Free Agency Day 2 Open Thread: Bob Miller Is Safe!
According to Dreger, Brad Richards has landed where everyone thought he would: New York, New York. The deal is apparently 9 years at a $6.5M AAV. The Kings made a great pitch in their bid to amass 3 number one centers, but were probably beat out with that final sell job by Wade Redden.
Fortunately for the Kings, having Kopitar and Mike Richards already set to go as a one-two punch down the middle made this attempt more of a luxury than anything.
So: what's next? Doughty? Trades? Gagne? Luring Palffy out of retirement? Discuss!

Miettinen would be in TM’s doghouse as soon as he got off the plane

He’s a pretty good defensive player, I think Murray would actually like him. He’s Finnish, that’s the most North American of European.
I like Mittens.
But Langenbrunner — weren’t there rumors about him being some sort of prob in the locker room? This could be entirely wrong, I am murky on specifics.
In Dinglebarn We Trust -- JftC
He didn’t get along with Lamoriello and was uncomfortable losing ice time as he got older. Sounds like a captain that was loved by the guys in the room and villified by those outside it. Hey, that sounds familiar…
I don’t know, apparently Smyth was a good locker room guy and then asked for a trade too. Who the fuck knows. At least Langenbrunner knows Brown and Johnson. Scuderi and Greene too, maybe.
We can all chip in and have a palffy pizza party

Palffy
cause he’s da shit. Maybe get Luc to lace em up on more time
In all honesty I’m thinking Gagne for a year. Then the Kings can try and get Parise next year and we can go through this again
Simon Gagné. Maintenant. And maybe the Dodgers can bring back closer Éric Gagné from retirement.
Gagné means “won” in French btw.

Worn-out Lacrosse ball? That in itself also sounds quite dirty imo.

Foolheardy
It would have been dumb for Dean to pay Richards this much, this long. When he is in his late 30’s he will have a 6.5 mil cap hit (if the same system is in place then), and be a liability.
People will criticize Dean for not getting Richards, but it is hard to compete with teams that make stupid deals.
Move on. But don’t use this loss to justify paying Doughty 10 million or whatever a year. Still need to pay other players for a competitive team.
Yeah, the term is pretty much nuts. No way Richards is going to justify that much money/cap hit when he’s closing in on 40. In fact, he’ll probably be overpriced halfway through the contract.
it is hard to compete with teams that make stupid deals.
Indeed it is. Sigh.

You guys know we were offering the exact same deal? Ours was probably just more heavily front-loaded.
Shorter term, though, right? 7 years instead of 9, or did I get that wrong?
Those last two years make some difference. It would be harder to trade him once he loses his mojo with, say, 4 years left rather than 2.

Gagne
It does not please me to say it but sign him to a big one year deal or a softer two year deal and wish for the best. Keep kicking the tires on David Booth and wait for things to shake out over the course of the summer, saving $$$ for a much deeper/younger UFA class in 2012.
Under no circumstances should DL consider Tim Connelly.
Agree
And agree and agree. And by this time next year the Kings will be snubbed by a few free agents but we can snag one. Maybe. Ah who am I kidding
and please DL for the love of all that is holy don’t even think of Connelly

WOOOO.
Scott Parse is probably singing hosannas. Let’s see. Backup plans. 1. Kitsyn? Maaaybe. 2. Finding an ex-Blackhawk and swapping him to Tallon for David Booth. Then invest in therapy sessions for Booth and Richards. 3. Trading for someone we haven’t thought of.
There’s also my dog (great paw-eye coordination, needs to work on his skating). He’s really loyal and could work out on the cheap. There are rumors that he’s all about the Beggin’ Strips, but those are overblown.

I hate to advocate a player who was dismissed by such great franchises as Florida and Atlanta/Winnipeg
But how about Niclas Bergfors. Hockey’s future says this about him:
Bergfors is a well rounded player, and is more than willing to compete hard at both ends of the rink, a trait that is quite important for a player that gets drafted into the Devils organization. Bergfors sees the ice very well, possessing above average hockey sense that keeps him one step ahead of everyone else. He is a responsible defensive player and is not afraid to play physical style of game.
His overall offensive skill set is impressive as Bergfors has great speed, agility and stick handling ability. Add in the fact that he is tough to knock off the puck and you have a player that is able to create a lot for his teammates and for himself in the offensive zone. Bergfors is equally adept at setting up as he is finishing as he has a good shooting arsenal and touch around the goal.
While Bergfors is blessed with an enormous amount of natural skill, he must improve his work ethic and desire not just on a game to game basis, but a shift to shift basis. The talent is there, but he must compete harder and show more consistency.
Sounds like someone the Kingscould take a chance on for a bottom 6 role… And I am sure he would be cheap,

I’m always torn about guys like that. You think, “He got cut away by teams like Atlanta and Florida… but there’s a reason teams like Atlanta and Florida suck…”
He’d probably get benched by Murray anyway.
It’s kind of sad that we have to evaluate free agents not by who is the best but by who would get yelled at least but here we are.

Before yesterday
really didn’t want Richards. Came around to it at work, and really thought we had a chance as sort of a dark horse/final piece of the puzzle guy.
Did we ever find out what the Kings offer was?
Whatever dude.
Yeah this is where I was too... Didn't want, oh wait would be nice, oh-well
And chasing Richards had the added side effect of not overpaying for any of the 2nd tier guys.
Plus I was always trying to get my head around the fact that Brad Richards is more of a passer, we have too many of those already. We need finishers.
Washington is close to the cap with Alzner to sign. Try to trade for Semin? We have no draft picks, does Washington need defensive prospects?

I know people said don’t bring this up but what does it say that the Kings went “all in” and still couldn’t attract the best free agent to a young team on the cusp of a cup for more money to Sunny Southern California…It has to be pointed out!
I think it should be also pointed out that Brad Richards has a strong familiarity and comfort level playing for John Tortorella that he certainly doesn’t have with Terry Murray.

Well, it sounds like the Rangers’ offer was slightly more valuable. Not decisively, but in a tiebreaker sort of way. So, strictly speaking, it was the more lucrative offer.
I do think that the NHL is still a league with a strong Eastern bias. The teams with the most history are almost all east of the Mississippi (can’t recall if Chicago is actually east of the Mississippi), so that’s where the teams that kids are mostly likely to idolize are. Not saying that’s right or fair, but that’s kind of how it is.
It will take more winning teams from out West to change that (the Ducks’ one Cup and Colorado’s Sakic-Forsberg-Roy years are a start, but not enough), but it can change. And I think perception of the Kings is slowly changing, too. Last season, they started getting more respect from observers around the league. In sports, admiring “tradition” is just another way of saying that you want to back the strong horse, and people are starting to see that the Kings could become a strong horse very soon.
It’s all about the prestige that comes with winning over a period of time. I think the Dodgers’ winning 4 (almost 5) NL pennants and 3 World Series in their first 8 seasons in LA did a lot for the MLB on the West Coast.

Ok…I know I said Gagne in Mad Libs, as long as it didn’t go above 3.5, but the more I think about this the more potential problems I see.
For one, even though he said in an interview that the Kings never put in an offer for him last summer, and therefore he didn’t refuse to waive his clause for them, he did express a decided preference for the East (because of travel). As is typical. You either have to trade or massively overpay to lure talent to the Pacific time zone; then they get to like it out here, and are more apt to re-sign.
For another, there’s the concussion/injury risk. I know there isn’t a lot of talent left. But this just makes me even more an advocate of Team Parse.
