Morning,
Here hoping this morning’s thread doesn’t turn into a rope. Let go new guys…first points!
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
Hey everyone
I think everyone agrees that it’s way too early for hockey. But anyway, Go Kings Go!
Pride = Passion = Power

Martinez
It really seems to me like he’s been shooting into shinguards a lot more since he came into the lineup more regularly
I'm a dominant number four hitter for the El Cid Lounge's men's softball team
And he’s managed to perfect the Doughty “Telegraphing Slap Shot”.
At least the team is consistent.
Took Tampa lightly in the 1st, result: 0-1, burned repeatedly on defense, 2 on1s over and over
Took Florida lightly in the 1st, result: 0-1, burned repeatedly on defense, 2 on 1s over and over.
Took Islanders lightly in the 1st, result: 0-1, burned repeatedly on defense, 2 on 1s over and over
Hard to believe that anyone believes this is a playoff bound team.
The Kings organization has it wrong…this is not the team we’ve been waiting for. Pull that ad.

Save 11 dollars per ticket for the final 11 home games
So this deal gets worse as the season wears on. Save 9 dollars per ticket on the final 9 home game, 5 Dollars per ticket for the final 5 home games, etc…

I like what I’m seeing from Jordan Nolan so far. He is really trying to establish control of the Islanders’ crease.

nice pressure by the AHL line, Nolan should have shot but great effort anyways.
Richards seems to be playing better too, more involved. I think Stoll was sucking his soul out of him.
it’s good to see the adrenaline of being called up come into play with positive impact…
ricker kind of has a bigger obligation than usual to steer these kids right during the game…it’s been probably our most effective line so far today…

I like what I am seeing from Nolan…certainly his play is equal to anything Penner has shown.
Been pretty good in the O zone and on D that 1st period play were he was caught up in a hit behind the Islander net and raced back to knock the puck from an open Islander in the slot was excellent.

i like when refs let the guys play, but some of these non calls both ways have been on some dangerous plays. williams getting hit from behind into the boards when he doesnt even have the puck?
agree
and it’s obvious as the no calls keep coming, both sides are upping the ante on their play

Can the Kings leave Hunter behind on the Island?

If Nolan keeps up his good play I hope he sticks. Adds some toughness to the team and can take some of the fighting load off Cliffy and Westy (keeping him out of more games).
No
We’ve stunk since training camp.
Just how bad is it…I started doing breakfast dishes between 3rd and OT…OT started and kept doing the dishes. Count this as one of the worst LA Kings teams on a number of levels.
Imagine, keeping Stoll, releasing Zus. Idiotic. Plus, having Hunter on the club about says it all. The Western Conference is laughing at Dean Lombardi, master of wrecking a good thing.

Since the Penner trade
That’s the key point imo where things started to unravel. You’ve given up two first round picks and a third for …… essentially nothing. Present.
Prior to that there was definitely a really tight knit group who complemented each other well and while there were problems scoring, they had a nice core group. Now it would take someone with laser vision to sort their way thru the mess to see what in there works and what there is that needs to be dispensed with.
I responded to your post, given that only yesterday I was thinking that they seemed to be far more on the right track before last years trade deadline.
they had nothing on LW at the time, that’s bull. Of all the scapegoats they miss Frolov the most.

LW sure has been drama central for the Kings
Cammalleri
Frolov
Moulson
Purcell
Smyth
Penner
Holloway
I’m talking about when it felt ‘to me’ like the core was starting gradually to be affected. Yeah I see your point. I’m not talking about PENNER, being the reason. I’m talking about a movement of sorts that started. Settle down Niesy.
For me it was just a symbolic time period more than saying ‘the trade itself’.
And actually, if you say Frolov, then it actually started to happen even before the Penner trade.
She’s not the one saying the season is over, maybe you should settle down
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
I still maintain my prediction that the Kings will advance to at last the second round of the playoffs this year.
I'm sorry
Nut, I can only assume that those comments are directed to someone else? Certainly not to me. But if it was, I’d love for you to find exactly where it is that I said that the season is over.
Because if you read my comments, that is very very clearly not even in the universe of what I said.
If it was directed to someone else then pardon me for the error.
I have a hard time seeing last year as a time of unity …they had two ginormous losing streaks in Nov. And Jan.
They were also a weaker possession team than they are now. Shooting luck and now self doubt are making their situation appear worse than it is.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Niesy…. that’s perfect what you said. I agree totally with every word. My only point was that even though they were terribly uneven, there was something I liked about the basic core group. Problem is, and I don’t know why….. not you, but some people start putting words in my mouth. The whole issue with the Penner trade was that it marked a moment in time from which, somehow things seemed to start to deteriorate in a certain sense, In Spite of the fact that they’re a better possession team.
As to your second point…. yes they were a weaker possession team, but what they gained there they’ve lost in some other areas.
As for the shooting there are two things that I see. 1) Absolutely agree that it’s become a psychological issue with them. Very true. There is loads of self doubt that has crept in. 2) Same old story wrt a lack of drafting and developing ‘a certain type of forward’. DL likes basically one type of forward. For anyone prepared to storm in and point out the exceptions, please note that I said basically. I’m not criticizing that but given that not many players on the team have a natural feel around the net, I think that doesn’t help matters. So it’s a combination of those two elements together as I see it. And it’s created a very difficult situation.
I was a huge Zues fan, but it seemed apparent to me and everyone else that we were going to let him go and keep Stoll – and that we SHOULD do so. No one complained when it happened and I don’ tthink we should use 20/20 hindsight to pin Stoll’s terrible play on Lombardi.
Same thing with Penner – everyone wanted a big move at the deadline for a LW and Penner was the best of the bunch. Were there doubts? Sure – but no one foresaw this either.
And while I’m at it, the reason Moreau and Hunter were brought in was because of the perception that the team was too immature psychologically: that’s why they couldn’t get past the first round, went in big slumps, didn’t handle big expectations well, etc. Everytime Lombardi has made a move, there was a logical reason behind it that as far as I remember most people on these boards agreed with.
Never liked Stoll, even last year when he was earning points for us on the shootout and all that. He’s just not a very good NHL player when he has the puck, imo. Wasn’t good last year with it, isn’t good this year with it. His value seemed high last year and it would have been a good chance to move him while he still had a year on his contract.
I liked the Penner trade and I don’t think you can blame DL for his massive underperformance (although some of it is related to coaching, system, etc which DL is responsible for).
Moreau and Hunter were pretty weak moves and that’s how I felt before the season started. They are both players that TM has wet dreams about.
I liked the idea of the Penner trade anon this blog had called for it a number of times, but when he arrived it was the first time I realized that a fat man can play pro hockey.
It was clear that he was wildly out of shape, He had to be ignoring his condition for a long time…something Lombardi and his scouts should have seen BEFORE the trade.
When he started this season it was clear that he simply did not want to put in the work required to be in game shape. Nothing to do with LA since this started a lot earlier. And frankly I don’t think the “Pancakes” thing is a bit funny…it pisses me off.
Once here Penner had LA over a barrel. First, someone had to play wing then Kopitar and Williams went on IR. My opinion, sit Penner for the rest of the year lets what kind of payday he gets from the next sucker. Maybe he’ll quit hockey.
But the bottom line is that Edmonton took Lombardi for a ride not once but three times on two trades. And this after the Kovalchuk “my wife just wanted to see LA” fiasco.
I think we may be seeing Lombardi’s limits.
Franky, I’m pissed. It’s not that LA is losing games, they’re playing and losing in a style that showcase hockey at its worse…its not even interesting.
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
The point I've made is
Lombardi has made some very good moves and…. he also came here with the idea of putting a certain structure in place and to his credit he’s done that.
On the down side, he’s made unfortunately a number of mistakes. We all make mistakes. Call Ken Holland and Ray Shero and they’ll tell you that they’ve made mistakes. But the issue is that Dean has made several rather key mistakes that have set them back.
As I see it (only my opinion folks), if you’re gonna build the type of team that he wants …… there is less room for error in a sense. Hickey, Lewis and Teubert (Penner) adds up to four first round draft picks. If all you have to show for all of that is 5 goals for Penner this year and two for Lewis, that’s just not the way you’re ever gonna compete with the Detroit’s of the world. If you want to build a defensive team and use a majority of your picks that way, then the picks you use otherwise had better deliver a minimum of offense. And they haven’t gotten that.
This org is my scapegoat
The penner fitness thing…look, in the shape he was already IN, he had a track record of scoring. I don’t buy the fitness is making him suck thing one bit. He’s in better shape now and scores less.
What pisses me off is that they almost immediately wanted to change him. They suck at scoring and they want to change a 25 goal scorer’s game. WHY? Why put him on a shutdown line? Don’t get players you think you have to change. 15 year old girls get better advice from Cosmo.
I won’t be surprised if he returns to normal scoring levels on a different team. Not one bit.
Their d first d always don’t ever take risks let’s suck the life out of proven scorers strategy is what needs to loosen up.

yes
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes…….. that’s it.
you know, when everyone was banging on about firing tm, my friend ‘variable’ said to me, better be careful what they ask for, because whoever the coach ends up being, it’ll be someone in the mold of what dl wants, which will be a ‘d’ first coach.
you are so right and thats exactly why i said in one of my posts here somewhere that dean is too damned stubborn. i wonder if anyone ever gives him feedback in terms of making adjustments (Minor…. don’t worry dean, minor adjustments) to his philosophy which might shift things around just a bit, rather than doing the same over and over…… in terms of x’s and o’s (more or less, i know it’s changed marginally since ds came in), in terms of development of forwards, etc.
so……. YES
Not sure I wanna blame DL for hiring DS yet, since he seems to want to have his players attack rather than be so gotdamn passive. He’s a definite improvement over TM, imo. I think he needs a training camp and one more year to see what he really wants to make this team into.
DS seems like a stronger personality than TM (and possibly DL himself), and I think he will be able to give himself some more elbow room to do what he wants with this team. He doesn’t seem overly rigid, and since he has scored 40 goals in his career, it’s not like he doesn’t realize how important offense is.
We’ll see.
I feel flickers of optimism in regards to DS (simply removing TM the team made a lot of changes, for all they adamantly insisted that TM was blameless and it was all the players’ fault).
They’ve improved their pressure which is a mark in his favor. But I still want them to be willing to take more risks. If a good offensive play gets you a bit of praise but a defensive mistake gets you benched, I’m not sure this team is going to learn to take the next step.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
oh - and you used the words
‘needs to loosen up.’
thats all I’m saying….. not like change night and day, but just make modifications. oh, and i agree wholeheartedly that wherever Penner goes next, he’ll score. Everyone does. Poni even has 9 goals already so he’s on track to score at least 13 is my guess. Not Fantastic, but far better than the 5 of last season.
What I can’t believe is; How Is it Possible That Dean Doesn’t See This? How? Every single guy. Listening to the Rangers the other night and while Boyle didn’t score he made a huge play at the end of the game in a one goal game for the Rangers. And he’s the weakest on the ladder offensively of the ex kings.
If I’m honest, of course I didn’t foresee it being this grave. But then, once Kopi went down and Penner looked awful I really had doubts about what might happen.
At the time of the trade, while I didn’t say ‘no…. bad trade’, I did feel very uncomfortable as 1) there was clearly a lot of unhappiness with him amongst the fan base in Edmonton as well as with the press and 2) I started watching some youtube videos of him right away and thought….‘jeez he seems slow and lumbering… that’s exactly what the Kings don’t need’. And no I’m not making this up as I go along.
Did I realize that they were in serious trouble on the left side? Yes, but I think everyone did.
Good game guys

We are 11 days from the 13th anniversary of the Mark Fitzpatrick, Wayne McBean for Kelly Hrudey trade!
Good sign?
This has been on of Richards’ best games from a Shot differential, Corsi, Fenwick perspective and it came with King and Nolan as his linemates.
He was much better today. You could see it, besides the shifts where Nolan and King played a big part in taking the game over.
A rookie, in his very first NHL game, was our best skater, in my opinion
Which pretty much says it all about the Kings… Sure, the hands could use some work, but the puck seemed to find him in scoring positions, which is more than I can say for certain members of this team…
Our first line was um, well… I don’t have the words to describe how they played today… Think negative superlatives…

where would we be with 2 nhl caliber left wingers?
response
A friend used to say ‘if ’if’ was a skiff, we’d go sailing’.
Where would we be? There was a reason that Steve Yzerman wouldn’t offer more than a one yr contract to Gagne. DL had to realize that there was a substantial risk based on his history.
As for the first line, well, I think Anze’s definitely a first line center. But he could do with a bit more support and has never really had a true all star caliber player to play with on his line ever since he’s been with the kings.

Gagne was a high risk high reward signing, two years doesn’t matter since there’s IR.
But they needed backup plans. They have run through a disturbing number of left wings. Given that there are fewer high scoring ones around than right wingers, and they’ve had to shift DB over to even have a top line LW — and no LW sniper prospect in the system even 2-3 years away — it’s a major organizational failure at this point, I’d say.
