Our first Parise clipping of the year (probably not the last)
The Hockey News: Can New Jersey keep Parise?
New Jersey Devils left winger Zach Parise remains a frequent subject of trade speculation [...]. His comments to Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger will ensure his name remains in the rumor mill leading up to the [...] Feb. 27 trade deadline. Parise admitted money would be a significant factor when contract negotiations with the Devils begin, but claimed the most important thing was "being competitive and having a chance to win the Stanley Cup."
The Devils have made significant improvement over last season, where a horrific first half doomed their playoff hopes[...]. Despite the improvement, they're no longer the dominant, Stanley Cup contenders they were a decade ago. Since Parise joined the Devils in 2005-06, they've only advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs twice, the last time in 2007.
Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has yet to open contract talks with the Parise camp. That’s not surprising, as Lamoriello usually doesn’t get into negotiations with his free agents during the season. [...] Parise is currently earning $6 million on a one-year contract and could be in line for a raise up to $8 million per season. Chere suggested "a five-year, $45-million deal would be in line with other players of his quality."
Hanging over any potential of a contract extension are reports from earlier this season the Devils are close to bankruptcy, which would have serious implications upon Lamoriello’s negotiations with Parise. The scenario has led to speculation the Devils will trade Parise if he’s unsigned by the deadline, but as long as they remain in playoff contention they’ll hang onto him to make a push. In the past, Lamoriello has been unwilling to move pending UFAs, retaining Bobby Holik, Brian Rafalski, Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta, even though he eventually lost them to free agency.
$8MM? Well, I don't know about making him the highest paid King, but we could afford to do something like this (plus re-signing Mitchell or getting a Mitchell-esque D-Man via free agency), while keeping our cap hit around $62MM.

What would we give-up?
I would think first the Kings would need to sign him to an extension before agreeing to the trade. But if they could do that, I say they could part with:
- Hickey
- Martinez
- Zatkoff or Jones
- Toffoli
- Vey
- Kozun
- Cliche
I would think the Devils might go for a large package of close-to-ready high-end prospects. Who knows though? Do they go for that and leave Kovalchuk with a team like he had in Atlanta? He won’t like that. Making me believe someone is going to have to give up NHL players. If that’s the case, the Kings won’t do it. They don’t have wingers to give up as is. Would Lokti or Lewis do it?
wait and sign him as a UFA, give up no-one, create room simply by not re-signing Stoll and Penner
I kind of assume Gagne is done, but if not, we can still afford his cap hit as I added it up.
Quisp, I hereby inform you by the powers of the Internet Police that this is not allowed!
Tee hee.

He’s pretty much worth it. Not sure why you’re wishing that. Do you have secret plans to break his kneecaps or something?

well a quick over-simplified version
a cap hit of 8MM would make it the 5th highest in hockey. He missed last year due to major knee surgery and this year he is on pace to score 27 goals (if you combine his totals last year and this year his pace for a full season would be 25 goals). He is in fact scoring goals at the exact same rate as Alexander Semin who people are viewing as a huge disappointment going into free agency yet Semin is playing with much less talented linemates
(I am not making this as a point that we should be going after Semin because as pointed out in the other thread that is not such a great route either (ie Sutter+Semin=apocalypse just use Semin here as a point of comparison)
I didn't want Brad Richards last summer
Same with Parise… Something about coming off injuries and not looking quite the same player…
When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die.
I only see clearly what I remember.
