What About Doughty? News and Notes for July 1st
As free agency begins at noon ET/9 a.m. Pacific, here are some links and updates to ponder:
1. What have we heard about Doughty?!
There is no contract in place yet. It does not appear that one will be completed by 9. However, both sides seem interested in working out a long-term deal. Last night, we had this update from The Fourth Period:
I'm confident Kings/Doughty will get a deal done. I've spoken with both sides, neither seem concerned. Just takes time.
Consider, too, this tidbit that surfaced in a recent Mike Richards interview:
"I know Drew Doughty a little bit from playing at the Olympics with him, and he could not stop raving about LA and how much he loved it there..."
So there you go. From everything we've heard, Drew Doughty wants to remain a King. There is a risk that he will be given offer sheets, but he'd also have to sign them. A deal could take some time to be completed, but I believe it will be done.
2. Detroit's GM throws cold water on the idea of offer sheets
I've seen a lot of chatter around the web about the Detroit Red Wings possibly attempting to poach Doughty, since they have both capspace and a pressing need for a puck-moving blueliner. However, Holland nixed the idea in the press quite a while ago:
"I think it's a bit of an effort in futility because if you sign an offer sheet to a restricted (free agent) at the going rate, the team's going to match,'' Holland said after the press conference announcing Brian Rafalski's retirement. "The only way you get these players is if you pay them way beyond what they're worth. That's really not what the cap world is all about. The cap world is about finding players that play beyond what you pay them.''
It's possible that Holland could suddenly change his mind, but it's worth noting that he has never made an offer sheet in his entire tenure as Detroit's GM -- and he has offered solid reasons why.
3. Dreger says we are still in the hunt for Brad Richards
LA will go hard after Richards. Teams lining up to meet and make presentations today. Teams owners involved. Will be a feeding frenzy.
Lombardi told the LA Kings Insider that a "mid-range" deal was possible in free agency, which seemed to put us out of the running, but Dreger is a reliable source. Still, given the deep pocketbooks of the three other major bidders -- and their sheer desperation for a #1 center -- I think the Kings are a longshot. I'm fine with that. We already have the younger, more versatile, and cheaper Richards.
4. Michal Handzus may no longer be a King
[UPDATE: The 4th Period is reporting Handzus to the Flyers. McKenzie has denied this deal.]
Testing free agency makes sense for Zeus. While he has lost a step, Philadelphia (as well as other teams) could use a veteran defensive-minded specialist. The Mike Richards trade has given us a replacement heavy-lifter. However, we will never be able to replace his glorious hair.
Demand is outstripping supply; the cap (and the cap floor) just went up; everyone's about to be overpaid. Buckle up, everyone! Let the craziness begin.
This is your open thread.

so I was just messing around with BtN stats like bored nerds do and I just discovered that Willie Mitchell was seemingly the most effective penalty killer in the NHL last year.
His PK TOI/60 = 3.24 and his +/-ON/60 = -0.97. The next player with a PK TOI/60 over 3 is Brooks Orpik and his +/-ON/60 = -2.18

Yup. Over at C&B they were talking about some goalies’ SV% while on the PK seeming abnormally high, and Quick was one of them. I thought to myself, “Willie Mitchell.”

If you'll all indulge me,
please explain all the negativity headed Brad’s way? I’m trying to figure it out and I can’t.
At this point, shouldn’t we all have faith in DL’s ability to manage the cap AND keep the important pieces together?
Also, I’m not sure if any of you other than Niesy saw it, but I went over to capgeek a few days ago and put together a roster with both Richards’ that fit under the cap. Granted I didn’t account for those extra QO offers that Quisp added, but I still left appox. $350k (for wiggle room), so I have faith that DL can pull it off.
So, assuming that you’re with me thus far, the issue must be with him as a player or his injury history. Now, I get that he had a concussion last year, and I get that he’s 30 and “on the downside of his prime”. But the dude has a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe on his resume, and is far and away the top offensive UFA on the market.
To me, what was best about the Mike Richards deal was DL’s clear message to all the young guys that the time is NOW. Signing Brad Richards just hammers that point home even more. Why sign another 2nd line/3rd line (read: inconsistent) scorer, when the glaring weakness on our roster is a top 6 winger. Look at these lines!!
Penner-Kopitar-Williams
B. Rich-M. Rich-Brown
I’ll leave it at that right now. And yes, I am at work now, so please forgive me if this is a little scattered.
Btw, here was my capgeek roster. I tried to be as objective as possible: http://capgeek.com/cap_calculator/roster.php?id=2770
The thing you have to think about is that we only get one chance at adding an elite player through free agency. We have Kopitar, MRichards, Doughty, Johnson and the Jonathans. That’s an excellent core and it’ll be a cup-contending core if we add one more piece, preferably a winger. Was Hossa that piece? Yep. Kovalchuk? Absolutely. BRichards? …Maybe. He’s kind of older and he sets a limit to how long we contend (3 years). Signing him to a big deal becomes prohibitive after that. I won’t be unhappy if we signed him, in fact I’d be pretty ecstatic, but I recognize that there are risks.
All good points, RK.
And I do recognize that we only get one chance at adding that elite guy. But at the end of the day, opportunities to add these guys with his upside don’t come around very often, you’re lucky if 2 pop up in one offseason. Further, the younger guys usually haven’t made their fortune yet, and are therefore less likely to take a smaller contract, meaning it may not even be possible to sign them.
IMO, the Mike Richards move puts the Kings at a crossroads. Mike has always been a winner, and he was in the finals two years ago. He wants to win NOW. Brad Richards is 30, he wants to win NOW. If DL is able to sign Brad Richards, the mentality of the entire team shifts. Here’s a guy who is leaving significant $$ on the table to win, and he thinks these young guys can do it. Now the message to the young guys is no longer, yeah we’re good, but we’re also a very young team that is learning/gaining experience. It becomes: THIS is our year guys, look at these top players who believe in us. Let’s put in that extra offseason work, let’s get that contract signed (Drew!), etc.
Conversely, if DL signs that LW2/3 hybrid, you destroy a significant amount of that momentum built by the Mike Richards’ deal because the offense is still not where it needs to be to win a cup, and we’re still playing that waiting game. Yet again, the message becomes, “we’re improving, but we’re still a move away, let’s keep developing and improving and we’ll see how far we can get.” That’s not creating a winning culture.
So, while it always comes down to personal preference (there are no black n’ white choices), and even if it’s a move that comes with some risk, I am of the opinion that the pros outweigh the cons when you consider the psychological impact this move will have on the rest of the team. (I hope Quisp doesn’t rip apart my rhetoric here, he’s so good at that. I hope my message is coming through: I want the Kings to win now & I’ll take one cup with Brad Richards and 3 solid years of being a top contender over playing the waiting game for that ideal piece which may or may not ever come)
Yet again, the message becomes, "we’re improving, but we’re still a move away, let’s keep developing and improving and we’ll see how far we can get." That’s not creating a winning culture.
I strongly disagree with this. The blockbuster trade for MR already made a big statement that says quite the opposite. BR could work on LW but he isn’t the only option. We can still trade. And frankly, if Scott Parse gets dealt somewhere else and pulls a Moulson on us, I will tear my hair out. We will be fine either way.
Our window with Kopi, Doughty, Bernier/Quick and Richards is a very long one. It’s only beginning.
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
I agree that the MR trade makes that statement, but I fear that signing that LW2/3 hybrid and hoping Parse can fill the role for the entire season sends the opposite message.
And I also share your feelings re: Parse going Moulson on us, but, as I see it, Parse still has a place on our team with or without Richards.
Put another way: we’re going to sign an LW one way or another, right? So the options, as I see them, are: (1) sign LW2/3 hybrid. Hope that “hybrid” + Parse = significant production upgrade over 2010-11 Smyth + LW3. Or, (2) sign BR. BR + Parse (as LW3) isa potential offensive juggernaut. Add that to our top 4 defense (goals against) and a “cup winning goalie”, along with three very responsible 2-way Centermen anchoring those juggernauts, and… we got a stew going baby!
I’ve been traveling all morning, and so am late to the thread. But I’ll take a stab at this.
I don’t think it’s negativity toward BRichards as a hockey player, it’s negativity toward he’s likely to cost. He is far and away the biggest name on the UFA market this summer (unless you count Jagr — say what?), and as such, the bidding for him is likely to go quite high. Yes, he’s a valuable hockey player, but there is a point at which even the best player is overpriced, especially in a salary cap environment. I think that’s what people have been reacting to — the fear that whomever wins the BRichards auction, the winning bid will be an overpayment.
That being said, it looks like the Kings are basing their offer on more than raw $, which reassures me: “We may not offer you the most money, but here’s all the other stuff we can offer you.” I trust Lombardi not to get caught up in a bidding war and lose his mind. He has the will of iron, bless him.

Question: Did you get any type of timetable from Brad or the agents?
"No, but just seeing the way they’re going about this, this is not Kovalchuk. He is a very smart kid, with some very smart agents. They are well-organized and their thoughts are together. My guess is this is not going to take long, for them to make a decision. They’re not leveraging anyone. I admire the way they’ve done it. I am appreciative of the amount of time they allowed us to have."
this should settle things down a little:
He has a lot of choices, probably offers that are going to be better than ours, but I definitely think we have him thinking.
The Kings know they’re going to get outbid monetarily; they’re hoping the desire to win a Cup outweighs that. It’s probably a dumb idea but it worked for Hossa.
Yeah — I think the vast majority of Kings fans already resigned themselves to the fact that he was signing elsewhere. Then we got the magic prize of Mike Richards out of the blue. If BR happens, cool, if not, we’re already vastly improved. This free agency summer is so different.

Dean Lombardi made one of the biggest trades since the lockout for the Selke-nominated, 60+ point-scoring gold-medal winning captain of Team Canada, and her reaction was to wonder if DL “knew the time to win was now.”
I know the media is crazy and homerish in other hockey markets, and I appreciate that she doesn’t get into that, but giving credit where it is due would lend her editorial comments more credibility.
