Think Like a Puck

I worked for a fisherman right after college. He was an urchin diver. In his spare time he’d enter free-dive spear-fishing competitions. He loved fishing.

Anyway, one afternoon he explained his Theory of Fishing. At the end of the explanation, which occupied most of three hour trip between Catalina Island and San Clemente Island, he said, “Really what you have to do is think like a fish. That’s it. Think like a fish.”

That’s what Quick is doing. He’s peering deep into that puck’s mind, touching its thoughts, smelling its fears, feeling its hopes before he swats it away with his blocker or traps it in his glove.
