Shea Weber, Drew Doughty & Market Value " S U R L Y & S C R I B E L.A. Kings Hockey Blog
Shea Weber received an award of $7.5 million for one season. That makes him the highest paid defenseman in the league. For one season. That does not establish "market" value for top defensemen who seek contracts for more than a season, anymore than Surly getting lucky with a hot, drunk, 20 something year old blonde who is angry at her ex boyfriend, on one random night establishes his target market for the rest of his potential scores.
Surly, having enjoyed the company of the hot, drunk, twenty-something angry-at-her-ex-boyfriend blonde, might well decide to hold out till he gets a similar deal long-term, no matter how much his friends counseled him to the effect of "you've got to be f-ing kidding me."
Also, in this analogy, Surly needs to believe he is much hotter and younger than the ex-boyfriend.

I think
that the two situations are not entirely comparable. This is only a one year contract for Weber. That does not mean Drew should get the same for several years. Remember that management is taking a greater risk with a longer contract.
Reverse
On a short term deal Drew would make less, on a longer deal drew would make more. Remember Drew is only 21, hasn’t reached his potetial or the UFA age yet. A long term contract would cut into years he could be an UFA and demand even more. Dean said in the interview after the Mike Richards press conference that he could be comfortable making Drew the highest paid King if the terms were right. He said if Drew gave up some UFA years he could be more flexable that way.
actually, i think it's a little bit of both
drew likely wants and lombardi doesn’t want a four year contract, that being the one that takes him right up to earliest possible UFA status. i would think there is almost nothing that would make lombardi do a four year deal, not even drew agreeing to take less than $5MM per year. but shorter than four and longer than four the numbers go up.
Wait till this year.
Is he pulling his wang out and waving it around the bar?
…Seriously, does that work? I’m willing to give it a shot.
That sounds like the start of a really funny Islanders joke.
So Garth Snow and Mike Milbury walk into a bar…

Of course Weber's deal is relevant.
I don’t think Drew will get 7.5 on a 1 or 2 year deal but on a longer term contract his agent could ask for that in year 3 or 4. Drew is only 21 so if he signs a 10 year deal he is not going to make 1 mil the last 3 year of the contract. Since he hasn’t reached his potential I don’t think it should be front loaded, but end loaded. Say he get a 10 year 7.37 cap hit: 5.8, 5.9, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5. In 10 years 9.5 will be a good deal. Now Weber’s contract can turn that 5.8 into a 6.5. Drew’s agent can say OK he isn’t asking 7.5 but a million less……
