(Almost) All the Kings' (Defense) Men

According to Hammond, Andrew Campbell, Thomas Hickey and Viatcheslav Voynov are all on the ice this morning. Nicolas Deslauriers was sent to Manchester in the first batch of cuts. Jake Muzzin is out (for how long, nobody knows) with a neck issue. Drew Doughty is still without a contract. That leaves us with, by my count, ten defensemen:

Willie Mitchell - Voynov

Jack Johnson - Rob Scuderi

Alec Martinez - Matt Greene

Hickey - Davis Drewiske

Campbell

(Muzzin)

  • Either I'm just bored with Drewiske, or he looks worse than either Voynov or Hickey at this point. I fully admit I could be wrong.
  • It looks to me like Voynov has a spot...
  • ...and Hickey might.
  • I'm glad Campbell is getting a longer look this year, though I have zero awareness of him in this pre-season.
  • Lombardi seems to like to reward great camps, which makes me think that Voynov and Hickey will stick around longer than Muzzin.
  • Maybe Lombardi is trying to figure out whether either of Muzzin or Campbell could replace Drewiske.
  • Two, maybe three, of these ten will be cut this week. Most likely: Muzzin and Campbell?

I didn’t really like what I saw from Voynov and Hickey yesterday, but I think Voynov played better overall. I think the problem is that they both looked kind of timid. I can’t recall either of them ever pinching to keep the puck in the offensive zone, and Voynov seemed to hesitant to take a shot. Hickey’s play seemed less effective to me because his breakout passes were just so bad. In fact, most of his passes seemed bad since he telegraphed them so much.

Maybe I’m just unhappy because almost nothing went right yesterday.

I had too high of expectations since we had a largely NHL team.

I liked their play yesterday. I think Voynov pinched often enough. I’m done with Drewiske. He hasn’t gotten any better over the last 3 years from what I can tell. My only concern is having Voynov or Hickey sit.

Johnson, Scuderi, Greene, Mitchell, and Martinez all played well last year and aren’t likely to lose their spot. That leaves one spot open, Drew’s spot. So you fill that with Voynov. But then you fill the seventh spot with a kid who’s going to play only ever so often, seems a waste.

Which is why

they will keep Drewiske around. Need to have someone ride the pine.

Yes, it’s kind of ironic, but Drewiske has developed into the perfect insurance policy player. You can let him sit for long stretches without feeling bad about it, but he probably won’t do any harm if you have to swap him in for a game or two.

I can maybe see Muzzin sticking around in that role, but I think he’s still young enough so that you’d want to rotate him into the lineup so that he at least gets some playing time. He probably would be better off in Manchester if the best he can do with the big club is 7th D.

Also, Drewiske’s long, cheap contract makes him an even better candidate for sitting.

Probably have Martinez sit occasionally while they figure out what to do with Hickey.

Whiskey is a little like Scuds. If you don’t notice him, he’s doing his job. He’s boring, but that’s his game. Murrays system is boring anyways, which fits right into Whiskeys style of play.

Drewiske is just bad, bad, bad. The guy just doesn’t have it imo. Just doesn’t seem all that hungry to me.

off topic

but I put these up last night on LAKI and I figured “hey, Quisp hates these jerseys. I wonder what he thinks of these”

This isn’t new, is it? I seem to recall seeing this before. I gave them a thumbs down then, and I’ll do so again now.
