Post-Game Bullets: Dickhead Scorer Edition
- Kings lost 1-0 again.
- Dean Lombardi likes guys with character.
- So do I. But not because I just like good people of high moral fiber.
- When I say "character" I am referring to leadership, and specifically the mythical trait of having the force of personality to inspire a team to follow him into battle. To, in effect, will a victory.
- It doesn't just mean trying really hard. It means results.
- Like a lot of people, after exasperating losses like tonight's, I engage in trade fantasies. I don't endorse them. They're irrational.
- Send Dustin Brown, Dustin Penner, Jarret Stoll, Jonathan Bernier, Thomas Hickey and a 1st to Columbus for Jeff Carter and Rick Nash.
- AND send Jack Johnson to the Wild for Dany Heatley.
I think that would solve the scoring problem.

Nah
They’d come here and just play our system too, no change.

Reactionary/Desperation
I can now get behind a trade for Jeff Carter if we can get him for pennies on the dollar and he and Mike Richards agree to live at least 30 miles apart… Of course this might be leading to some drunk driving charges, so that would be no good either
I don’t know how, but those guys would have to learn to co-exist personally without self-destructing.

Not just no
FUCK NO!
That contract is an abomination. I think the last few years of it he is getting paid over 20 million or something, thats not the cap hit of course, but still … you gotta think that would affect other business decisions.
Ok, my rage has passed
Season’s not over… There are plenty of games left… to score a goal…
But just in case it is over, can we not mortgage the future to be first round roadkill? KTHANX…

This is what I worry about now too. Dont make bad deals just to save face on the ’11-12 season. Make a smaller deal, get the current guys scoring … sneak into the playoffs and try and do some damage. I still think we could see the 3rd round (with some luck and even a SLIGHT increase in scoring.)
a SLIGHT increase in scoring.)
A slight increase in scoring implies one to two goals a game. If you play Detroit or Vancouver you’d best be able to score more than an average of two goals a game if you expect to get by them. It might work vs. Phoenix or Calgary but not the elite teams. They’re gonna get some goals unless Quick plays some of the greatest goal since JS Giguerre when he led the Ducks to the Finals and lost to NJ. Could happen. But it’s a bit silly imo to count on that.
Disagree
I think the Kings can play monster defense. I think they have one of the best goaltenders in the West. If they could average 2.5 goals per game they would give any team a hard run. Vancouver would be a tough match and so would Detroit but its not out of the realm of possibilities. At 2.5 goals/game they’re better than San Jose, the Blues, the Predators, and the Flames, for sure.
I just hold out zero hope that the scoring will get better this year.

I have no trust at this point in Dean Lombardi to make a relevant deadline trade. Fred Modin was not bad. Virtually all the rest have been futile…. and that’s when his situation related to his position was vastly different.
Agree with Paul Udani. What’s the point of making a deal just to make the playoffs at this point. They are playing well defensively and are beyond challenged offensively.
Hey Quisp, your prediction relative to GF this season is being seriously challenged. Who wouda thought that it could be worse than what you factored at the 16 game mark I believe it was.
Getting Justin Williams for Patrick O'Sullivan was brilliant.

It was
And so was the JJ trade. Very good. But it really depends what you want (not you…. but what one wants). As I see it he’s counterbalanced that by some really poor decision making and I’ve stated some of those things often enough here that I won’t bother going into it.
I think better than trading for just one big name, the goal should be to trade for some forward depth (2 or 3 younger non big name guys). I.e. voracek, jvr, kulemin. Putting all our faith in one guy (ala Nash) could be potentially disastrous. I’m fully prepared for this to inevitably happen though so hopefully it’s for the best.
Also just read this per jaspers rink: Quick has given up 10 goals in his last 7 and is 2-4-1.
Ugh.

Poor Deno, life is so unfair. He grabs Hicky and it’s two surgerys. Grabs Penner and the man forgot his mojo. Tried Loktionov and he blows a shoulder. Richards, Gagne, Doughty, concussions all. Burned twice by Edmonton, unable lure Brad Richards and unable to even retain superstar and savior Marco Strum.
Lombardi next hires Sutter; going against the wisdom of most every hockey writer, fan and commentator.
The former is bad luck. I believe the latter is a temporary patch. Now it’s wait till next year and hope Lombardi’s luck changes.
It’s simply not realistic to expect .666 stretch run hockey from a slumping and poorly coached .400 club.

I still love Dean. He’s in a very shitty spot right now though.

Rick….. I like ‘aspects’ of Dean for sure. Where I disagree is that he has a very very specific approach to what he believes will win hockey games and a championship. I’ll state here that I’d like to be proved wrong, but I have two huge issues wrt Dean.
1) His drafting and development from the back out was way out of balance. Way out of balance. People are welcome to disagree with that, but that’s how I see it. It’s one thing to put a focus on a defensive structure and entirely another to focus so exclusively on defense that you ignore the issue of offense.
2) I add to the above that this huge focus on defense and his selection of both players and coaches is suited to serve his vision that Defense wins championships. This isn’t my comment, it’s something I read on another blog: the comment was ‘defense doesn’t win championships, balance wins championships’.
If defense won championships the Baltimore Ravens would have won more than the one superbowl that they won twelve years ago against a subpar Giants teaam.
Luck
No such thing …
If I ever told the persons I answer to, "sorry we failed; we really had some bad luck". My career would be over.
All the challenges you noted are just opportunities to adjust and move forward. That’s his job, that’s why he is compensated for, extremely well, I would point out.
there is no luck

I may be in the minority here
but I love this idea. This team looks dead right now, and minor tweaks aren’t going to do it. In my opinion, a major overhaul isn’t a bad idea at all. And this would definitely qualify. Pick up 3 proven scorers? Yes please. And giving up what we do in this scenario dumps a lot of money

In my opinion, a major overhaul isn’t a bad idea at all.
In principle I don’t disagree….. the problem is I do disagree as to who the person is that should do that. If Lombardi is the Kings GM then I’d say it’s far better to do nothing or risk making a far bigger mess than what they already have.
If AEG could find a savvy person to make changes (A – not sure there are even any good candidates out there and B – I don’t know if AEG could recognize them even if there were) then that would imo be the best way to go about it. DL has a philosophy that he wants to stick to at all costs. That much to me seems evident….. so moves that go outside of his philosophy are likely to be rather incoherent – unless he gets exceptionally lucky. He did with Justin Williams, but a far bolder move on an entirely different scale is whats needed and I’m not convinced that he is the guy to do that. I say that based on what I’ve seen over the last five and a half years.
……. and in advance……. for those that disagree….. it’s just how it appears to me.
(A – not sure there are even any good candidates out there and B – I don’t know if AEG could recognize them even if there were)
Moves like Dan Bylsma (the type of decision… not the fact that he’s a coach), Ray Shero, Mike Gillis, Mike Babcock when hired by the Ducks…. all first timers I believe in their position. Tim Leiweke doesn’t seem to have the knowhow to make that sort of direction altering decision.
i disagree with a lot of the dislike of Lombardi
but that’s just my opinion. He’s picked up a good number of proven scorers in seemingly good deals for us, who simply didn’t produce with the Kings. Is that DL’s fault? Granted, he probably should be held accountable at some degree, but I liked the vast majority of the moves he made at the time. As did most of the hockey world.
Compare that to, say, the Dodgers, who’s fans get instantly furious every time their GM makes a move. Now THAT’S a bad GM….

Listen, I’m not trying to be either contentious or a wise guy or difficult. It’s the typed word so you clearly aren’t gonna get my tone of voice.
When he traded for Dustin Penner (I as we all do did some research on the beloved internet) I discovered that the press had had quite enough of Penner in Edmonton and that many fans on the chats were saying they were glad to be rid of him. Right there it isn’t a major endorsement. Second, I watched clips of him on Youtube. It ‘seemed’ (operative word is seemed so I don’t seem like some pompous whatever) that he was quite lumbering and didn’t have much speed.
One thing that I did know at that moment was that the Kings were already a lumbering slow team that lacked speed. It’s not as though I was Einstein. Everyone seemingly knew that. So I asked the question….. why would you get a player that has big question marks following him around, and lacks a quality that this team is in need of…. speed. Yes he supposedly could still score goals but didn’t turn out that way.
To me that isn’t just bad luck. Many other GM’s have made moves that have paid handsome dividends. (see Joe Nieuwendyk, who picked up Michael Ryder for a song and who has scored 22 goals so far for the Stars). Could end up with 28 or so.
Meanwhile DL grabbed Hunter and Moreau…. quintessential DL types of players. Both are now gone.
I’ll stop there.
If the Penner trade never happened then the DL drafting methodology isn’t so bad insofar as the system would still be rich with jewels, allowing a decent acquisition or two to take place with less sacrifice of proven talent in exchange.
Its is a shame in respect to Penner’s lack of commitment/production but this was foreseeable as he arrived in poor physical condition. For all appearances he seems at the end of his career (physically and mentally).
The coaching situation should also have been foreseeable. Granted Murray got a pass when Williams and Kopitar when down (and the Kings went to six games) but clearly the power play and offense were not dynamic enough for a contending team and were in the process of deteriorating.
Worse, the team seemed flat at camp, it didn’t improve in Europe or the East Coast swing that followed and the offense continued to disintegrate.
Well, that’s hindsight. When the hammer finally fell clearly there were no suitable coaches to sign. Giving the lack of options Sutter was the smart move…a “simple system” coach better suited to working with veteran players and a contract that could be sacrificed at season’s end.
I don’t feel the team needs revamping, just a add two top six and two bottom six wings, replace the head coach, the offensive coordinator and power play coach. Even consider bringing Hardy (cough, cough) back.
Sutter’s and the team’s problem is that the offense is not activating defensemen early in the game (like Nashville and other successful mid-talent teams are doing) and the offense only shows up for 10 minutes a game (typically 8 in the 2nd; 2 in the 3rd).
Are Teemu Selanne and Melanie Griffith Twins?
these trades might actually make the Kings exciting to watch finally. In the meantime I’m watching other games to see what a fucking goal looks like again.

Lot of lack of character guys in your scenario
Heatly, Carter, Nash? All guys that can score for sure, but certainly void of character and work ethic. Nash seems like a pretty good character guy, not convinced of his heart or work ethic. In fairness CBJ are the most poorly managed team in the league and they’ve sucked for years, so that’s part of Nash’s deal.
Heatly (not even considering his whole deal with Snyder) has been a locker room cancer everywhere he’s gone, Carter basically the same. Kings get Carter they better make sure they don’t bring their wives to any Kings parties. Both lousy locker room guys.
Obviously there is a big problem in LA, the complete lack of scoring is unbelieveable. I’m leaning towards changing the system more than change of personnel but something needs to be shaken up and soon. Watching the Kings this season has often been like watching paint dry..Bad stuff Maynard.
Well
the title is “Dickhead Scorer Edition”. To be fair, it worked for the Ducks in ‘07. I think. I wasn’t paying attention and got really drunk around the end of the playoffs.

The Red Wings haven’t lost on home ice since Nov. 3, nearly four months.
The Kings have a similar streak going. They haven’t scored on home ice in ages.
The sad thing is..... we were better last year
Trade Doughty, he’s overated and not worth much. We shoulda kept ZUUUUUSSSSS, he’s a great playmaker
Because he gets a crapload of PP time, better linemates, better matchups, better zone starts, a better system, etc.
He’s being used differently this year. There is something to be said for capitalizing on the opportunities you are given, though.
He has 9 PP goals this year. NINE. Jesus, that’s a lot.
Have we scored 9 PP goals all year?
Yep
Best. Guy. Ever.
