Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

That's a Great Deal for Justin Williams

Four-year extension for Williams " LA Kings Insider
Justin Williams has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Kings, worth $14.6 million. That’s a salary-cap hit of $3.65 million. Williams is currently tied for the team lead with 20 goals and will turn 30 in October.

Seriously. He's been getting $3.5MM for the last five years. Past injuries obviously keep his price down a bit, but he's having, if not a career year (he had been on a career-best pace but has tapered off a bit lately), a year that is of a piece with his two best seasons in Carolina. There was really no way Williams was going to get less than that $3.5MM on the open market, and I had been worrying that he might have his sights set on more, especially after his comments back in the fall about this being his contract year.

$3.65MM, therefore, seems about as low as you can go. I'm thinking Lombardi was able to get the number down by offering a longer term, which is something other teams might have been unwilling to do because of Williams's injury history. But that (the term) doesn't bother me, because the contract is tradeable. I believe this to be a tenet of Lombardi's, aside from just being (often-ignored) good common sense. Don't make deals that you can't get rid of if they don't work out.

As we've seen, Lombardi just doesn't do the "I've got to have this guy, no matter the cost!" deals. He doesn't trade for them, he doesn't sign them.

And, no, I don't think having Williams, Dustin Brown and Wayne Simmonds on the right side means that there is no room for Oscar Moller (currently playing RW, though he's a natural center), not to mention Tyler Toffoli. Players can play their off-wing. And, in any case, though that's a pretty great top three RWs (Williams, Brown, Simmonds), there is still room for another top six RW. At the risk of upsetting people, neither Dustin Brown nor Wayne Simmonds have fully staked their claim to a top six spot. Simmonds has shown the proverbial "flashes." Brown has played like a top-six about half the time, but spends the other half playing like a third-line energy guy, running people and coughing up the puck. If he is really a third liner, he's one of the best ever. I'm not down on Brown. But I can see a version of the Kings' future where, say in three years, the Kings have a real sniper on the right, and only one of Brown or Simmonds remains.

there is no room for Oscar Moller

Moller played left wing for the Kings almost exclusively until this season. Brown can play left too, where I think he’s actually better.

Oh, I wouldn’t think that…just wondering when he’ll pop up. This year if nothing else happens at the deadline/next year should be the time, yes?

Williams could have gotten more money for a shorter term in free agency. Dean gets a contract he can trade if need be. I think it’s a win for both sides. I like that Williams would rather stay with us here, though. He’s a gamer.

I was totally wrong

I said they would not resign any of the UFA’s this year. I was wrong about that. I think it is a good contract, and hopefully he can stay healthy and exceed our expectations.

This is Williams’ first season healthy in how many years?

As a huge Lombardi fan, I don’t like the length of this deal one bit.

It depends on whether you view his injury-riddled seasons as a chronic thing, or independent events. He’s gotten over his knee. Last year he was doing fabulous until he broke his leg — I still remember watching that on TV, it was a fluke thing.

We have the space to deal with anyhing if the worse happens. I’m not at all surprised DL did this.

Yeah I agree . Great deal for both sides. Williams is one of the better even strength forwards in the NHL this year. It is also awesome that despite being “demoted” to the 3rd line he has remained as productive and is seemingly playing with the same level of intensity as before. Also his contract will be up when he’s 34, I believe. As a comparison Ryan Smyth is currently 35. In his age 28 year (his age 29 year, Williams’ current age, was the lock out) Ryan Smyth scored 23 goals and 36 assists. He was then making ~3.5 a season and got a %114 raise after two 36 goal seasons at age 32.

Uff da, please no. I’m really not sure we need another big body on that side. Speed should be what we’re going for, maybe toss a conditional pick to Philadelphia and take Zherdev off their hands.

Zherdev

Was on waivers, went unclaimed.

I was enticed by his skill for his one year in NY, but man did he completely disappear after Torts became the coach and especially during the playoffs.

Very good move by Dean, IMO.

I like Penner a lot; and he’s actually a left wing. It’s odd that all the trade talk was directed at Hemsky in the end, was that misdirection or something?

Though I do wonder why, of all our D prospects, they wanted Teubs. Excellent deal for us.

So I hope it becomes a 2nd, I would have no problem with that.

by Clever Kings Handle on Feb 28, 2011 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

Zherdev? Why trade a pick when LA could;ve had him for nothing when he was waived. This is perfect for LA. They are going to have to cycle, forecheck and bang for their offense. One player on this day wasn’t going to change the entire offense LA has used pretty much all year. Penner will hit and forecheck with Brown or Simmonds. He plays hard and tough and will fit on this team. Teubert is still a project and wasn’t exactly a lock to play on the Kings blueline in the future. We had a pick to deal, I like the trade a lot. Good day for Deano, locking up Williams and going out on the line to get somebody that will help and didn’t lose a roster player.

by SuperSonic420 on Feb 28, 2011 11:35 AM PST reply actions

Like the Penner deal. Tuebert is behind on the depth chart with the likes of Voynov, Hickey and Forbort.

by Kingsfan99 on Feb 28, 2011 11:36 AM PST reply actions

I think that’s a good trade for Penner. i know you can never have enough young talent, but our farm system is so stacked with prospects and our team is one of the youngest teams in the league anyways. Where did Teubert even fit in? Voynov Hickey and Forbort are ahead of him. Our veterans on D are signed up for the next few years as well.

Great Monday!

I’m more excited about the Williams signing. Currently our most talented winger and he’s proven he can put up numbers when he’s healthy. I’m not buying the injury prone tag; those were more freakish than the types of injuries that keep re-occuring. Four years might be a bit much (I’d prefer 3) but at that cap-hit, good deal for both parties.

Picking up Penner is big for this season and next. Cap friendly if you project him to score 25-30 goals (wonder if that goes up if he plays with Kopitar consistently). And with the organizational depth on defense (Hickey, Voynov, Muzzin in the minors, not to mention Doughty, Johnson, Martinez, and Greene), the Kings made out great on this deal.

Any word on when he plays? Tonight against Detroit might be too soon depending on where he is right now but Thursday for sure with a big game against Phoenix.

by sstephen17 on Feb 28, 2011 11:42 AM PST reply actions

great monday indeed. I hope he’s able to make it for thursday’s game! This is why I love cheering for the Kings. Their system is built so well that we can trade a former first round pick and another future first rounder and not fret about it. The Dodgers on the other hand……..

We didn’t lose any roster players, we didn’t lose Schenn, and we went from Sturm-still-getting-up-to-speed to a top line LW with size and skill. Win.

Is the LA Times gonna find some way to throw a fit about that? I thought, when Sturm was claimed, that we’d have to wait until Monday to pass judgment. We were right.

Love the JW re-sign, like the Penner deal

What strikes me about JW’s new contract is that he really must like to play for the Kings, which is a double-extra good sign. He definitely could have gotten more money on the UFA market. Look at it this way: Both Frolov and Ponikarovsky got a bit more than $3 mil/year, and Williams is out-producing both of them combined.

I’m not worried about his injury history. I think his modest cap hit when he’s healthy is the biggest feature of this deal. If he has to go on IR, his contract will not count against the cap.

As for the Penner deal, I was kind of hoping we’d see Teubert pan out, but let’s face it, he was completely off the radar this year. And Lombardi dealt from his one area of surplus. So I think it’s a solid move.

What this tells me is that Dean is doubling down on the team’s style of play. He didn’t add a quicksilver skill guy, he added another big net-crasher with skills. In other words, the team doesn’t need to change, it needs to do what it does better. I’m good with that.

Love Williams as well. He’s only 29 but is a proven scorer and he’s won the Cup. I’m sure he would have gotten more as a UFA, especially if the cap goes up as anticipated. His numbers look even better considering he doesn’t get a lot of first unit PP time and is playing on the second line so to speak.

Meanwhile TSN loves this move, and is now predicting the Kings will go deeper in the playoffs. And the vast majority of Kings fans are elated we have Williams and care nothing about losing Teubert or picks.

Do the Kings really need a "sniper"?

Assuming Stoll can get three more goals the rest of the season, we’d have six players with 20+ goals: Kopitar, Williams, Smyth, Stoll, Brown, and Penner. Usually good playoff teams have strong defense, goaltending, and balanced scoring right?

With the balance this team has a (disruptive) sniper isn’t needed…at least not at this point.

Feels like everyone had it wrong and it was Edmonton and not the Kings who were on the spot to do something.

My definition of a sniper is

Luc Robitaille.

A sniper is a guy who can finish. He just has a knack for burying the puck. He may be a giant dork (Moulson) or slow (Luc) or a smaller dork (Toffoli) or an ass (Heatley) or he might be well-rounded (Stamkos). Hard shot? Maybe. But more accurate and with a quicker release than everyone else.

Wait till this year.

and of course trade deadline day is the day i have 59382479 pages of reading to do and a math midterm the next day. tonight’s going to be fuuuuun . . .

wish i could wish good luck for the Kings tonight, but . . . you understand. won’t be able to see the game. enjoy the game and thread!

Understood, my good sir. May it be a fine battle. :)

Hopefully...

Penner goes up front with Kopi and Simmonds….to me that sounds like a scary good line….

Per Lebrun

The conditional pick is a 3rd rounder unless the Kings win the cup, then it becomes a 2nd. So it looks to be Teubert, a 2011 1st (#20-25 in all likelihood), and a 2012 3rd (oh please let it be a 2nd!!!) for Penner.

I can certainly live with it!

Definitely!

GEM!!

Your team just gave up basically the same package the Bruins gave for Kaberle. [Colten was a first-round pick, they gave up another first, and potentially a second.] Except you got a 2nd liner. Remember Poni? That’s Penner. Only difference is he’s north american.”

Pulling an all-nighter (should it come to that) will be much easier tonight if i have this i can laugh at for the rest of the day.

when was the last time Kaberle scored 20+ goals?

I am laughing so hard.

The Kings paid a lot? They paid a LOT? Picks in a weak draft. And we have a pool of prospects that is already stacked. No loss.

We have an excess of D prospects, and while Teubert is a physical type, he is FAR from the most promising. He had issues; he might get it together, he might not.

People don’t know the Kings’ prospects well enough. They ought to have asked for Muzzin or Voynov or Alec Martinez, at least. If they only wanted big ol’ d-men, then Forbort! It boggles the mind.

Of all fanbases that probably appreciate our prospects and value them highly…we’re right up there.

And yet you see little mourning at all. There’s practically dancing in the streets.

Internet fan polls are hardly scientific, but the one at LAKI had 97% in favor and 3% against last I checked.

Copper and Blue is irrate. I’m glad we got Penner but don’t think we fleeced them (although I woulda pushed for Voinov if I were them)

For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.

He’s one of their most valuable forwards, and an already established NHLer. Which they need right now.

Is Teubert a lock to make it? No. But even if he does, that’s down the line.

I also don’t consider a 1st round pick a backbreaker. That’s why they’re upset.

Yeah, I know everyone wants to get into the “who won the deal” argument but in this case it really seems like a win-win. Both teams traded assets for needs and judgment will have to be reserved for 2-5 years down the line.

by JZarris on Feb 28, 2011 12:52 PM PST up reply actions

It might be a win win deal, eventually. I hope it comes to that. But.

I never had high hopes for Tuebert, and in any case, our surplus was in D prospects. So I think we made out like bandits.

The ‘Penner is Lazy’ meme is way over-played. He’s a Corsi beast. He creates time and space for his linemates. He has good hands. He’s a good player! And actually in the NHL.

Overpayment my ass.

Now, he was signed initially by EDM from ANA as an RFA and it cost them their 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks back in 2008 to get him. I think he had big shoes to fill from day 1.

From EDM’s perspective, they’re getting back a couple of early draft picks and a former 1st rounder for him. Almost like he was on lease or something for a few seasons.

by Passemoilapuck on Feb 28, 2011 12:57 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

That is a good point

I didn’t even consider the price they paid to get him as an RFA.

by JZarris on Feb 28, 2011 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

And it looks like they have to deal with immigration issues, so I won’t get to see him play against the Wings tonight. I feel ready to head to Staples already!

damn!
I was really hoping to see him in a kings uni tonight!!!!
Also curious to see what number he ends up wearing!

I don't know why he'd be upset

In exchange for Gretzky, they got Jimmy Carson.

Sorry, that’s mean. I liked Carson, and I honestly thought he’d do well with Edmonton.
