Dwight King has...
—1 less goal than Trent Hunter.
—2 less points than Trevor Lewis
—2 less points than Alec Martinez
—The same amount of goals, and one less point, than Westy
—and on and on and so on and so on… blah blah offense blah blah
Plus, King’s goal killed Nick Nickson.
RECALL MANCHESTER!
I’ve been too busy to spend my game time at the computer lately, but because I’m free today, I wanted to chime in and say that I’m glad King came in and scored right away. Sutter/DL are sending the message that help can be brought in, and I hope that motivates everyone to step up their games before the trade deadline.

When was the last time we had two rookies score their first NHL goals in the same game?

last year we had a bunch of 20 goal scorers, which was quite impressive considering our lack of offensive ability.
Im still waiting for us to have one this year
As for the other thing
Just checked it out on NHL.com…
The only other team to get goals by every skater so far: Minnesota.
The only other teams to come close: Detroit and the Blue Jackets.
From what I could see, the kids looked great.
Anyone know the last time the Kings had fewer than 15 shots on goal in a game? It seems like it was recent, but as long as the pucks are going in, I don’t care…

They did. It was a good road game by a tired team. For a change, very entertaining.
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
I remember seeing Nolan at training camp a couple of seasons ago. He is a large human being. Granted, he was standing between Kozun and Azevedo at the time, but still. And at his age, he’s still filling out, too.
If he has NHL-level hands and shot, he’ll be hard to stop.

I remember in development camp they threw him in with Toffoli and Vey. He fit in poorly with them, but I’m glad that he’s been working hard to round out his entire game instead of just focusing on being physical.

I'm liking this Jordan Nolan kid already
Nice steal Dean…

Hey guys,
how did the game go? It’s great that Nolan and King both scored but I see only 16 shots for the entire team and go whoa.
Hopefully it was because they were so fatigued…

We lost a lot of board battles, but took advantage of our few chances, kind of the inverse of the Panther game. I think Nolan and King (as opposed to someone like Kozun) are up because we have been pretty weak in winning puck battles, which is something we excelled at last season with Simmonds and Handzus. I like Penner but he loses way too many one on one battles for a guy his size. Oh, and Loki scored again! Apparently all he had to do was put himself in the way of shots.

I saw that he scored and I was jazzed! Thanks for the info.
I’ve argued Penner was a mismatch for MR’s defensive line from the get go. Why must we be a meat grinder for guys who score on other teams? Short shifts and hanging around the net rather than Frolovian puck retrieval skills is what he has. Though they were bitches about Frolov too.
Sigh. I’m trying not to get depressed. Yay kids.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
I guess what I mean to say is this —
Giving grinders for MR is a good idea if you want that to be the defensive line — but then you need better finishers on Lokti’s line to compensate. REQUIRE. Too many low shooting % guys on the wings right now.
I know people are resistant to the idea of MR as a “third line guy” but if you roll three lines like Philly did with Briere (soft minutes), Carter-Giroux’s line, and then Richards, that is a strong setup.
We don’t have to have a Handzus setup, though they could go back to one. SJ was more dominant territorially when they rolled Thornton, Couture, and Pavelski as their three centers. …now I’m giddy about having a working internet so I’m going off on a tangent
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Giving grinders for MR is a good idea if you want that to be the defensive line
It’s a bad idea to make MR the “stopper line” because it’s going to look pretty bad when Richards is being out produced by both Simmonds and Schenn while paying him 5.75mm. Also the Richards line hasnt even really been good at “stopping”. I don’t understand why they even need a “stopper” line when they spend all this money on defensemen and are benefitting from excellent goaltending. I would imaginge that one of the luxuries of having a defense heavy philosphy is that you can run pretty balanced lines.
This my main frustration with the team right now I think. Running Richards out there pretty much solely against the other teams top line night in and night out.
It is interesting though the way the team has handled guys going into UFA (Penner, Frolov, Poni, Handzus, Stoll) by giving them tougher assignments which thereby keeps their production down so you can theoritcally get more bang from your buck from cheaper guys and takes the sting out of letting the UFA walk….I wonder if that is coincidence or not.
MR had always produced despite tough minutes. His wingers have usually been a bad fit but the Kings’ hyper conservative nature has, I think, led to less balance in his game. Scuderi said he was like an extra defenseman.
He’s not going to outscore two young players on an o-minded team, though. Who cares what it “looks like”? Philly lost two good tough minutes forwards along with Pronger and are drowning in goals against. As long as he’s a useful player here I don’t care about Flyers homers flipping out.
I’m all for giving kopi the stopper role if he’s the best fit. But in any plan they desperately need scoring wingers.

Penner would fit best on the Loki or Kopi’s left, but I don’t blame Sutter/Murray for trying to give Richards someone to play with. I agree that it hasn’t been the ideal situation for Penner, but he hasn’t shown a whole lot to give him the benefit of the doubt. While Poni, Fro, and Penner have all suffered at LW, Smyth (ugh), Fro, and Brown have all succeeded there (although Smyth was basically playing on the equivalent of the Loki line).
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
It’s a small sample size of 34 games, however I would include Gagne among those who succeeded at LW the last couple of seasons too.

We all know there are some LWs that suit their style more than others, but there aren’t many top 6 LWs to begin with, so they are always limiting their options in an already tight market. And even when they have Kings style players, they simulatneously yearn for them to have skilled sniper production.
The Red Wings get more from players, we get less. If the Kings get Kostitsyn or Semin, it will be the Hindenberg all over again.

Oh gosh
I just peeked around the web at a few boards — I’m a bit worried that the expectations for Nolan and King may be too high. I hoped for them to bring energy and some undented optimism, which they did and I want to hug them for that. But Nolan scored 5 goals and King 24 at the AHL level. Let’s not pressure them to be immediate replacements for 20-30 goal scorers in the top 6…!
Dean must have some other plan, right? Or is the idea that it’s pointless to trade for established scorers because they just grind them to dust?
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
I really doubt Dean’s plan to increase scoring ends with “Call up Dwight King & Jordan Nolan.”

Yeah, it’s probably back to “Acquire New Guy, Then Berate.”
Berating is easier than taking responsibility for figuring out why the hell it keeps happening.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
On the contrary! It’s quite sunny here. Kings fans are the ones that worry me.
I just passed an ice sculpture that is chipper about apples. It’s titled, “Cider Pressing Is Michigan’s Blessing.”
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Haha, this is seriously some people’s plan
Step one: waive a 20-30 goal scorer
Step two: replace with a 5 goal scorer from the AHL
Offense: repaired!
Remember how the team was going to be better once Frolov and his “lack of caring” was gone? Once Poni left? Sooooo much better. How many passes is this org going to get? Our left wing situation is a freaking disaster. Invent a time machine and go back to keep at least one of Cammalleri, Moulson, or Fro, and it gets downgraded to “serious concern.”
I’ve found my voice, and it’s a rant! Whee.

I would take Squid, overpriced as he is.
I look at Dustin Brown shifted over to the left side as our only top line left wing option and I think “It’s amazing that they’ve failed to replace him.”
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
Penner/Gagne. It wasn’t a bad idea, just hasn’t worked out.
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
Also, Cammalleri was a selfish asshole, I wouldn’t want him back for free.
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
What’s the point of loading Penner with tough comp like Poni and Frolov before him and not thinking about his particular skill set?
If you didn’t think they could use him the way he scored the majority of his goals, then why expend assets to acquire him?
I don’t think this falls under the realm of unexplanable mysteries.
Also, we may have a team free of selfish assholes, but it is also 30th in scoring.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
If Dean didn’t trade him, he would still not be here, just without Penner.
For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.
Well I guess the original source of the conflict was over his salary arbitration.
People said later he was always going to bolt, but I do not know.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
I remember an interview with him on HNIC a few years ago after a Kings game on CBC. It was the last year of his contract and thee were many questions about whether he would seek to join a Canadian team when his commitment to Los Angeles ended. He was unwilling to commit to bolting from the Kings but his demeanor made it pretty obvious that he was going to split at the first opportunity.
Also, don’t forget how useless he was in LA for the most part. Remember 2007-08 when he started the season with 10 goals in 10 games, but finished the season with 19? I’m still glad every day that Lombardi traded him. It would have just been nice if he had actually gotten something in the exchange…
No matter what happened, though I believe a severe personality conflict was there—they still have an empty spot for his type of skill, years after the fact.
We are strong in some areas but there we are full of fail.

I agree here. The problem is deeper than just adding a couple of rookies. Expectations are a little blown out of proportion. It’s like before we called Lokti up, poeple thought he was the answer to all our problems offensively, and at least he adds skill (which he does) then turned on him because he hasn’t scored like they thought he should.
Hopefully Nolan, and King work out, but their not the answer, and eventually if the answer isn’t fixed, fans will turn on them too.
I know. They’re already plotting to trade Lokti.
I wanted Lokti up so he could develop at the NHL level, and also because Stoll as our third line center wasn’t accomplishing squat. So he’s fine in my book. He should have a few more goals, but he’s set up some brilliant scoring chances that haven’t been finished.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
He’s been great at possession also. His line has been beasts at keeping the puck deep in the offensive zone. Because they haven’t scored, many believe he’s a total bust, and trade bait..
He’s a playmaker. If they chuck his talent out now…I will start burning things.
Dinglebarnin' It JftC
I’m not expecting King and Nolan to be saviors, but the fact that 3 of the 4 goals yesterday were scored by guys in their rookie or 2nd years, I take as a good sign. Nolan and King have generated chances flanking Richards (esp. Nolan) and they have brought some energy. That should translate into goals.
The fact that the Kings got 3 goals on 16 shots may be a sign that the shot % underperformance is starting to equalize. We can hope.
Went to the Pen-cakes breakfast this morning, and will post a pic of Penner serving me pancakes later. He was polite and amiable, especially considering that the Kings are just off of a long roadie and didn’t get in until late last night.

Penner Seems Like Such a Nice Guy
Shame he hasn’t been able to put it together for the Kings well enough to be asked to stick around.
Lisa Dillman just posted to the LAT website, with a pic. She confirms that he got very little sleep last night, so his good nature this morning was all the more impressive.
The way this season his gone for him, I feel worse for him than for anyone else. Gotta like a guy who can joke about himself like that.
"I see my life flashing before my eyes... and it's boring!." — Gumball Watterson
It doesn’t look good because in order to get the most out of Richards they are going to need a big slow Handzus type to take the tough assignments off Richards’ hands. It doesn’t seem like Richards and Lokti can coexist on this team (unless you put them on the same line after you get your big slow defensive guy).
they are going to need a bigslowHandzus type to take the tough assignments off Richards’ hands
Man, if only they had one of those on the roster…
I Think the Plan is Hope Gagne Gets Healthy
and wait for the summer to add, maybe.
Don’t forget Parse. He was part of the scoring plan, too.
Parse’s luck makes you wonder if he’s being punished for doing something horrible in a past life. :( By all rights, he should have been an important part of the Kings’ plans the last two seasons.
"I see my life flashing before my eyes... and it's boring!." — Gumball Watterson
The problem with Parse is that he’s lost practically two whole seasons at a time when he should have been developing as a player. As a result, it’s hard to justify viewing him with the same upside potential that he had two years ago.
"I see my life flashing before my eyes... and it's boring!." — Gumball Watterson
But it’s not like he’ll be far from the league-minimum salary (can he be signed to a 2-way?). If we have a contract to give, and we have an idea of where he is physically and we can get a look at him skating over the summer, I don’t think there’s much to lose with him. I am not a CBA or contract expert obviously, but I don’t think there’s anything I’m missing.
Well he does kinda look like a pederast.

In their two games…
They have probably had more and better chances than any other forwards on the team! And they have both actually cashed in, which is shocking in and of itself for members of this team =)
I love what they bring in the cycling game. That has been largely absent from the Kings this season and I think it’s one of the biggest parts of the team’s overall failure offensively. It really makes me miss Frolov and Simmonds…

I could see that trade happening maybe if Dean really wants some more picks back after all his little trade escapades.
And that Richards line would be a hell of a pain to play against. I’d save the money on Grabovski though and use it for Quicker/Voynov (Voinov?)

Cliche was out the last few with an injury, and they lost Nolan and King. That’s probably the reason.
He sounds like he’s too reckless with the puck though, probably a defensive liability at times so he’s the obvious tweak.
Sounds like we can trade JMFJ – we’ve got a clone in the pipeline!
