Draft Day, Part 2: Open Thread
The second round and beyond: now featuring the excitement of actually having picks!
Who will Lombardi and co. draft at #49? Which prospects do you have your eye on? Will Futa and Yannetti bolster their reputation for finding late-round gems?
Come by and share your thoughts.
We'll also keep an eye on Smyth updates. Word from McKenzie is that the Brule deal has fallen though over health issues, and Tambo's head is still firmly up his ass.
Six picks total: 49th, 80th, 110th, 140th, 170th [UPDATE: traded to NSH w/ 2012 3rd rounder for #82], and 200th. Yeah, it's early. But never too early for prospect excitement.

Quisp mentioned that it was a 2012 2nd rounder, but that was a crazy day, maybe you missed it. Here’s the list at the Kings website as confirmation.

it's growing on me the more i see it on Gibson
but . . . i don’t know, it just feels weird to see, especially since it was based off the less-than-stellar black version.
i say “less-than-stellar” knowing fully well that i was lucky enough to nab a Doughty third jersey at Team LA during the 09-10 season.
You wanna tell me that to mah face?!
And there are the new whites! I don’t hate them, but that version is bland.

Here’s even more on Nick Shore.
Shore is a skillful, two-way forward that is blessed with tremendous hockey sense and great hands. He thinks the game remarkably well and possesses the ability to dictate the tempo of a game. His anticipation is very good and makes smart decisions both with and without the puck.
The young center’s hands coupled with his superb on-ice vision allow him to find open teammates and get very crisp tape-to-tape passes to them. Shore also possesses a good, active stick and does a good job of taking away lanes from opposing players.
He is strong in transition and is equally at home playing both offense and defense. Although he plays center for the University of Denver, Shore can also play on the wing. He uses his 6’0 200 pound frame quite advantageously, particularly in high traffic areas. He also brings passion and grit to his game, and doesn’t shy away from the physical side of it.
Two way center, who would have thought they would find that attractive.
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
Any thing left for 2012 ?
I think we’ve traded the 2012 #2 (Philly), the #3 (Penner deal) and another #3 (from Leafs) to Nashville for the Shore pick ?
Michael Mersch from Wisconsin

Like the Mersch pick......
Slow, but big, tough and skilled….will be a matter of playing him in the right role with the right player…..
I think it was Yannetti who said we wanted “wings with size.” Speed isn’t bad either, guys.
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
McKenzie’s final rankings had Gibson at #42 (“Good positionally, challenges the shooter, solid rebound control, decent quickness”, lacks ginormo size), Shore at #54 (“cerebral,” projects as “reliable bottom-line center with intangibles”).
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
Ginormo size is an overrated player trait these days. Cerebral is where it’s really at!

Hockey Prospectus (who had him 98th):
Michael Mersch didn’t have a great year from a counting statistics viewpoint, but his rapid physical development and how well he fit in the college game was reason for optimism. He skates at a decent level, and looks like he will be able to move with pros just fine. Mersch’s puck skills are average, although he does look uncoordinated at times and his hands shine more when he’s playing in front of the net on the power play rather than creating in open ice. He can be adequate though in regards to distributing, but I’m not sure he will be pro-average at that. His frame is already remarkably filled out for a first-time draft eligible, and he’s one of the bigger players in the NCAA as a freshman at 6’2". Mersch can be a handful to deal with in the physical areas, although his strength is not all the way there yet. There is little doubt though by the time he is 20 he will be a physically dominant college player and projects as a solid-average player in that regard in the pro game. He works hard, and all his traits point towards at least a fourth line pro, and possibly more than that if his defensive game is refined.

- — 6’3" Swedish LW Michael Schumacher. Not that I got this from the “Live Draft Coverage” of pre-taped segments.
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
I’d say Schumacher makes it 3 WTF picks for the Kings today; but if one of them eventually makes it, that’s a win. One thing was that was good to see was no smurfs; we’ve already got enough of those in the system.

Great info, thanks…..with the Euros, it’s always interesting how the scouts will describe their fantastic skating ability, scoring touch, terrific work ethic etc etc….then you see the stats, and they scored like 2 goals and 2 assists in 49 games…..I know that playing time in Europe (especially for young guys on established teams)- can be tough to come by, but you also wonder just how many times scouts could have seen these guys and are projecting them for greatness based on a couple of good tournament games……Anyway, hopefully Schumacher will someday make us all forget the legend of Jens Karlsson……
Man, Kings really wanted Shore. He seems like he could be a good value, maybe a steal.

shitty draft
Nobody to be excited about like last yeras Forbort Toffoli Weal Kitsyn Gravel now that was a draft. The third round guy is another ECHL Pelech. Gibson another Emery. Frig this draft should’ve traded all the picks have no picks at all that would be cool.
by Totentanz on Jun 25, 2011 2:36 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
Yeah, when I read about Andreoff, sounded like a Bud Holloway clone…..so I think he has 3-4 years of working his butt off in Ontario and Manchester to get a look by the Kings, just like Bud……
Wouldn’t be too down on Gibson; didn’t see anyone especially interesting drafted after him, and you can’t have enough goal tending depth, lest you forget about halcyon days of Yuka Fukufuji, Barry Brust and an ancient Sean Burke…..
Agree that this looked like average draft year for everyone; the quality really dropped off after the 9th or 10th pick….surprised that DL didn’t dump a few more picks into next year, since we have no 2nd or 3rd then…….Hopefully he can extract at least a 2012 4th rounder for Smyth to help fill out that draft.
wrong wrong wrong
This draft would have been great to see Penner take his disgusting fat body somewhere else. Package him with some picks somewhere maybe Toronto and then to see Smyth ftrade completed. Frig the picks bring in some fresh bodies for them. Gilbert Brule Gilbert Godfrey I don’t care whatever.
by Totentanz on Jun 25, 2011 3:19 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
I’d rather see Penner with the linemates he was supposed to complement, after one summer of serious conditioning, before we write him off.
I don’t think he’ll ever be fast, but it would be bad asset management not to even try to see how he pans out. There truly aren’t many LW alternatives out there, and there haven’t been for a while.
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
shit
Gagne Sturm Miettinen Cole Ponikorovsky all have more heart than that fat piece of shit. I was down on Doughty but then again Drew is 20 this guy is almost 30. Ship his fat ass out!

DL says he is working hard this summer for what it’s worth and he isn’t shy about calling players out.
I will put my money on a contract year and a full training camp with new teammates vs a 1/4 of a season without the center he was supposed to play with.
put my money
Ill put my money he friitters away another year being a healthy scratch or getting pushed to the fourth line because he’s not going to compete hard and show up every game every shift
