Three Sets of New Lines: see if you can guess... - Jewels From The Crown

...which one is mine, which is Terry Murray's, which one is my parody of Terry Murray, and which was generated by my very own Murray Line Randomizer.

1.

Simon Gagne - Anze Kopitar - Justin Williams

Dustin Brown - Jarret Stoll - Trevor Lewis

Dustin Penner - Andrei Loktionov - Brad Richardson

Kyle Clifford - Colin Fraser - Ethan Moreau

2.

Simon Gagne - Anze Kopitar - Dustin Brown

Dustin Penner - Jarret Stoll - Justin Williams

Brad Richardson - Andrei Loktionov - Kevin Westgarth

Kyle Clifford - Colin Fraser - Ethan Moreau

3.

Dustin Penner - Anze Kopitar - Trent Hunter

Simon Gagne - Brad Richardson - Justin Williams

Dustin Brown - Jarret Stoll - Davis Drewiske

Kyle Clifford - Kevin Westgarth - Ethan Moreau

4.

Dustin Penner - Anze Kopitar - Justin Williams

Dustin Brown - Andrei Loktionov - Trevor Lewis

Simon Gagne - Jarret Stoll - Brad Richardson

Kyle Clifford - Colin Fraser - Kevin Westgarth

(1) was mine. (2) was Murray's. (3) was the parody. (4) was the randomizer. Today's lines, I'm sorta happy to see, are very close to my (1) lines, except my right side has Richardson and Lewis and Murray's has Hunter and Westgarth. At least Hunter isn't on Loktionov's line.

Chemistry, system, or homerism???

i’ve been trying to figure this out all season. in my opinion, if quick wasn’t playing lights out right now our record would look much much different than it does currently.

chemistry – sometimes you put a bunch of good players together and it just doesn’t work. [insert a DL yankees reference here]

system – i like[d] the defensive structure TM put into place upon his arrival. that said he seems unwilling to change or manipulate his system to accomodate players stengths [or weaknesses]. i feel he is often out-coached in game as well. as i say this i realize that i have no inside information to say that he isn’t trying ‘anything’.

homerism – i, like most people, love my team. and because of that i sometimes give too much credit to them. as i say this i can also be overly critical of them. is our depth everything most of us thought it to be or were we looking at them through rose colored glasses?

i don’t profess to have the answers to what is ailing the team, but something isn’t right. my gut instinct is that it’s a systems issue. i think we’re winning games in spite of the system at times.

fuck.

i feel better now.

Well I feel the same as the first part of your statement, but honestly I think it boils down to several different things. In the past Quisp has done threads posing hypothetical questions. And I tend to lean towards the idea that it’s a bit of a mix of the ideas that he’s put forth.

My opinion? First most of us here don’t know. But I’m leaning more and more towards the idea of what DL has provided the team with. Putting aside the fact that Simmer and Schenn were flipped for Richards, there otherwise isn’t one single DL forward on the entire team who is doing anything offensively whatsoever…. Lokti included thus far. It’s five years that DL is running the ship.

Regardless of who is or is not in the system, thats what I’d call slow goin? And even if you figure in Simmer, I don’t believe he broke the 15 goal mark. If in five years you can’t bring in One single home grown product thats gonna break the 15 goal mark, how exactly do you expect to win a Stanley Cup? And I’m not being flippant. I’m being serious as I think it’s a very valid question.

And as for DL drafted forwards, not a single one a third of the way into the season has broken the one goal mark. I mean you couldn’t make this stuff up.

If you exclude that 26 year-old elite 2-way center he acquired, Lombardi hasn’t improved the offense at all! And also if you don’t mention Simon Gagne or Justin Williams for some weird reason!

And even if you figure in Simmer, I don’t believe he broke the 15 goal mark.

It’s not like you can look this stuff up or anything. (He scored 16 in 09-10.)

Rudy, first of all I did realize too late after I’d posted that Simmer had scored 16…. once. I take your points for sure. It all comes down to point of view.
Simon Gagne was a UFA. Not the same thing. Justin Williams was a good trade. I wasn’t talking about trades. If I were I could just as easily have pointed out Penner’s four goals in over a half a season of games.

What I was talking about was a drafting philosophy. I like Justin Williams a lot. But lets be honest. The subject here has to do with the Kings scoring issues this year as DL had a five year plan, and it’s not like JW is having a fab year on the offensive end either.

Alarming Stat of the Day: Drew Doughty 5v5 GFON/60 = .88

That is really really really low. In fact worst in the NHL low (amongst Defensemen, 20 GP or more). Contrast that with Voynov who’s GFON/60 is 2.56 or last years Drew Doughty who had a 2.99.

Why?

-SFON/60 last year = 27, this year = 31.
-SAON/60 last year = 24, this year = 26

So when he is on the ice we are actually getting more shots than we did last year. In fact he is 21st in the NHL and 1st on the team in this regard. That’s weird. What that would mean I guess is that pucks have not been going in while Drew has been out there at an a highly unlucky rate. This is also in spite of being out there with our best players. So hopefully this is good news in that this will eventually normalize and pucks will start going in. Hopefully.

also for the record whenever Martinez comes back I think a Martinez/Doughty pairing could be incredible.

i just feel like this is more than ‘bad luck’

by Jack-Handy on Dec 5, 2011 1:47 PM PST up reply actions

yeah if it is not bad luck then it is a shot quality issue which would likely be a systemic problem (coaching staff) rather than a personnel problem (players).

nice...

i see this from my seats time and time again and to me, it is a really honest answer. not that i expect him to come out and say, “the system is flawed.” or “the system creates this.”, but at least it’s a less vanilla answer.

BROWN: "It’s the same thing. We’ve got to find ways to generate more shots. I personally think it starts with our neutral-zone play, coming up the ice together. Sometimes we get too spread out. Whether it’s a quick counter or a long counter, we’ve got to be able to identify that, as a group of five, and come up together. Right now, we’re really spread out in the neutral zone, which forces us to dump it in. And if we’re spread out in the neutral zone, that means we’re going to be spread out on the forecheck, and it’s hard to turn pucks over with a one-man forecheck, which we’re seeing a lot of right now.’’

related to this, i see forwards standing on the half-wall waiting for a pass or for the play to get to them as opposed to circling the wagons and roling out/in with speed…

Can’t talk about that without shooting percentage. Team is shooting 2.76 at even strength when he’s out there. One of the unluckiest Kings at the moment for sure.

No one thinks about plays that don’t work out. Makes a nice pass to send Brown on a breakaway, Brown doesn’t convert. Generates a scoring chance and passes to Trent Hunter…well. And so on, and so forth.

Everyone needs to just relax (Doughty included). A lot of shots and chances are being generated when he’s out there. Things will normalize.

Oh and not coincidentally Voynov is one of the luckiest Kings (PDO 105.6).

Brown

Brown interim coach?
I have noticed this as well, last year somewhere in this blog I posted how well the Kings were rolling out of the D-Zone with control and numbers and outletting to a winger who was already on their horse with another forward.
Wonder where it got lost this year?

by kevin_ebel on Dec 5, 2011 4:31 PM PST reply actions

more interesting stats

-team shooting % when Doughty is on the ice at even strength is 2.76. that is by FAR last in the NHL. Last year he was 7th in the nhl with 9.93.

-Kings are 4th from the bottom in shooting percentage at 7.86. League average is 9.13 (last year).

-Kings defensemen are 4th in the league with 6.83.

-Kings forwards are second to last with an 8.24

I think a lot of the Kings offensive troubles thus far is luck based. I do think Murray’s system is stifling but its not this stifling. Kings shooting percentage hasn’t traditionally been this out of wack under Murray. I think we are due for nice big juicy regression to the mean some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Bad Luck or ...

… Other teams are evolving their game and we are stagnant.

Flip a coin.

by Cirtes on Dec 5, 2011 5:58 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Rick, I don’t agree. Trevor Lewis wasn’t scoring a lot in Manchester. Kyle Clifford wasn’t a huge scorer in junior. Fraser, Hunter, Moreau, Richardson, Westgarth. Based on stats and what I’ve seen, luck would have to change pretty dramatically to up the ante.

by number 6 on Dec 5, 2011 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

yeah but what I’m saying is that Doughty* (who also has a really high qualteam, meaning he is out there most of the time with our top end players) has a statistically unstusainably low team shooting percentage. I think the lowest amongst defensemen last year with a significant amount of playing time was around 6. Doughty’s team shooting percentage will normalize at some point. Meaning more goals.

*I’m just using Doughty as a barometer for team health since he is out there more than anybody else and plays with our best players.
