One period, one comment? Humm…
Whoo Hooo, this team is all over LA. Time to regroup.
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
I’m taking full credit for that goal; the instant I turned the game on, Kopitar scores.
You’re welcome.
Not saying DS was the best hire, but at least TM's gone.
Kings had momentum for almost 2 minutes.
Most astounding is a $7M defenseman shoot pucks into the feet of players at the blue line only see pucks rebound the other way…over and over and over.
I think we are looking at the real Kings team.

An Av appeared to bat it out to the slot with a glove…I am surprised no one said anything.

They changed an assist to Statsny-If he touched it, it was either with his glove or with a high stick – Either way, it would be illegal, a high stick or a hand pass. It happened again as the third period dwindled down-A Kings clearing attempt went off an Av’s defender’s hand at the point, and straight to another Av in the neutral zone. Don’t they call these anymore?
Well, they NEED to come out flying in the 3rd.
If they take it to OT or SO with the avs, thats it.
I’m sure a lot of people here have seen this, but here we go…
The Kings have been invisible except for Kopitar, Brown, Green and Quick,.

I have a strange urge to buy a Range Rover and put Kumho tires on it. Then drive to Bear Mountain and eat a Carls Jr turkey burger. Strange.
We keep losing these games we're supposed to win
And it’s pissing me off…

Fire Sutter
Can I get on the Fire Sutter bandwagon now?
Seriously, for all the talk I hear in here about the Kings having more fight in them than they did under Murray, that’s total bullshit. This is the exact same team, just as we all predicted it would be. They won a few games because as we all said, things had to average out at some point and they’d win a few 3-2 games where they’d been losing 2-1. They would have the exact same record whether it was Murray or Sutter at the helm.
There is no fire in this team. They still aren’t playing offense. They don’t seem to know what to do with the puck in the other team’s zone.
At this point I starting to wonder if I even care if they make the playoffs. Sure, if they get in it will be fun to watch until they get eliminated in 5 or 6 games by the Blues or the Canucks, but if they don’t, then Lombardi and Sutter will both get fired and the team will bring in a GM and coach who understand that you have to excel at both ends of the ice to win and that you should not be trying to win games 2-1 or 3-2 because that’s not trying to win, it’s trying not to lose. You should be trying to win 4-1 and 5-1.
This team is so damn frustrating.
well
I have not a wonderful feeling about DL at the moment. I did some research this morning checking out the stats of wingers on some of the ‘elite’ teams. Then comparing it to the wingers on the Kings. If Quisp fancies doing it in detail (which I don’t suppose we wants to do) then that’s fine. I’m not gonna bother posting it… but doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Let’s just say they have 38 goals between Seven wingers. Averages out to about 5 goals per player.
I’ll just state one only here. The Blackhawks have FORTY goals between two wingers. If you add in Stalberg and Kane that makes Sixty Five goals between four wingers.
Who the hell IS the architect of this team anyway? You can’t at a certain point just harp on about how these guys have done it in the past. Maybe so, but Clifford, Richardson, Hunter (please), and Lewis actually Have Not done it in the past.
The Kings don’t have a single legitimate first line winger. Justin Williams is the closest but he’s more of a second line player on most teams. I would say Simon Gagne is but he doesn’t appear to be playing hockey anymore this season.
No wonder they don’t score goals when the majority of the forward corps is composed of 3rd liners. Kopitar and Richards are the only forwards I would call first liners on pretty much any team in the league. They cannot do it by themselves. Lombardi wasted too many draft picks on defensemen, plain and simple.
Hickey, Forbort, Teubert, Deslauriers.
Sure, depth is good, but what do they say is the key to investing? DIVERSITY. Well, what is a draft but an investment in your team’s future? Draft a pair of wingers instead of any two of those guys instead of making fruitless bids for top flight free agents who were never going to LA anyway (Kovalchuk, B. Richards) and this team would be in better shape now with young guys playing on the top lines who can score. Instead we have older “veteran” wingers acquired via trade (Williams, Stoll, Penner) who aren’t scoring at all.
It’s good that for once the Kings have some depth to the farm system but Lombardi has been arrogant and stubborn in his defense-first, defense-only approach to team-building and hiring coaches.
And I might add…
When you draft forwards, at some point you have to use them. Oscar Moller never got a real shot in the NHL even though during his brief appearances he always looked really good. Andrei Loktionov barely got a look before this year despite the same circumstances. The list goes on and on. Bud Holloway. Tyler Toffoli. Brandon Kozun.
Maybe they wouldn’t all be lighting the NHL on fire, but wouldn’t it be better for them to be getting NHL experience now rather than picking up the NHL game in 2-3 years when the team is supposed to be contending every year? Instead, Toffoli is stuck in juniors playing against children and dominating them (a strategy that worked oh so well for Brayden Schenn) and Holloway and Moller are exiled to Europe.
It’s not like any of these guys could be putting up worse numbers than Stoll and Penner.
I’m really starting to hate Dean Lombardi.

Reasonable people can disagree whether Moller was given a legitimate shot but to say that “he always looked really good” is waaaaaaay too much of a stretch. As for Stoll, he’s having a crappy year along with many others…however I don’t remember anyone looking to dump him after he posted 20 goals last year unless it was in a package with JJ for another player.
Garrett
I (as you probably gathered looking at my post) totally agree with you. 100%.
The difference is, I just whinged about it. You brought up such a perfect point. EXACTLY. DIVERSITY. THAT is why the Kings will probably be hard pressed to win a Cup with DL at the helm. He IS stubborn. Lou Lamoriello (according to DL) once told him to follow his own voice – instincts, even if people don’t agree with him.
I Agree with that…. IF your instincts are correct. Look at the GM’s and scouting of Chicago. Same with San Jose, and Vancouver. They get the BALANCE right. Maybe they don’t win all the time, but the balance is indisputably there!! Oh, I forgot Boston. Superb superb job by Peter Chiarelli. He nabbed Lucic and Marchand both if I’m not mistaken in the third round. DL, You want some forwards who are hard to play against? Try that lot. Oh, and by the way, they can even score goals.
I am rather fed up with it personally. DL said he’d build a good defensive team, and he did. The three keys on this team are indisputably Doughty, Quick and Kopitar. Well Dave Taylor is responsible for two of em, and the other who isn’t playing to the cost of his contract, anyone on this blog pretty much could have drafted as there was only one player who went before him.
You wanna talk about the Yankees circa Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Robbie Cano? Fine!! Then draft some players who are worth talking about, because there is virtually no one on the current roster who is a game changer that he drafted that is causing any sort of sea change at all for this team. And the one who possibly could isn’t gonna play because JQ is in front of him on the depth chart.
Oh, and sorry…. I DO like Voynov and I’m sure he’ll be good. Perhaps Toffoli will be very good (not a given at this point though)….
So, back to Garrett’s post…. yeah…. balance.
They have good to very good d and goaltending, but it’s enough to help them be a .500 team. .500 teams rarely win championships.
One change, one semi-change:
Change is the 3rd line is exercising more puck possession and cycling. Too bad they can’t finish.
Semi-change is the first and second lines are allowed 3 men deep yet there is still an overall net absence.
Any bets on Penner retiring next year?
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
Yeah, it’s funny. Only this morning I was thinking about a post I read on the third line as to how they help the team defensively because they do well w the possession and all, but that helps the Defense! So, as you say, it does nothing at all to help the offense.
DL is maybe a happy guy though? He wanted a good defensive team though and he’s got one. Problem is, figuring out how to add the offensive pieces he needs is gonna be real difficult now, because they aren’t bad enough to keep drafting high. And the defensive backlog that he has he won’t be able to trade for anything decent as they haven’t proven much of anything.
See how he figures this one out.
I was like many a big supporter of DL, but with every passing month I’m becoming less and less. Even if Sutter gets the absolute most out of this bunch, they are still very limited in terms of what they can do offensively. Why? Because they have nowhere near the quality of the elite teams up front. I mean, not even near. Hell, even the more average teams like the Wild, Tampa Bay, Islanders, and dare I say it CBJ have a few really good forwards.
Seeking consistency
While there’s always talk about getting consistency from everyone (except for maybe Quick), how about consistency as a team?
Longest winning streak of the year: 4 games (back in OCTOBER)
Consecutive regulation wins this season:
3 (Oct 18 – 22)
2 (Nov 28 – Dec 1)
2 (Dec 26 – 28)
That’s right. Take away the OT/SO ‘crapshoot’, and the Kings have won consecutive games in regulation only three times this year! Not a way to gain confidence or momentum… I’d just like to see them string a few good games together, and I think that’d do some (minor?) miracles for this team.

We’ll see what DL does at the deadline. I doubt we’re going anywhere in the playoffs (assuming we make it). Hopefully he doesn’t trade away picks + prospects for some old ass rental. We’re not there yet imo. The dearth of picks we had last year and will have this year will hurt us in the future I think.
We are playing better under Sutter, but a lot of last night looked like TM era play. It’s still clear that we need a talented winger with a wicked shot.
I do expect to see Stoll gone (dear god please) and wouldn’t be upset if Penner, Greene, JJ and someone else left either. I think he could clear out a lot of our defensive depth backlog real quick and replace it with some quality forwards.
I hope he also starts taking some more conventional picks in the first round instead of some steal picks or pet players (and by god some forwards plz). While you can certainly draft a bust in the 1st round, there’s more consistency and talent in the round and I think that justifies picking more consensus-like picks instead of specific players who may normally have been drafted later or have more “upside”, whatever that is.
Am I the only one who can tell?
When TM was here, the Kings attack was slow, and their offense was worst in the league.
Sutter has been trying to speed the game up since he got here. The games against Vancouver, and Chicago were a sample of what could be accomplished with a faster attack. All the other opponents have purposely slowed the game down, and aside from a few bright spots, the offense has reverted back to the TM days.
Instead of the Kings purposely slowing the game down, now opponents know that if you slow the game down, they’ll only score 2 or less. It isn’t a good sign when Sutter says the Kings are tired. All teams are. Not all teams are averaging 2 goals or less a game.
Colorado didn’t slow down the game…they schooled the slow ass Kings.
