Eye Catching Headline for Catty Doughty News Clipping

Wednesday skate update " LA Kings Insider
– A handful of players who are considered more veteran AHL guys are given stalls in the Kings’ locker room. The stall between Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene is being used by Viatcheslav Voynov. Since 2008, it has been occupied by Drew Doughty.

I guess that's not as mean as giving #8 to Andrei Loktionov.

Colin Farrell wants too much money. You get me now? Dabney, he unearths a “discovery.” New kid, works for cheap. He flies you out, high profile. Parties, screen tests, detective lessons, all of it. You were just being used to shave a couple million off Colin Farrell’s price tag.

Interesting that the line-up tonight at Staples includes all the players that could potentially be the 6th defenseman: Voynov, Drewiske, Muzzin, and Hickey.

The realization that the Kings might come away with overspending on JJ based on the hope he might be something more than he is instead of locking up DD based on what Doughty has already proven is driving me a little insane.

JJ is making more than Z. Michalek, Matt Carle, Letang, Mitchell, or Scuderi. Based on the hope he will be a top pairing guy. But I don’t understand it’s a cap world.

That was kind of lame for Rich to include that. Weird, they put a rookie defenseman next to two of the King’s most well adjusted veteran defensemen? They’re clearly sending a message to Drew.

But you raise a good question. Is that kind of anecdote fair game or does it fall under the “locker room is sacred” header?

It’s certainly something that I could see a lot of hockey writers turning into some speculative blurb in the next day or so given the lack of any new news on the Doughty front.

what exactly?

How do you call BS on that theory. Evidence is evidence. It’s not like they won the cup and then decided it might be fun to change things around by sending away Byuflien, Andrew Ladd, Niemi and I can’t remember who else. Pretty sound evidence if you ask me that faffing about with the cap does indeed have consequences.

It also seems reasonably clear that in I don’t know how long, Quick, Bernier, Clifford and maybe one or two other players will be up for new contracts. A) There is a reality to this whole thing and B) No one knows how that will all evolve with the next CBA.

by number 6 on Sep 21, 2011 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Evidence is evidence? I see no Huet or Campbell on this roster. JJ is overpaid but not by as much as Campbell was for a second pairing D, though I admit Campbell is much better at his current job than JJ is.

We have a prospect pool. What for, if not bringing in guys on the cheap?

What long term contracts do we have on the books tying our hands besides Kopitar, JJ, and Mike Richards? JJ is the only truly questionable one. I don’t know if we can trade him.

Patrick Kane-6.3
Jonathan Toews-6.3
Marian Hossa-5.275
Patrick Sharp-3.9
Seabrook-5.8
Keith-5.53

All well under the 6.8 that Doughty turned down (I would say all but Seabrook’s, Kane’s and Toew’s contracts are bargains, with the other 3 just about right (Kane, Toews) to a little high (Seabrook)) and they still had to blow it up.

Yeah it does. They still have Bolland, but they used to have Bolland and Ladd. They have no replacement for Byfuglien. They also need to replace Campbell and Brouwer now. Frolik, Stalberg and Olesz might be good, but they haven’t proved to be as good as the other guys already were. I can’t see anyway you think they have more depth now than when they won the Cup.

For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.

by Nut on Sep 22, 2011 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not saying they have more depth than when they won the Cup. I’m saying they now have more depth than what they had after the blowup last year.

The severity of the hangover could have been lessened with some better decision making and advanced planning. They’re probably wasting 1-2 prime years of their core players while they re-group and get back on their feet. But they do have their core and an improved prospect pool now. It shouldn’t be their only kick at the can.

But my main point is that it was not the decision on one contract alone which caused the capocalypse. It was the culmination of many, many factors: every decision on every contract they had, the rapid development of Toews and Kane, the bonuses achieved, and Keith’s contract also coming due all in the same year.

I think it is a better allocation of cap resources to spend $7MM on an all-around top pairing D-man who we know can handle tough minutes rather than promote JJ in his place at a cap savings of $2.7MM. If JJ had thrived defensively on the second pairing, I might think differently. But as it is, he has an easier job without being as good at it. Overpayment on contracts like JJ’s is something they also have to be wary of.

Dinglebarnin' It JftC

by Niesy on Sep 22, 2011 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

If Keith had been the one with the $7.14 cap hit, they would have kept him.

You can sign Keith to the largest contract in franchise history (still cap bending) and get Toews and Kane to take 5 year deals (OMG where have I heard that term before) when you’re already a contender and heading toward an actual capocalypse caused by overpaying secondary players whom you plan to shed.

I’m asking anyone to prove we’re about to head to a Chicago bust up if we sign Doughty for $7 instead of $6.8. Really. I have an open mind. Right now I just cann’t see it.

Dinglebarnin' It JftC

by Niesy on Sep 21, 2011 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Point is, they didn’t manage the cap, and they were screwed. They overpaid for Campbell and Huet. Granted, we’ll want to keep Doughty and he’s one of our main players, but we don’t want to not be able to keep other guys because he wants too much either.

For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.

by Nut on Sep 21, 2011 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm with Neisy on this, It doesn't make sense.

So you say the difference between keeping players, and not, is the difference between 6.8 and 7 mill?

I’m still trying to figure out how we can’t make that work, unless you go off the premise that salaries might skyrocket, or that the Kings might not be able to manage that difference 5 years from now.

The Kings might manage just fine. Players might not even look at DD as a measuring stick for their salaries. The Kings might not resign players just like they did this summer. The Kings might have plenty of time to find the money from other places.

Is DD’s salary the only place to save 200,000 thousand dollars?

Absolutely. LOL

Nothing wrong with questioning what’s happening on the way.

by defrim65 on Sep 21, 2011 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions

it has nothing to do with money in the narrow sense you're defining it.

It’s like this. You’re dating the hottest chick in the gene pool. You want to get married. She wants just to fuck for a few years and then decide. Some people are okay with this. Others aren’t.

It could be great just to have hot sex with the hot girl before you both get married to other people. Or it could suck. Because maybe you’ll still be in a good place in the future…or maybe you won’t. But she will be. Because as hot as she is now, she’ll be hotter at 25.

And yes, you’re also haggling about how much you spend on her while you’re in the holding pattern, but that would matter less if she would say “I do.”

by Quisp on Sep 21, 2011 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Behind every hot chick is a guy who's tired of fucking her.

But like all guys he thinks that once he’s fucked her she’ll still be willing to fuck him a year from now, two years from now, three, four, and so on. Not only fuck him, but do the same hot little numbers that she did the first year he knew her, really did during the second year, but kinda got bored with over the past year.

Maybe she’ll wanna keep fucking him after five years, maybe not. But we have a slight kink in the arrangement. There’s another hot chick on the shelf who gives a mean blow job — one that just gets better from year to year — and who has already said, “I do.” That chick may go for some other swinging dick at the same time that chick number one is supposed to make up her mind whether to live in our pants or mouse around elsewhere.

These contract negotiations, after all, are about relationships</em. It’s hard to take sides or give advice. But one thing I’ve learned in my experiences of the Wonderful World of Pussy — a single cunt-hair is strong enough to pull a battleship.

That is my considered wisdom on the Drew Doughty debate.

What if the girl loves your junk, but doesn’t want you to tade her in, in a few years for a younger chic. Maybe just move in together for a few years just to see how it goes. Why get married now just to get divorced later?

Maybe the insecure guy says “No! either we get married now, or fuck off”, but most guys would be happy to have the hot chic giving it up for a few years, and will make her fall in love later.

by yoshinny on Sep 22, 2011 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions

The issue also becomes where do you draw the line? It’s only an extra $200,000 but then its just another $250,000 to 7.25 and isn’t Drew really good and worth that. And now we are close to Stamkos’ contract and what’s an extra 250,000 to bring it to 7.5 just like he got… You have to draw the line somewhere and DL has chosen 6.8 (according to reports)

I think he would be willing to go higher if Doughty is willing to commit to the team for longer though as Quisp says below he wants his huge payday now but still get all the flexibility to go get a bigger contract wherever he wants in five years.

The other thing that DL mentioned about the Chicago situation is that it isn’t just $200,000 for Doughty, it becomes 200,000 here and 100,000 there for an extension and all of a sudden thats a couple million in space that could have been used to bring in a solid third line guy that could have been key to winning and now you can’t fit him in or now you have to trade someone a couple years down the line to get under the cap.

by GoKings09 on Sep 21, 2011 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

But DD does not want more than 5 years. Its not about throwing out an extra 200k+. DD wants only 5 years so he can get bank ASAP as a FA. DL wants a couple of FA years, thats the hang up.

I understand cap management. A more adult approach would be to say “In a cap era, you want to get as much value from every contract you can, so you can build a better team.”

What I don’t understand is this insulting notion that all contracts have to be discounts or the whole thing will go BOOM.

It’s like yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater. Or “Eat your vegetables, or the monsters will come after you.” It’s inane.

well, this is the first time in this entire saga i've heard the comparison to Chicago's cap hell

Chicago got really lucky (or maybe they were good at planning ahead, i don’t know) that they could keep Patrick Sharp in the aftermath of the Cup run. everyone kept thinking that Sharp was definitely on the way out, but Chicago saved its own ass by not sending him away.

i don’t remember. who was gone from Chicago? i can only think of Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, and Antti Niemi.

i’m just trying (and failing) to keep my head straight thinking of how the comparison applies at all: Chicago’s “problem” was that in the same season, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Duncan Keith were all due new deals with huge raises (the former two coming off ELCs). So long as Kopitar and Doughty and whoever else become major core players have cheap contracts that don’t expire in the same offseason, Lombardi can easily avoid that problem.

i can understand the fear behind a bust-up because i don’t think the Kings are as well-equipped as the Blackhawks were to deal with any potential cap blow-ups at forward like the Blackhawks dealt with. but i also can’t see how a situation like this unfolds for the Kings unless Lombardi creates this problem himself.

also: i just had a thought. what if Lombardi is looking to pay him not-as-much-as-Doughty-is-reportedly-asking-for so that when Doughty gets another raise in his contract after this next one, that next contract doesn’t get ridiculously astronomical? e.g. Doughty signs for 8 years at $6.9mil per now. that puts him at 29 when the contract expires. so now (assuming market conditions for players are similar to now which is, of course, incredibly stupid to assume, but please, bear with me) Lombardi can offer, say, $10mil per without looking ridiculous or like a low-baller. otherwise, if he offers 7 years at $7.5mil now, Doughty can possibly expect a minimum of $11mil or $12mil per at the end of that contract . . .

you know what? ignore that before i trip over myself even more.

You wanna tell me that to mah face?!

But even given JJ’s faults, he has numerous years of NHL experience. It might be a stretch to assume all those guys are gonna fly. True, probably they all would, but in terms of right now, I don’t know if they’re ready to cast off JJ yet. But you’re right in the points you’re making before, JJ is a bit overpaid, and if one of those guys can take his spot, it might be better to go long term with them and make JJ a deal for someone else or trade for assets.

I don’t think Murray will listen to my Stoll/Loktionov/Toffoli-Lewis idea. I think Tyler will go back to the 67s. Which will be okay. And we’re likely to see something like

penner/kopitar/williams
gagne/richards/brown
clifford/stoll/parse
moreau/lewis/richardson-westgarth

loktionov is more likely to make it than toffoli, and i don’t see where he goes either.

by Quisp on Sep 21, 2011 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Those are the lines I had in mind when Moreau was acquired. However, I now think that Richardson is making a case for the RW3 position, and Parse is not helping himself much.

I never was a big Parse fan, just haven’t seen what Dean sees in the kid yet. still, I’d rather look at a 4th line of Lewis/Lokti/Parse to have fun out there after Kopi/Richards played the tough minutes, but Murray will probably feel more comfortable with Moreau/Lewis/Westgarth.

They’ll probably want to keep Parse around, as an insurance policy in case Gagné gets injured.

Parse has some rust. He’ll find his groove, but I bet it takes a few months. I’d be shocked if he gets his timing back before the Kings get back from their trip to Europe, and even more shocked if he gets it while camp is still underway. I suspect he will get it back completely, but it will take time.

If he shows flashes of brilliance before camp is over, I’d be satisfied that he’s on his way.

by defrim65 on Sep 22, 2011 3:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, Parse has played so few games over the last couple of years that you have to expect a fair amount of rust on him. I just hope this hasn’t permanently set him back, since he’s getting to the age when you’re no longer a prospect, you’re either a proven player or you’re not. At 27, he should be reaching his peak.

A big question is, which players can be scratched a lot and not hurt their development (and play well when called upon)?

Westgarth, Lewis, Richardson, Moreau, Hunter, Parse are all scratchable. Toffoli and Loktionov aren’t. On D, Drewiske (and probably Muzzin) is scratchable, Hickey and Voynov aren’t (although I sometimes think, and have argued, that Hickey would be better off in the Drewiske press box role than in Manchester).

Penner – Kopitar – Williams
Gagne – Richards – Brown
Parse – Stoll – Lewis
Clifford – Loktionov – Richardson
(Moreau, Westgarth)

Scuderi – Voynov
Mitchell – Johnson
Hickey – Greene
(Martinez)

I think the only way that happens is if he’s RW2 with Richards and Gagne, moving brown down with Stoll and Clifford. Probably not going to happen though, although I love that 3rd line.

Went to the game at Staples.

-Drooling over Loktionov. He seems to have gotten stronger on his feet. Still very creative; made a couple of moves and passes that had my section ooohing and ahhhing. Unless there is an injury (or TM is ok to bench Lewis), I don’t think there is room for him since the team apparently wants him to stay at center. But he’s going to be a fun player to watch when he eventually gets a regular spot.

-Voynov is bigger than I thought. He’s no pylon though and has great offensive intuition.

-JJ was hit and miss. Made some nice rushes up the ice but had some ugly turnovers, none which lead to a goal. He also had a sequence in the second where he blocked two shots and a pass in the same shift. Inconsistent but not bad.

-Parse was invisible. Nothing he did really stood out.

-The first Coyote goalie (Pogge I think) was unbelieveable in the first and second periods. Kings basically pressured the entire first period, badly outshooting the Coyotes but Pogge made some crazy saves.

-Brown and Richards have some decent chemistry going, considering this is their first game together. Richardson didn’t look out of place but I’m really looking forward to see how the play with Gagne.
