147 Players Taken After the First Round, 1995-2010
The Kings' first pick is #49, unless Dean Lombardi plans on trading up; I would put the odds of that at about 75:25, though I would be surprised if he traded into the first round. 30-40-ish feels about right to me. I'm working on a post on which players I think might actually still be available by the time we pick, but in the meantime, here's a list of names that were selected #31 or lower, going back to 1995.
The list is sortable, by clicking on the column headers (unless it's broken; the SBN editor has been acting strange lately).

That's an awful lot of star-quality talent that didn't go in the First Round
Therefore, every NHL general manager in the last 15 years is incompetent because they passed over Keith, Chara, Richards, Fisher, et. al. when they had their first chance to pick them.

Pekka Rinne 258? That’s like… carry the one… leave the two… so many incompetent GMs!

It's not incompetence, it's conspiracy.
They porposely passed up those guys in the 1rst round just to make the Kings look foolish.
They were sitting in the alley smoking cigerettes, and thought it would be funny if they made it seem like they wanted someone, once the Kings picked them, they’d pounce on the players they really wanted, while simultaniously pointing their fingers at the Kings and laughing.
16 drafts, 147 decent-to-excellent players
Those aren’t very good odds. Don’t get me wrong. I marvel at this post because it gives us hope that useful players — even star players — can be had in later rounds. But that’s just nine players per draft year, on average.
Since 1995, there have 3,529 players chosen after the first round (not accounting for repeat draftees, such as Jarret Stoll). GMs are hitting .042 when it comes to finding diamonds in the rough. Granted, picking in the first round is no guarantee of a good NHLer, but the batting average is significantly higher — even if it’s still below the Mendoza Line.
Still, it’s a good thing Quisp didn’t try to list all the first-rounders who never made an impact in the NHL…

first-rounders who never made an impact in the NHL…
If this was a Jeopardy category, I would have my finger on the buzzer ready to blurt:
“Who is Alexandre Daigle?” and “Who is Daniel Doré??”

Daigle
Takes a beating because who was taken after him and all the drama in Ottawa. I wouldn’t even list him as the worst 1st overall ever taken (Stefan).
Daigle averaged about .5 points a game, and even in his draft class is in the top 30 of all time points.
Obviously it’s a disappointing career, but hell if he was drafted in 99 with the totals he had he would be in the top 10 in points of the 99 Draft.

Do a good job of examining the history of the value of high round draft picks versus finding a diamond in the rough, read here.

I always continue to marvel at:
Datsyuk – 171
Pavelski – 205
Zetterberg – 210
… and think “Man, when are the LA Kings gonna get LUCKY and late pick draft that incredible diamond-in-the-rough?!”
(And then I recall: "Oh … we did. Luc “Lucky” Robitaille – 171, 9th round.")
Quispie: a Re-Tweet
RT @helenenothelen: Not expecting Kings and Doughty to reach new deal anytime soon but am expecting Smyth trade to happen around weekend draft festivities.
thanks for heads-up; did you tweet it at me at @kingskoolaid?
I want Edmonton to give us their #31 pick and Ryan O’Marra for Smyth.
Wait till this year.
