May I Just Say I Thought Schenn Looked Pretty Great on the Power Play for the Kings Back in October?

I seem to recall he could have had about ten goals if it weren't for some freakishly weird bad luck on several plays.

That is all.

posts, great saves, "how did that puck not go in?!" moments

one millimeter in another direction on 4 different shots and he may have stayed up with the Kings because of his would-have-been production.

Ten Goals?

40, at least. 50, probably. And twice that many helpers.

In just half a dozen NHL contests. That would have been a record.

The near misses? Clang, the Diety of Posts (the most jealous of the Hockey Gods) had noticed Dumbardi’s impertinent sneer and boastful charts and boxes. “I will give him a choice, impossible to make, and later I will give him another.”

He's in Manchester to save $$$$$

That’s all.

Bring him up, lose the year on his contract but gain the all-important playoff experience.

This is the Kings being cheap and writing off this season.

Disagree
He’ll gain playoff experience in Manchester.

He gains playoff experience in LA which is more valuable than AHL playoffs. And as soon as the Kings get eliminated you send him down to Manchester to get further experience. The odds are the Monarchs are alive deeper into the playoffs than the Kings.

Oh, I didn’t know the Calder Cup was generally awarded later than the Stanley Cup.

Pressure

I guess I can see how it would be putting a lot of pressure on him. But it definitely is sending a sucky message to the fans. Maybe if the guys on the roster can figure out how to win this series, he gets called up strictly as supplemental support?

by CrownedRoyal on Apr 14, 2011 12:07 PM PDT reply actions

I wouldn’t think so. If they win, they have proven they don’t need him. Maybe if the Kings go down 3-0 to the Sharks (which I hope doesn’t happen), they’ll call him up for Game 4. Afterall, he has to play 2 games to burn the year of his ELC, and in my mind, no matter what spin they put on it, that’s why they made this decision – to perserve that year.

by Hoolie on Apr 14, 2011 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I think we fans need to get the idea that he can be our messiah out of our heads. We can’t have the same success without Kopi, and that’s the bottom line. There’s no logic in thinking that he could step in after playing a season against boys and be as effective as Kopi was. The message this decision sends is, “I’m not Dave Taylor. I’m not going to throw away some youth in order for a little playoff success.”

tl;dr I’m still really bitter about the Mark Parrish trade.

How would playing Schenn be throwing away youth? He’s still Kings property for years to come whether they play him or not. No, Schenn couldn’t fill Kopitar’s shoes – I don’t think anyone here has suggested he could. I would simply argue that I think this current team, without Kopitar, would be better with Schenn than without him.

by Hoolie on Apr 14, 2011 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Playing Schenn burns a year of his contract, bringing him one year closer to RFA status. What good is that if we don’t even get out of the first round or if we move on and hit a brick wall in the second? The only way bringing him up is worthwhile is if we win the Stanley Cup, and I don’t think we can do that without Kopi.

It seems like there are developmental as well as contract reasons being cited as reasons to keep him back.

But there’s the other argument: could he make a great impact right now? That’s unknown.

I mean, we think so. But even a dynamo like Taylor Hall only scored 22 goals in 60-some games this season, and he was given time to adjust.

Not sure how much this was part of the decision, but it’s something to consider. If he’d been in Manchester all year long instead (damn you, Canadian juniors!) he might be up with the big club right now.

Agreed. Risk vs. reward just doesn’t favor having him play right now.

Totally random question

I’m at a conference out of town and in a hotel that offers NHL Center Ice (which I’ve never used). Will the Kings/Sharks game be shown through the center ice feed? I assume so but am looking for confirmation…Go Kings Go!

by JZarris on Apr 14, 2011 12:14 PM PDT reply actions

The game is on VS only outside of LA/SJ. No center ice.

I’m not necessarily anti-Murray, but I don’t get why he values players with size so much. Westgarth is barely able to play hockey. Even if Moller gets pushed around, at least he has a sense of how to play his position as well as how to make pass and shoot.

I agree with you on this one Tuna (unlike above). Westgarth doesn’t really bring much to the table as a hockey player other than his size – and I don’t even think he uses that all that well on the ice unless he’s in a fight – which I doubt they’ll be in the playoffs.

by Hoolie on Apr 14, 2011 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Haha the Schenn thing is a pretty personal issue to people. We can all agree to dislike Westgarth getting ice time. I mean, at least Ivanans used to try to hurt people when he hit them. It’d lead to stupid penalties, but you could see that his purpose was to incite fights. I don’t think any of us really knows Westgarth’s purpose.

I simply cannot see the positives of this move. If anything it will lead to an extra power play opportunity for San Jose.

by JZarris on Apr 14, 2011 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t hate Westgarth but does he really intimidate anyone? There are enforcer fights…but he averages a teensy bit more than one hit per game. Granted, that’s on very limited ice time, but his ice time probably isn’t going to increase, so…

This angered me a day ago, and now it makes me furious. Stupid, stupid decision in my opinioni.

by JZarris on Apr 14, 2011 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno.

Moller’s not really cut out for a bottom six role.

by Lars H on Apr 14, 2011 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps, but what does Westgarth bring to the table, given that it is the playoffs? Murray talked on Tuesday about playing Westgarth for games 1-2 and then pulling him because the need for that type of role would have ‘diminished’ (paraphrased). Who does he plan on replacing him with…most likely Moller.

by JZarris on Apr 14, 2011 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless they’re going to call someone else up — but we’ve heard nothing to that effect so far. Not even in rumors.

Eh. They’re probably going to take runs at JW, so we can only hope Westy does…something…about that.

(I’m trying, here)

Just Sayin'

Can’t make chicken soup when all you have is chicken sh!t.

Neither option is ideal.

Westy’s big and less likely to get murdered along the boards, and that’s about it.

by Lars H on Apr 14, 2011 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, we’ll have agree to disagree, but as far as the potential impact made in 4 minutes of ice time I think Moller has far more upside and less risk than Westy.

Besides, Moller lived through that Bobby Ryan hit last year! The kid is tough!

by JZarris on Apr 14, 2011 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

They could have shifted Moller to center

And bring Zus back to a checking line role…

Ugh Murray…

TM is going to regret this decision if Westgarth gets caught in a line change/icing call against one of the Sharks top two or even three lines.
