Garrett79, I think the theory was that more veteran leadership was needed to keep the kids from going off the rails again and playing shooting gallery hockey in the playoffs, instead of sticking with THE SYSTEM. Of course, now we have to be concerned once again that we may not make it to the playoffs.

by Choralon3 on Nov 4, 2011 5:51 PM PDT reply actions

but if TM cant stick with “a” system whats the point???

by BarryAllen on Nov 5, 2011 12:57 AM PDT up reply actions

what i mean (while im drunk obviously) is TM doesnt stick to any kind of plan. With the talent at the kings disposal during this season, where’s Voynov?? He has proven himself, many times between scoring and fantastic plays all together started at the blue line

Kings' Offense?

I think I have heard of that. I remember something vaguely in the earlier part of the 90s when I was younger, then it disappeared for a while, showed up fleetingly at the turn of the century and hasn’t been seen since.

All I see when I look at these kinds of charts is whose shooting percentage is going to cool off, and whose is due for a rebound.

Look at career shooting percentage as a whole. Much more predictive power there.

More from the dept. of unintentional hilarity

From LGK:

Kings are 1-3-2 with Doughty.

That’s four points out of a possible 12 for a 33.3% points percentage.

Kings with Voynov….80%.

Last year, the top five teams in the NHL had point percentages of 71.5%, 65.2%, 64.6% (x2), and 64%. Since the lockout, you generally have one team and only one team even hit the 70s.

But a point percentage of anything less than 80% with Doughty in the lineup is now UNACCEPTABLE!

Small sample sizes, ladies and gentlemen! This standard is flawless.

It may be a small sample size, but that is not always a valid argument. Especially when your most recent opposition in that sample has been New Jersey, Phoenix, Edmonton, Dallas, and Colorado, only a single playoff team among them last season.

If the Kings are this bad in a small sample against bottom-dwellers – and their current positions in the standings notwithstanding, these are all bottom-dwellers – I personally fear how badly things will get when they start playing good teams like, oh I don’t know, Pittsburgh.

Now that I’ve said that they should go out and crush the Penguins tonight, right?

by Garrett79 on Nov 5, 2011 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you’re missing my point entirely.

Their standard for being mad at Doughty is the Kings having a better than or equal to 80% point percentage. No team has met that standard. People can jump to terribly bad conclusions based on a handful of games, and blatanly ignore that there is a strong regression to the mean. Parse isn’t going to shoot 25% and Doughty 0% over the course of the season, just like JQ wasn’t going to stay a .972 goalie forever.

Teams can have legit problems and legit reasons to celebrate over stretches of games. I’m not denying that. The problem with the current celebration of the Quick shutout stretch over what’s happening lately is that a lot of problems with the offense were there before.

Especially when your most recent opposition in that sample has been New Jersey, Phoenix, Edmonton, Dallas, and Colorado, only a single playoff team among them last season.

This is not a good argument, though. The record of a team in prior seasons is irrelevant.

To put it another way, when the Kings finished 27th in the league in 08-09, does that mean that no team had any business losing to them when they made the playoffs in 09-10?

Teams with good goaltending, good shot ratios and who are generating solid scoring chances shouldn’t be scorned. The key is to get the Kings to consistently do the right things rather than worry about the opponents they lost to.

That’s a silly argument. Let’s go back to 2009-10 for a moment. If the Blackhawks had gone through a stretch that season where they when 1-3 against Phoenix, LA, Atlanta, and Tampa Bay (or any assortment of average-to-bad teams from the prior season) they would have been quite concerned. That is an appropriate analogy because the Hawks in 2009-10 were about at the same point in their evolution as the Kings are now. Regardless of “small sample size”, the Kings are better than those teams and there is no excuse for going 1-3 against them.

And the Kings were 26th in ’09, by the way.

Small sample size or not, when you’re playing like shit you’re playing like shit. And Drew Doughty has played like shit for the most part this season. And like it or not, when you hold out and then sign a deal making you the highest paid player on the team and one of the very highest at your position, there is going to be a more intense focus on your performance.

That having been said, I am not putting the blame on Doughty. I don’t think he has played well at all but I think the reason for this recent losing streak is the system, not the players.

by Garrett79 on Nov 5, 2011 8:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, in fact

Hello……….. thats what i too was trying to say in an above post. Had he signed a huge contract he A) wouldn’t have missed camp and B) wouldn’t have everyone staring down his snout so to speak.

Tonight Lidstrom scored two more goals. 5 goals and 5 assists. He’s getting paid less than Doughty…. who has two points so far.

by number 6 on Nov 5, 2011 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I think calling Dallas a poor team at this point is a bit premature. They were a single game out of the playoffs last year, and no longer have Marc Crawford as their coach (holy fucking balls he is awful). They also picked up Sheldon Souray in the offseason (they should thank EDM for fucking that situation up).

Colorado and Edmonton are also young teams with a lot of talent, they are teams on the upswing and at some point we’re going to see them break into the playoffs.

by defrim65 on Nov 5, 2011 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

Two things

1) DD might not be living up to the $7 million, but he will, and we will all be happy.
(or he won’t and it will be just another chapter in Kings history, but if we would have let him go he definately would have went on to being the next Orr. I still choose to believe, its only 12 games into the season, and he is going to come around and be one of the best defenseman in Kings history)
2) If we are Philly west how come they have 8 goals in the second period tonight and we have 26 in the whole season?
