Glass Half Empty: too bad there's no such thing as stepping up

Quiet, serious Kings prepare for Game 5 " LA Kings Insider

MURRAY: "The series is 3-1. I look at it as a self-inflicted issue right now. [...][T]hose goals against are plays that basically we hand to them through breakdowns and reads that have been made all year long. That’s a part of the game that we have taken a lot of pride in over the last three years, is to be a good, solid defensive hockey club, to do things the right way all of the time, as a team. So when I say I need players to play good, I need them to play the right way. We don’t need to have any one player, two players, feel that they need to put the whole thing on their shoulders and play extra-special, because that’s when problems start to come back at you and comes right back down our throat."

However:

LA Kings Head Coach Terry Murray Reflects On 2009-10 Season " Frozen Royalty
[In the playoffs against Vancouver], young defenseman Drew Doughty and Jack Johnson raised their games to levels not previously seen [...]. "[They] really stepped up in the playoffs," Murray beamed. "These two young players really understood what the playoffs are about. [...]They understood that ‘now’s it’s time—I’ve got to step up, I’ve got take my game to the next level.’[...] [T]hey knew what to do, they had that in them, and that’s the kind of game we’re looking for as we move forward into this year."

Take it to the next level, but stick to the system. Do what you've been doing, only more so. Step up, stay put. Be intense, yet calm. Bring the energy, don't panic. Play to your potential, and/or within yourself. It's a zen riddle. Whatever you do, don't think of a white elephant.

The problem with "step up" as a direction or instruction is, you can't act on it. It doesn't actually describe anything, other than "be better now." Or maybe, "you've been really great, but we believe that you can transcend your current abilities and be even better than you have been, and that's what's needed now, because it's the playoffs and if you don't step up we lose and you will have not reached the potential we believed you had. Now go out there and win!"

When you play a rigorous defensive system, stepping up doesn't mean squat. The system is, essentially, a fluid sequence of actions and reactions. If they do this, you do that. If he plays the puck x, you counter y. The system requires that every player trust that every other player is going to do exactly what he is supposed to do under the system.

Any new action, any variation, any stepping up of any kind, will, at best -- if you're lucky -- require everyone else on the ice to adapt very quickly to a new situation. Something that hasn't been happening all year is now happening. But the team has been playing within the system for two years or longer. You can't just suddenly start calling audibles and expect no unforeseen consequences.

Yes, I understand that the "step up" message (the part of it that's not just an empty cliche) is about battling harder, winning the scrums, leaving it all on the ice, etc., etc.. But those things are already built into the system, they are already required elements. Presumably, the players have already been executing the various elements of the system, because it's been working for two years. Also, that's why these players are playing. Because they could play the system. If they couldn't, they wouldn't be playing.

I don't think it's reasonable to expect players who must must must perform job x within the system to still be able to do x while "taking their play to the next level." Either you have your man or you don't. Either you finish your check or you don't. Either you have your stick in the lane or you don't. Either you communicate with your partner or you don't. There isn't some elite better version of doing any of those things. There's only doing them or not doing them.

You can't get the puck in deep...to the next level. But, if you think you have to take your play to the next level, you certainly might consider making that extra move at the blueline, when normally you would dump it in; or pinch when if you don't succeed it's an out-numbered attack; or try to pick the corner with your shot, when you would normally just try to get the puck to the crease, so your teammates converging there can get the rebound. Picking the corner might result in a spectacular goal by you (you stepped up!), but nine times out of ten it will result in a wide shot and a change of possession with you and your linemates now stuck 200 feet from where they need to be.

That's why people said if the Kings are going to win these games, it's going to be boring. Except for the winning. The winning is never boring.

Okay, we'll call that "glass half empty" part one. Since I didn't even say what I came to say. Part 2 tomorrow...

Terry Murray will have to "cliche" it up

“One game at a time”… Win the next game, and let’s see what the Sharks do in Game 6…

There’s really no pressure on the Kings now, it’s up to the Sharks to close…

Go away, or pass away. Your choice.

Well, I'll be the 2nd to chime in

I feel more secure commenting here as one can express a sort of ‘paradox’ in the same sense that Quisp expresses a paradox in his thread without someone either pushing it to the extreme (TM has already taken us two consecutive 100 pt seasons + playoffs ….. or TM is an idiot). I mean there really are shades of gray in life.

I think Terry Murray has helped the Kings and the younger players a lot. One need look no further than Kopitar.
That being said, I’ve been watching him carefully during the playoffs (TM, unfortunately not Kopi) and he doesn’t look comfortable to me behind the bench. Maybe he’s not the sort of coach who ever looks ‘comfortable’. Hey it’s a high stress job.
A commentator stated about Joel Quenville that when you look at him you never know if they’re winning by four or losing by a lot.

So, Quisp’s post states something very interesting that I never considered. The players looked very very confused. Also the fact that WM made reference (again) to panic (at least I think he did). It’s not surprising. It’s hard enough to do such a difficult thing as playing in a high stress environment (playoffs) when everything is clear. But when messages get mixed, you don’t know if you’re coming or going.

Can he take the Kings to the next level? I’ll leave it for other posters to comment on that.

Quisp Nailed It

This in a nutshell is why the Kings have struggled at times this season. Murray wants guys to “step up”, be more intense, make more offensive plays, but then nails them when they do that if it results in a goal or chance the other way. This is why someone like Lokti was sent down in Februay, even though he was creating chances offensively – he had one game where he was exposed a little defensively, and off to the minors he went. The bottom line is, to create offense, you need to take chances. Sometimes they work out, and sometimes they don’t and they bite you in the ass.

I couldn’t believe it when Murray said that Scott Nichol and Doughty’s offsetting penalties was the reason the Kings lost game 4. Sure, the Sharks scored two on the four on four. But the Kings got those 2 goals back. What about the other 4 goals? Why is this team who has been so good defensively this season all of a sudden running around in their own zone like chickens with their heads cut off?

Right now, I think the message Murray is sending to the Kings is muddled and confusing. They don’t know what to do and the result is what we saw in Games 3 and 4.

Hoolie thats what concerns me

They literally have been running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I virtually couldn’t believe what I saw on two of the goals in game 3…. and that’s when they had a lead. I mean, there seems to be a real confusion. Someone has the responsibility of lending a sense of direction.

Coming to Grips

The Sharks are adjusting faster then Murray can address with younger players. Its no wonder they look confused…they are being out foxed by talented veteran players with well developed hockey sense.

The Doughty penalty was foolish. A 4th line center for a key defenseman? Think of it the other way, it might have been 2-0 LA.

The message is that the Kings are still playing a system to train rookies and there remains a lot of hockey “intelligence” to teach before this team can make the type of “in-game” adjustments the Sharks made.

Not to make excuses for Murray but I doubt all player movements are decided by him. He is playing minus his key defensive player (the one with hockey sense who picks up trailers) and is working with a rookie defenseman who does not have his reads down, yet.

The Kings are doing well for the personal they currently carry and more important they have a future.

Where are the Sharks going from here, the second round then dismantled? Had the Sharks not drawn a depleted Kings I believe they would be the ones facing elimination.

Close as this year’s race was it simply came down to teams suffering key injuries finished in the bottom 4 while healthy teams got home ice. Murray did well.

haha … really now? Each series stands on its own. How this series has gone is no indication of how another series with the Sharks would have gone. So awfully bold statement there. :)

I agree

and i also don’t think the absence of kopitar is the problem with the last two games. the kings lost plenty of games with kopitar in the lineup, all year. the problem is the kings’ propensity for nervous breakdowns is kicking the ass of the sharks’.

Wait till this year.

Hold It a Minute

Angy:
I suppose you could say the Sharks played down to their opposition but that’s not something championship teams do IMO. Your criticism of my comment is fair enough but lets see if they have another gear to shift to in the next round…that is if the Kings don’t do them in 7! :-)

Quisp:
Is Kopitar the only one? Smyth is doing well but is not the same player he was last season. Williams is doing well but does not have the strength he had a month ago. And Penner, Is still the square peg trying to fit and Martinez is on a learning curve.

Not a big deal, just as I see it.

Sure some of the periods have been close but its hard to argue with 3-1

I am not implying that at all. So you are reading into my words. Just saying, you cannot assume how the Sharks played this series is how they would have played in another. Just as how the Kings played in this series is how they would have played in another. Each match-up brings its own set-up. Each game brings it’s own set-up.

As much as I want this over and done with tonight, fat lady hasn’t sung and I’m already pacing. :)

Sigh

As much as I would like to be optimistic on all this, I think the Kings are done tonight. If by the luck of the Road team (.600 winning percentage thru Friday) they pull it out tonight and bring it back to Staples their luck will likely run out here. Not to quibble on the post by “number 6” but unfortunately TM only led the Kings to 98 pts. rather than 100+…the difference between 4th and 7th was that 2pts right there.
Unfortunately with the best offensive threat side lined and guys that need to make a difference there like Penner NOT doing so, DD and JJ are trying to over compensate.
Both are young talented, offensive-minded Defensemen. Unfortunately they’ve forgotten their main job title too much.
Been a Kings fan since ‘88 (BEFORE Gretz showed up or I knew he was coming) and like any other long time King fan, have seen ownership try a rebuild strategy, blow it up to bring on an overpriced Vet, sink in the standings, start the rebuild again…
The last couple years I’m happy to say have been different, the Kings stayed away from the stinky deal that was wafting out of Atlanta last year or chasing that same prima donna this past off season. The old Kings would have sold the farm on that deal…
Lot of good young talent they are certainly being patient developing, maybe too patient, but isn’t it nice the expectations have been raised to where we now expect to make the playoffs and take the next step as an organization.
Keep the Faith. Go Kings Go!

Dutch - I knew that

when I wrote it. I was just trying to make the point that on LAKI either someone takes what you’ve said and obliterates TM, or on the other hand says look what he’s done for this franchise with x no. of points. Yes, I did know that it wasn’t 2 consec 100pt seasons.

I do agree w/o question that we have a certain number of prospects being developed and certainly more depth in regards to that than we ever have had.
I suppose I was posing a question regarding leadership (coaching, vets, not sure exactly where to be honest), but something is clearly happening that is creating a sense of panic in their game. Scuderi said it differently – immaturity, and WM called it panic.

If that’s the case…. is it soley because of the issue of age, or is there something else going on? Guys who were relatively steady during the season are all of a sudden running around like they’ve played hockey intensely for the last 4-5 years instead of most of their lives!

I hope that clarifies my post above.

"Stepping Up"

Means not going to Manhattan Beach and getting drunk the day before the game or practice.
