Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

Teddy Purcell scores game-winner, 2 points in ECF game 1

Teddy Purcell is second in playoff assists with 10. Pavel Datsyuk and Claude Giroux have 11, but I think Teddy will pass them since they're both playing golf now. Purcell's eleven points is four behind the playoff leader, Ryan Kessler. Also with 11 points: Joe Thornton and Ryane Clowe. Daniel Sedin and Alex Ovechkin are right behind with 10.

Teddy is getting a point a game in the playoffs, which is not quite double what he did during the season.

Someone please enlighten me

As to why Purcell is thriving. I haven’t really watched TB in the playoffs nor during the regular season. So other than the reactionary commenters who say Lombardi screwed up does anyone have a “reasonable” explanation? Is it just who he’s playing with as linemates? Or is something else? Is it partly he got religion after being traded and realized he was on a somewhat “last chance” to prove himself? Is it a different system in TB?

Someone please.

he's a playmaker; he's playing with players who are finishing, and he's getting regular minutes

my explanation is that murray’s system is suffocating, though I’m sure purcell benefitted in terms of his defensive game. at this point, i assume murray’s system is offensively-challenged, until proven otherwise.

Wait till this year.

Purcell has also played on the right wing all year for Tampa. The Kings tried to convert him to a left wing since we’re kind of full of right wingers. I think it’s easier for him to dish the puck from the right wing rather than having to flip it backhanded to the middle when he’s on the left side.

maybe....

i am a rt handed shot and prefer the left wing…..but maybe for him it was uncomfortable…..

it could also be...

you play harder for a team that acts like they want you around….idk….
TM telling players to play defense…then play offense without allowing them to…then getting mad they arent producing…seems counter productive….
maybe TP is more suited to Tampas 1-3-1 style…

and another idea

maybe Steve Yzerman is really smart. He’s evidently capable of seeing potential in someone and KNOWING how to bring it out. The Kings org maybe isn’t as much.

Should I prove the point? OK. They were talking about Sean Bergenheim on nhl live today. TB got him from the NYI. The commentator was saying that he thought Berg was a good player when with the Isles. But maybe Yzerman saw this too. Also, they were talking about Guy Boucher during Gm 1 having a system that he adapted as he went along.

So, great coach who is FLEXIBLE (OMG) and they get results. Is this surprsing? No.

There’s one flaw with your argument because Yzerman wasn’t the GM of the Lightning last season when they traded for Purcell at the trade deadline.

Bergenheim has been great in the playoffs but only scored 14 goals during the regular season and will be a free agent after this season since he only signed a one year deal so it isn’t like Yzerman knew that he would be great and wanted to sign him long term.

by GoKings09 on May 16, 2011 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

thanks for the correction

You’re absolutely right. He wasn’t GM at that point. However, one thing…. turns out TP only played 19 games w TB the year he was let go by the Kings. So I still sort of stand by my point.
Had that been TM w 3 goals in 19 games, how much of a chance would he have had to carry on the following season. And if I’m not mistaken it wasn’t until later on this last season that TP started to hit his stride. After 3 in 19 and then probably not a lot the first half of the season, the Kings would have done what they did in the first place…. let him go or off to the minors.

Also it was pointed out that they tried to play him on his off wing. I mean, if you would enjoy seeing someone flourish, it would be nice to put them in a position where they can succeed.

Let’s say it took the combo of Yzerman and Guy Boucher (especially Boucher) to take the risk of playing him w better players.

Also, clearly, clearly I don’t infer for a minute that Yzerman knew what he’d be getting in Bergenheim, but he obviously saw something he liked. Or put differently, he didn’t give up much to get Bergenheim, and they picked up TP for nothing I believe.
DL while he did pull a masterstroke getting JW (who admittedly did have a nasty pre trade injury history), also pulled off a poor trade for Penner, unless the zebra miraculously changes it’s stripes next year. If it doesn’t, then it’s really sad as it’s a contract year.

He only played 19 games because they got him at the trade deadline. We traded Purcell and a 3rd for Jeff Halpern.

I sympathize with Teddy but he did get 40 games with the Kings and his most common linemates were Jarret Stoll and Dustin Brown. In those 40 games, he had 6 points. If he had repeated his performance from the year prior (16 points in 40 games with with shittier linemates) he’d probably be a King right now. It’s not like the Kings didn’t give him a chance.

and one more thing

i totally agree w Quisp. TM’s system is very obviously (to me) offensively challenged. Everyone has been saying, wow, wait till next year. I Hope they’re right. Personally I’m less convinced unless changes are made. Say what you want about Lokti and Schenn. I Highly doubt both make the team as they are both centers.

Secondly, as Handzus will probably resign, with Smyth and Zus, the team risks being even slower next year than they were this year, unless DL manages to make some moves to upgrade the speed.

Also Quisp, totally on board with your post about Moller. I don’t know if you were just speculating or actually inferring something, but I remember years ago following D Briere when he was still in the minors. It took him a long time to get to the level that he’s at now.

I meant to specify

what is hopefully obvious….. that both Smyth and Zus will be a year slower than they were this year.

Ted Purcell BtN Player Card

It looks like he’s been benefiting from some pretty awesome teammates this post-season.

i haven’t really followed the lightning that closely this year but why did they wait until the playoffs to give him better linemates?

Quisp says:…Every season needs its scapegoat. Even with the Kings close to the top of the league (!), old habits die hard. I can see why people would single out Purcell, as a kind of alternative to bashing Frolov, but here’s my problem with it (well, besides the fact that Purcell appears to me to be doing everything right except putting pucks in the net): if I’m going to knock anyone for underperforming I’m going to look first to the established players with big contracts and it’s pretty obvious that Frolov, Brown, Stoll and Kopitar (since the Smyth injury) are all underperforming. It was this fact that made Parse’s performance when he was first called up so striking; Parse was playing at the level the others were supposed to be but weren’t. So Purcell isn’t the only problem or even the main problem. But people are less likely to knock Brown or Kopitar. Even though I’m pretty sure Purcell wasn’t out there for the 6-on-3 last night.

hah just found this while trying to remember who purcell’s linemates were most of that year. I remember he got a tiny shot with kopitar, as this post sites, but it didnt last unfortunately.

Purcell, Boyle, Quick's brother in law....

Well, I suppose that if you are building a team from the goalie out, Lombardi has done what he said he would do. I agree that TM smothers offensive players that aren’t of the caliber of Kopi.

I guess it means that Dean was correct, or his scouts were. Purcell=scorer. Moulson=scorer. Boyle=scorer. Next up Parse and Moller, will we hang on to them?

I think it’s time for a new coach. Not that I don’t think TM did a great job…I just think the team has changed and outgrown him. DL is not stupid. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a coaching change before next season. Fingers crossed.

I think my biggest problem with terry murray is that he is seriously risk averse and too quick to scapegoat things that are the easy excuse (i.e young players not adhering to the system, frolov being aloof, penner being fat, moller small etc.) but doesn’t really attempt to solve the wider systemic problems or even seem to attempt to look for them. It’s like his whole coaching philosophy is “don’t get fired at all costs”.

in other words, if any of you are familiar with poker, Terry Murray is a huge nit.

a wish it will probably remain

DL and TM are quite close, so I don’t see any way at all that they let TM go this off season. Especially given that they made the playoffs two consecutive years. Also, all of these things that we are commenting on, I have a hunch that DL see’s them, but is unconvinced that they are a result of short comings in the coach’s system. If they have a poor first half next year, that could change.
