Kings Depth Chart (5): Stay-at-home Defensemen
There's obviously some latitude in these categories. I could easily have labeled Muzzin, Forbort, Kolomatis or Mullen, but the truth is they're betwixt and between, as they say. My criteria for inclusion here is that the player needs at least to be able to fill the stay-at-home role. As with the previous depth-chart posts, () means they're RFA, (()) means they're UFA and [] means they're unsigned draft picks.
Rob Scuderi
- Scuderi is the gold-standard for stay-at-home d-men. Experienced, responsible, smart, calm, gets his shot through every once in a while, and is capable of making three or four spectacular saves in last seconds of game seven of the cup finals. Not for us, but what the hell.
- He's signed for two more years.
6'3", 212, shoots left
- Mitchell had a great year as Scuderi, Jr..
- He's signed for one more season.
6'4", 234, shoots right
- Bigger, slower and more prone to bone-headed penalties than Scuderi or Mitchell.
- He's got three more years on his contract.
- I also think he's the defenseman most likely to be traded.
- Although maybe that's just because I've been thinking a lot about upgrading team speed, and the idea of swapping out Greene, Kevin Westgarth and (after 2011-12) Ryan Smyth and Dustin Penner, and replacing them with Viatcheslav Voynov and/or Nicolas Deslauriers, Andrei Loktionov, Oscar Moller, Brandon Kozun (or pick your favorite road-runner) is kind of appealing.
6'2", 218, shoots left
- I think of Drewiske as padawan Scuderi, but I don't know if he'll ever rise to be a Jedi master.
- Right now, his best feature is that he can be a healthy scratch for months on end. He's got another two years on his deal.
- If Peter Harrold moves on, I can see Drewiske sticking around simply because he's a dutiful spare.
- I thought he looked great during his cup of coffee this past season, and that's not just because I said he had a good shot of making the team over a year ago. Muzzin falls into that hybrid category for me because he's big-ish, he hits heavy, he's got a nasty streak, but he's got some offensive chops, too. He is capable of playing on the power-play (or at least I think I remember him doing that at the Soo).
- With Scuderi, Mitchell, Greene, Johnson, Doughty and Martinez hogging the top six, I don't see where Muzzin fits right now, unless it's in the press box; and that seems like a waste.
- My guess is he starts in Manchester and is the first recall in the event of inj****s to any of Scuderi, Mitchell or Greene.
- But I still think a Greene trade is possible, and that would open things up a bit.
6'3", 205, shoots left
- All but forgotten by Kings fans, Campbell finally had a decent season in Manchester.
- He's RFA on 7/1.
- His prospects improved considerably when Colten Teubert was shipped off.
- He's the only really big body in the system that's got any professional experience. For that reason, I expect he'll get a new contract.
- Whether he's ever NHL-ready is anybody's guess.
6'5", 198, shoots left
- Just finished his freshman year at University of North Dakota. Had a pretty good season, they say. I only got to see him in the NCAA Final Four, and it was hard to get a sense of him there.
- He's a huge, skinny kid who plays a very balanced game.
- I don't think we have any reason to expect him in a Kings sweater for a couple more years at least.
6'4", 175, shoots left
- Also just finished his freshman year of college.
- I think he might be Matt Greene, Jr.
- As with Forbort, I don't expect him to ripen for a few years.
David Kolomatis
5'11", 195, shoots right
5'11", 180, shoots right
- Two decent, smallish two-way defensemen. They're just two very good, smart hockey players who are standing in line behind, well, pretty much everyone, and will probably play their entire pro careers in the AHL.
What I Expect
- Scuderi and Mitchell are the designated grown-ups, keeping a watchful eye on Doughty, Johnson and whoever the third speedy guy turns out to be (Martinez, Voynov, Hickey -- and Deslauriers, but not this year barring a miracle).
- Greene is the favorite uncle who pulls a nickel out of your ear and asks you to pull his finger.
- Taking a longer view, I don't think Scuderi is going anywhere for the next several years, but the fate of Mitchell and Greene has a lot to do with the progress of Muzzin.
- I can see Muzzin taking Mitchell's place in 2012.
- I can also (sort of) see Lombardi dealing Greene this summer and letting Muzzin, Hickey and Voynov fight over two spots instead of one. Not really. That just sounds like wishful thinking on my part, which I am prone to.
- It's much more likely that Lombardi is going to stick with three adults (Scuderi, Mitchell and Greene) and three kids (Doughty, Johnson and Muztinezicky).
- The defensemen in the press box? Drewiske and Muzzin? I find it hard to imagine Lombardi keeping Voynov in LA just to be a healthy scratch. Same for Hickey. But maybe he would. He did it with Schenn.

Scuderi’s Cup Final heroics were in Game 6 of that series #painfulmemories #notsosuppressedmemories
You wanna tell me that to mah face?!
I think Hickey, all things being equal, would be the top guy for the 6 spot next season. I really want Voinov to make it but I don’t see how he does with Doughty and Johnson and Hickey and Martinez better at defense. Hickey has offense potential and is better at defense and more leadership skills than Martinez (my opinion, obviously). It would be nice to have a scenario where we could have a pairing with two offensive/defensive guys (like a Bieksa/Hamhuis without the douche) and Hickey could fit that bill eventually (with Doughty?). I do love Martinez’s ability to get shots on net, though. I just realized I’m talking only about offensive prospects on your stay at home column, sorry.
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
that's the problem; it's hard to know what the right balance between offensive and stay-at-home will turn out to be
there’s a future d-corps (not this year) that could look like
Martinez/Hickey/Voynov – Doughty
Deslauriers – Johnson
Scuderi – Muzzin
but i don’t see any way for more than one of Martinez, hickey or voynov to make it. i really like martinez, but he’s the most “ordinary” of those three. voynov is spectacularly fast, and I would hate to give up on him only to regret it. hickey is easy to give up on, but i refuse. but two of those guys will get dealt, I think. when that decision is made, i have no idea.
Wait till this year.
Right On!
I whole heartedly agree with your analysis. I am a big fan also of Deslauriers too.I did see Forbort in several games, including Jr. World Cup and he certainly did not look out of place. I expect he will get some PP time next season and see how that goes. I think Muzzin is closest to making the team and Forbort in two or three more years, three if he needs AHL time. Kevin Gravel can be another Forbort and I think be one year behind Forbort.
For this coming season, I think I would agree to moving Green and just throw the doors open for two slots not just one. Competition is the best solution to solve the matter.

Quisp... posts like this are oxygen in a offseason that still has a long way to go... Thank you!
Question: Greene has a decent cap hit and could be great for a team that is rebuilding (young defenseman around). He has a great locker room personality (would not want to lose that part of him) and is an effective shut down d-man, when he stays away from stupid penalties.
If he is prime trade bait in your opinion, what are you looking for in return? What do you think is the priority as far as adding to our current roster team? Speedy left wing?
Any ideas on who you think would be good to package with him to maximize our return (prospects, roster players)?
I miss Niesy :( and LA Kings hockey… :-(
I like Greene when he doesn’t take those needless roughing type penalties. Apparently he is a good locker room presence so I doubt DL would trade him unless he was part of a package to get an impact player. He is fine for a 3rd pair defenseman and is an effective PK guy.
Don't see Green going anywhere soon.
With Poni and Zus likely gone, the remaining roster lost a whole bunch of toughness. Green brings a lot of muscle despite the penalties. Let’s face it, JJ and DD take their share of dumb penalties.
BTW, if we loose Green, who is going to fight for Doughty? Mitchell and Drewiskey tried but they are not very good at it. SO’D was awesome with the mitts but he was let go.

Maybe be a good point
Additionally I think there’s a lot to be said as far as chemistry in the defensive corps, maybe more so than offensive lines particularly in the Kings defense-first system. Not to say better players can’t or won’t make the lineup, but for Greene to be sent away, hopefully it would be for a very worthwhile return on DL’s part. Keeping doughty, scuderi, johnson, mitchell, greene, and martinez/muzzin together for another year will most likely add to their comfort of playing together.
All Good points re: Greene but we still have that log jam of up and coming defenseman so...
somebody has to go eventually…
True as far as Doughty and Johnson go stupid penalty-wise but they aren’t going anywhere. Ditto Scuds and Mitchy. Interesting to see what DL ends up doing…
yes, somebody has to go eventually.
As you said, Doughty and Johnson are fixtures. Scuderi, too. Mitchell’s there for next season at least. Green has three years. That’s five of six spots.
Martinez, Muzzin, Voynov, Hickey, Deslauriers. If all of the five “vets” stay this year, that means only one of the up-and-coming five have a shot. Deslauriers ain’t gonna be ready this fall. But the other four probably are.
Hickey could spend another year in the AHL. Muzzin probably won’t need to. Voynov? I would hate to lose him to the KHL. Will Lombardi trade him before that happens? Or trade someone else?
Put it this way. In 2012-13, pick three from this list:
Greene, Muzzin, Voynov, Hickey, Martinez, Deslauriers.
Pick three to keep, and three to trade. I choose Muzzin, Deslauriers and one of Voynov or Hickey. Trade Martinez, Greene and the other of Hickey or Voynov.
Wait till this year.
funny though
if you keep Greene, Martinez and Hickey/Voynov and trade the others, that’s not bad either.
Wait till this year.
Just picking your brain
Supposing hickey were traded today, he’s good enough to be a top 6th defenseman on another NHL team right? I don’t know too much about the prospects.

It's kinda hard for Forbort to stand out at North Dakota
With all the Frattins and Genoways of the world… He’ll take on a more substantial role next year…

I may be alone on this one but I would keep Martinez, Voynov, Hickey, and Deslauriers all over JJ and his $4.4m a year contract.
Obviously this is not what Lombardi is going to do but I think JJs contract is a pretty big risk considering that he has yet to have anything near a league average defensive season.

In spite of this I still really like watching Johnson play and he is one of my favorite Kings. It’s a very confusing paradox.
Quite possibly the only LA Kings fan living in Brooklyn, New York.
