Richards' Choices

He said he wanted to go somewhere to compete for a Cup. But they always say that, don't they? Pretending that he means it, let's run down the candidates:

  • Lightning (Yzerman says they're out)
  • Rangers (rumored not to have the highest bid)
  • Kings (made a nice video)
  • Flames (if he signs with the Flames he's dumber than Ilya Kovalchuk)
  • Flyers (the Flyers appear to be in the throes of madness right now)
  • someone out of left field?

I just read that Richards' relationship with Jay Feaster is playing a big part in the Flames' pitch. Does that cancel out the fact that he'd be one of the younger players on the team?

Why would NY be scratched out? They are still the top destination.

Calgary is just being used to get more from NY, just like LA last year with Kovalchuk.

This is my thought. Why are the Rangers out? He knows/likes Tortorella. Plus, East coast factor. Pacific time zone traditionally has a hard time attracting big free agents due to the travel burdens. And he has a home in PEI.

Only Richards knows what he values. I say NY’s still in.

Though it does occur to me — is Calgary getting its tires pumped bz. it’s the Canadian media? I’m trying to wrap my head around that.

I agree...

I believe if the Kings get last call, Brad Richards will be a King.

by BakoCA on Jul 1, 2011 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Iginla called Richards and asked him to come. To Canadians, it’s like the Pope called him and asked him to come to Rome.

The West Coast is the Best Coast.

by RudyKelly on Jul 1, 2011 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Uhhhh

And Gretzky spoke to Richards about playing in LA…

To Canadiens, that’s like God cutting the pope’s phone line and hijacking the conversation.

Let’s see. The greatest player in hockey history… or Jerome Iginla?!?!

Wasn’t Toronto (although not a cup contender) supposed to be in the mix? I thought I read that somewhere… I think you gotta keep in mind who went there and presented and who just called it in. I think there’s more value in that than some may think.

Toronto thought so much of Brad Richards that their GM decided to spend the day in Kandahar.

That makes sense to me. Money, after all, is one way of expressing how much a team wants a player. But it’s only one. And all ways feed the player’s ego. A lot of times, with pro athletes, it’s not about the money as money, it’s about the money as a marker of status, an ego thing.

cf. the rumors about Doughty cited by Quisp in his next post, although I’m not entirely sure how much to credit them.

From TSN TweetVille:

Calgary is getting a lot of pub..for good reason, but NYR, LA and Toronto are still very much in the mix.

I want an elite athlete to come out one day and say, “You know what, I want the biggest payday possible and I don’t give a rat’s ass where I find it.” I would like that person forever, even if he were a total A-hole.

Yup, at least give them points for honesty. :-/

When Hossa did something similarly honest and signed with DET for a year and a smaller contract than he would’ve gotten on the open market, he was vilified by a hell of a lot of people out there for being a heartless mercenary piece of shit. For chasing his dream instead of getting the big payday.

I never understood that, and largely think that the people of that opinion can fuck off. But the point is, when people are honest about that kind of thing, they tend to get absolutely crucified for it.

Isn’t that basically what Kovalchuk said last year? “10 mil a season or bust” and all.

by Garrett79 on Jul 1, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, but he never actually came out and said it. I’m talking full disclosure here…

Some in the Philly media are saying Brad Richards is Plan A with Simon Gagne the backup…we’ve actually got cap space left (assuming Schenn is sent down to the AHL, Shelley waived and Laperriere put on LTIR) to make a decent signing because of the Versteeg salary dump.

Simon Gagne may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, he will always be a Philadelphia Flyer.

ESPN reports that its down to 4, Flames, Kings, Rangers, and Toronto. If you were Brad Richards and looking at those 4 teams, which one do you think would give you the best chance to win the cup, where you become the guy to put the team over the edge? I like our chances.

by Olympichero03 on Jul 1, 2011 9:14 PM PDT reply actions

Boo - the Flames are better than you think

Calgary’s strength as a team is hidden because of the absolute horrific start they had last year.

In 2011 (not 2010) they had a sustained run as one of the strongest teams. In 2011 only they had a top 5 offense and top 5 PP and were a very strong team over a sustained period.

This is just since the all-star break and the final 10 games they stumbled bad because Morrison and Moss both took injuries, bottom line is that if they had even had just 5 wins in that horrific stretch of losses from Oct to Dec they would have finished 4th in the West.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/stats/byteam?cat=splits&conference=NHL&year=season_2010&cut_type=142&sort=404

They were losing to the Oilers, the Blue Jackets, you name it, lots of terrible losses in those three months. Just 5 wins though and they finish 4th overall.

Not saying Richards is going to sign in Calgary but they really are not thattttt bad. The Kings are easily the team that will take him to Cup though, I will give you that but the Flames may give him the most money and term…

by Mitch Smith on Jul 1, 2011 9:51 PM PDT reply actions

Just to underline the hole the Flames were in last Dec – they were dead last in the West behind even the Oilers. It was an absolute train wreck to watch. Darryl Sutter was rumored to be interfering with what coaching wanted to do and forcing Stajan and Hagman up to the 2nd line.

Once Darryl was fired the Flames instantly started their run. The rumor was that Brent Sutter as coach was finally allowed to do his job, the results were one of the top 5 performing teams over 2011 part of the season. But it was too late, just too much of a hole had been dug.

And edit above, they actually only needed 3 more wins to finish fourth in the West and I know for a fact their was 5 games for certain in 2010 that they really should have won.

by Mitch Smith on Jul 1, 2011 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing Richa
rds has to decide is whether he wants to carry a team to win the Cup. He wont have to do that with the Kings but will for the most part with Calgary, Toronto, and New York. At this stage of his career where he has already won a Cup, the best chance to win another might be an important factor in his decision. Of the four teams, the Kings would be the most favored to win, even without him. With him, I would think they would be elevated to one of if not the favorite to win it all (assuming Doughty signs).
